Is the disparity in response between high pass and low pass filtered images a result of evolutionary pressure for sight in low light conditions?

      Yes, that is quite plausible.
Specifically, some of our low frequency vision is derived from retinal cells that cover a larger area in the back of the eye, thus picking up more photons in dim light:

Convergence (syntropy) is dual to divergence (entropy) -- the 4th law of thermodynamics!
Synchronic lines are dual to enchronic lines.
Concepts are dual to percepts (measurement) -- the mind duality of Immanuel Kant.
Thesis (the left eye) is dual to anti-thesis (the right eye) synthesizes the mind's eye or reality.
"Always two there are" -- Yoda.

Yes, dialectics everywhere you look. And so much of math (groups, rings, fields - and thus numbers) is based on binary operations - no more, no less as Yoda said.
But is that because of how we structure and make sense of the world, or is the world fundamentally polarized? Maybe that is a property that always arises whenever there is no infinity? Any gradient needs a start and and an end point after all.

@@astonishinghypothesis Everything in physics is made out of energy.
Energy is duality, duality is energy -- the 5th law of thermodynamics!
It is easy to prove this:-
Action is dual to reaction -- Sir Isaac Newton or the duality of force.
Thesis (action, problem) is dual to anti-thesis (reaction) creates the converging thesis or synthesis (solution) -- the time independent Hegelian dialectic. Problem, reaction, solution.
Attraction is dual to repulsion, push is dual to pull, stretch is dual to squeeze -- forces are dual.
If forces are dual then energy must be dual:-
Energy = force * distance -- simple physics.
Potential energy is dual to kinetic energy -- gravitational energy is dual.
Electro is dual to magnetic -- Maxwell's equations, electro-magnetic energy is dual.
Positive is dual to negative -- electric charge or numbers.
North poles are dual to south poles -- magnetic fields.
      All energy is dual.
Energy is dual to mass -- Einstein.
Dark energy is dual to dark matter.
Negative curvature (enchronic points) is dual to positive curvature (synchronic points) -- Gauss, Riemann geometry.
      Curvature or gravitation is dual.
Gravitation is equivalent or dual (isomorphic) to acceleration -- Einstein's happiest thought, the principle of equivalence, duality.
Your brain is made out of energy (duality) so it will show up in neuro anatomy, it is hardwired into the physics.
Teleological physics (syntropy) is dual to non teleological physics (entropy).
Mind (the internal soul, syntropy) is dual to matter (the external soul, entropy) -- Descartes or Plato's divided line.
Internal is dual to external, inside is dual to outside.
Inclusion is dual to exclusion -- the Pauli exclusion principle is dual.
Polarization creates stress, tension or energy (duality) -- Einstein's theory of General relativity.
      Polarization is duality -- spinors.

@@astonishinghypothesis Subgroups are dual to subfields -- the Galois Correspondence.
      Homology is dual to co-homology.
Injective is dual to surjective synthesizes bijective or isomorphism (duality).

      @@astonishinghypothesis Colours are actually dual.
Colours are different aspects or frequencies of the same substance namely energy.
      Same is dual to different.
Black is the lack of a colour, lacking is dual to non lacking.
The colour black (lacking) is dual to the colour white (non lacking or all colours, a spectrum).
Photons or light rays are dual.
Null vectors (light rays) are dual to dual to null points -- Twistor theory, Roger Penrose.
Points are dual to lines -- the principle of duality in geometry.
Symmetric wave functions (Bosons, waves) are dual to anti-symmetric wave functions (Fermions, particles) -- quantum duality or the spin statistics theorem.
Bosons are dual to Fermions -- atomic duality.
Bosons like to be the same state (syntropic) and Fermions like to be in different states (entropic).
Energy is duality -- waves and particles.
The word entropy means "a tendency to diverge" or differentiate into new states, reductionism.
The word syntropy means "a tendency to converge" or integrate into a single state, holism.
      Reductionism is dual to holism.
Your brain is integrating information to form predictions which are used to track targets, goals & objectives and this is a syntropic process -- teleological.
Space is dual to time -- Einstein.
Left is dual to right, up is dual to down, in is dual to out -- space duality.
Length, distance or space is dual.
Time dilation is dual to length contraction -- Einstein, special relativity.
Any distance is defined by two dual points -- vectors.
The future is dual to the past -- time duality.
Absolute time (Galileo, Newton) is dual to relative time (Einstein) -- time duality.
We predict the future (syntropy) and remember the past -- time duality.
      Time is a dual concept.
The conservation of duality (energy) will be known as the 5th law of thermodynamics!
Symmetry (invariance) is dual to conservation -- the duality of Noether's theorem.
There are new laws of physics.

@@TaylorBrandl There are two types of behaviour in biology, growth and protection -- Bruce Lipton, biologist.
      Growth is dual to protection.
Controlling perception leads to controlling behaviour (action).
Perception (thesis) leads to conception (anti-thesis) synthesizes behaviour (synthesis) -- the Hegelian dialectic.
How you perceive the world determines your behaviour and actions.
Evolutionary pressures or natural selection would over time select for the optimum solution -- target or goal, teleology.
Is natural selection or Darwinism random or based upon teleology?
High or low pass filtering results in a new synthesis which is consistent with the Hegelian dialectic.
Nature is using the Hegelian dialectic to optimize life -- this would be a dual process as the new synthesis is the converging thesis, problem, reaction, solution.
Evolution is the new solution to environmental problems.
