VS, you've done a grand job with these & I've enjoyed them greatly. I'm no vocal expert but here are some thoughts in tribute to this singer's artistry, because we really are in the presence of something very special. Elena Gerhardt has for some time been one of my favourite singers. Her voice was probably just about ideal for lieder: I'd say she had everything one could reasonably wish for, from great power to the most subtle emotional shading. She had superb judgement about how to deploy her tonal variety, & extraordinary control while still sounding remarkably natural. We hear flexibility, precise timing & the ability to inhabit the song fully, with intensity & drama. None better than Gerald Moore at the piano to accompany her. He understood that an accompanist is a storyteller & he was fully an equal in musicianship while being able to exercise fine musical discretion. This is a recording to cherish. Thank you so much!
This is something special for lovers of Art Song. Unfortunately for me, I do find singing in German quite difficult, however well done! I adore Flagstad singing in Norwegian or English, and strangely her German is much softer than normal German German, and so often comes out sounding quite like Norwegian anyway! I do prefer the music of Greig to Brahms, side by side, though the Norwegian never composed a great symphony, and having heard it, I do wonder of his request that it be preserved but suppressed from publication or performance was not actually a good idea! Brahms was ruthless is destroying the music he wrote that he considered sub par. Dear VS: You have managed another superb transfer! Best wishes from George
