How to fix dripping leaking mixer tap

  • This is how to fix a leaking dripping mixer tap. This one little trick will allow you to open up the tap to replace the cartridge. The cartridge is also known as a ceramic disk or disc and is basically the washer inside you tap which also allows you to switch from hot to cold via a lever . The concept i show you in this video can be applied to the vast majority of mixer taps. Whether you call it a mixer tap or a faucet its the exact same thing. I had the same issue as a few others below where I couldn’t get the handle off. Don’t underestimate just how sticky this can get. In all the videos it just slides right off, but this step can actually be a lot of work. I had actually screwed the little screw right off with the Allen key and it had fallen into the inside of the tap and it still wouldn’t come off. I was bouncing back and forth between wondering if I’d really got the screw off and thinking that maybe my tap was different than the ones in the videos in some way. The comments below encouraged me to just use more force which did actually work. For anyone wondering, I used WD40 and a LOT of force. I thought I might even break it but was beyond caring! By moving the handle from side to side with considerable force it popped off after about a minute. I replaced the cartridge with one I picked up so Bunnings for 20 bucks and it’s working perfectly. Hope this helps anyone else struggling with that first step.

      I had to use a bit of force as well... but in my case the faucet body broke in half.
      Oh well, it's time to replace the whole thing 🤷‍♂️

      @@wushoo That's unfortunate but probably the only way forward. I'd reached the point where I was so angry at the time that I wouldn't have minded if it broke!

      @skywalker_sr Yeah, same here.
      To be honest, my tap was a cheap one. Replacing the cartridge would cost almost as much as the tap itself 😉

      Yes, true. I've been at this place (in Poland) I've been renting barely 7 months and during this time the whole cartridge needed replacing twice. In UK, all I had to do was change the rubber seal perhaps once every 5 or 6 years if that.

    2 tips as well - 1. put never-sieze or vaseline on the new tap threads thats saves them bonding/corroding when scum gets in there (and it will). 2. If you have high water pressure get a tap that says it can handle the said pressure, i have had a few fail quickly because of the high pressure OR install a PLV (pressure limiting Valve) which is the best bet - 350kpa is a good option. i did this for the kitchen tap, needed 2 valves (1cold, 1 hot) plus i put stop/shutoff valves under the sink so didn't have to turn off the mains to change the mixer.

      For £20 you could just replace it..but if you’re desperate to save a few quid, try a cloth and some grips, work it clockwise and anti-clockwise to try and free it or you can also use a strap wrench, very good for no damage removal….and more wd-40 or similar…good luck!

    Hey Bill - if you take requests, I'm having troubles with my sach windows (they have the springs not the counter weights). Also wondering about best way to service the toilet which is getting backed up a couple of times a week, but doesn't appear to be 100% blocked. I was thinking of trying drain cleaner.

    • @billshowto
      @billshowto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually don’t work on sash windows particularly older timber windows as many times the timber is rotted at the base and gives me too much work for a small job. They spirals can be adjusted from the base of the window by unscrewing the plate and twisting it as needed. Regarding the toilet most likely an issue with the sewer and may need to be cleared with a better . Sounds like possible tree roots👍
