Back in the late 70's and early 80's,when this video aired, all young British trombonists, including me, were heavily influenced by the great studio player Don Lusher who used slide vibrato extensively.I agree,it now sounds dated and inappropriate and,if I played it played now, would use a more controlled lip vibrato.Styles change..
I prefer the slide vibrato than any other kind of vibrato. I feel like that slide vibrato really brings out the difference of the instrument to the others that have valves. Especially on pieces like czardas which is a piece for the violin. I like to think of the slide as a string on the violin. So I can get more feel of the piece. With this said, the slide vibrato is more my style.
Completely agree re the influence of Don Lusher - I was lucky enough to have him guest with our jazz orchestra when I was in my teens. Talk about being in awe of him - he was so professional and controlled in his playing. But, perhaps being old and old-fashioned myself, I don't think of it of your slide vib as dated. Perhaps classic or retro would be better terms? And I agree with Crary below that it is part of the character of the trombone. A decade later, do you still think of it as 'inappropriate'? Wonderful tone btw, Martin. Thanks for sharing.
This is some of the best trombone playing I have ever heard! It's really amazing how fast he can tongue. I can double tongue but this is truly amazing! I hope to be this good one day though it will likely never happen...

I know this is a violin solo, but I havent found a trombone solo that I like of this song except for this one. The guys tone, and musical structure is the best of all the solos I've heard
Technically, its double tonguing. Explaining how its done is easy and doing it slow isnt too hard, but getting to a point where you can consistently do it that fast is hard to say the least
I've always loved V. Montis' Czardas, I listened to every instrumentalist version of this great piece But, I've never heard the title Czardas pronounced the way the narrator pronounced it at the beginning of the video! I learned how to pronounce it from a friend of my family and his wife! They said it was pronounced "Zardas"
Great job Martin! It's so nice to hear Czardas on a low brass instrument I've played low brass for over 20 years on a different instrument though, I play the baritone horn AKA a euphonium. I tried trombone in Jr. High school for a year but the director wanted me back on baritone because a made it sound more like music than the noise coming from the trombone I was playing.
Trombone player here, that is absolutely awesome. All around an incredible performance, but for me the outstanding and unique quality you have is your tone colour - so sweet and gorgeous ... and so good in the low register too, that is by far best I've heard, unlike most trombones that have that more harsh chainsaw sound, yours is super smooth and rich - I wonder how you do it! Hope you are still enjoying playing and entertaining audiences!
It's been like 6 years since I've first listened to this video, and it never ceases to amaze me how incredibly clean every single note is. I strive to be able to play with such clarity in my notes.

it really is a great piece. He's playing this one in C/C minor. Lindberg does it in D/D minor. pretty tough. I did it in B flat, which seems to lay on the slide really easily if you can get all of the triple tonguing down. if you are a college/professional level player, don't think this is impossible! go for it! for all of you that think you'll never be this good, stop it! if you want to play it, then make it happen.
