Dear EJ and everyone: As a professional stylist, I can accurately attest to the fact that YES Grown People are 100% OUT HERE SHOWIN’ they’re ASSES!! It is nothing above despicable. Never in my 15+ years of hairdressing have seen a more complete and utter lack of respect towards others especially those in the service industry. I had a woman send me almost the exact text when I was in town visiting my family for the holidays. She said she would think it’s a businesswoman that I would value retaining loyal clients over seeing my family for a visit. For reference, I live in Los Angeles and my family lives in Atlanta. That was probably the most polite of these “ loose Karen” text I’ve ever gotten. Unbelievable.
In a previous job, I lived with my students. One student told me at the beginning of the week she wanted to interview me for the school paper, and at the end of the week (when I hadn’t heard from her) I asked what was up with the interview. She goes, “Oh, I was just going to talk with you this weekend.” My response, “I know I live here, but my weekends are for me. Unless you’re bleeding or dying you gotta catch me Monday - Friday, 9-5.” I’m not one ya lil friends.

I know people who would send that text…and that is why you have to just say you’re “unavailable.” If you give them details, they will keep interrogating you and try to make you “available.” I do think a lot of this stuff comes from deep-seated insecurity, so I have some sympathy.
It's not insecurity, it's entitlement. People tend to confuse people's availability with their spare time and people tend to think that as long as they're paying you, then you should be at the every beck and call. No different than an employer expecting you to answer emails on your day off.

I wouldn't have even responded. Every time my job calls me, its either to tell me I did something wrong or wanting to know if I can work an extra shift. I choose not to answer calls or texts. My only liability to you is 3- 12 hours shifts a week. Anything required beyond that, will have you looking for another employee.

I think people seem to forget that people who own their own businesses still need days off like everybody else. Nobody can work 24/7, it will literally exhaust and kill you. Not resting is bad for the human body. Most people in America are already exhausted from working 40 hours or more a week. My job is physically exhausting cause I'm on my feet from 1 to 9 30. People need breaks, life should never be about just working, otherwise you'll work your life away instead enjoying it.

People who provide a service, should still be able to take a day off. I had a client who did this more than once like I saw you around walking another dog but you told me you couldn't walk mine. No, I have more clients nor do you tip so you're not going to have a priority. This is first come first serve, not you're a longer customer so I schedule my day or life around you. Worse mistake I made was working in my neighborhood because that lady was oh I saw you there, I passed you here, I didn't know you shopped there... If the conversation isn't about your dog then I don't really care unless you're a great client then we can chop it up a little bit
Sad part is I have actually had a client confront me while I was out and about with my husband celebrating our anniversary because I blocked off two days where I did not take appointment. And apparently she wanted an appointment during those two days and because it was my anniversary I was not having it I deserve time off and time with my husband and my family she literally walked up on me at the restaurant with my husband I'm looking out good trying to have a good ass night. Wanting to argue with me over me not making myself available after hours for her to get her damn nails done. I tried to remain calm and talk to this lady all cool calm and collected like but it wouldn't happen she just wouldn't let up. We end up getting put out the damn restaurant. When she tried to book with me again I added a $200 fee to her service and the fool still showed up. Needless to say some clients are just crazy s***
When I was younger, my dad (who lives cars and loves fixing them) went into business for himself. On Wednesdays he would close up at 5 to eat with the family. So we got to have him at dinner on Wednesday and al, day Sunday. I guess someone found our address because people would stop by WHILE WE WERE EATING DINNER. Like they stood there and had the balls to ignore the fact we were eating dinner to ask my dad to look at something. Then got pissed when he quoted the cost to fix it. TLDR - some people are rude AF.

This is why clients should not have their Beautician's or Stylist's personal number, cell or home. The shop is where to call.. Besides, what happened to picking up the phone and actually talking to the person? When people do this it is cowardly behavior. Second, the Beautician handled the situation very professionally, because others would have blessed this client out. I would have handled it with professionalism too, but when the client came in for her appointment, I would do her hair; styling it nicely then after collecting my coins, tell her I will no longer be offering her services. The client will think twice next time about pulling this kind of stunt with someone.

I know people who would send that text…and that is why you have to just say you’re “unavailable.” If you give them details, they will keep interrogating you and try to make you “available.” I do think a lot of this stuff comes from deep-seated insecurity, so I have some sympathy.
It's not insecurity, it's entitlement. People tend to confuse people's availability with their spare time and people tend to think that as long as they're paying you, then you should be at the every beck and call. No different than an employer expecting you to answer emails on your day off.

I wouldn't have even responded. Every time my job calls me, its either to tell me I did something wrong or wanting to know if I can work an extra shift. I choose not to answer calls or texts. My only liability to you is 3- 12 hours shifts a week. Anything required beyond that, will have you looking for another employee.

I think people seem to forget that people who own their own businesses still need days off like everybody else. Nobody can work 24/7, it will literally exhaust and kill you. Not resting is bad for the human body. Most people in America are already exhausted from working 40 hours or more a week. My job is physically exhausting cause I'm on my feet from 1 to 9 30. People need breaks, life should never be about just working, otherwise you'll work your life away instead enjoying it.

No, I have more clients nor do you tip so you're not going to have a priority. This is first come first serve, not you're a longer customer so I schedule my day or life around you. Worse mistake I made was working in my neighborhood because that lady was oh I saw you there, I passed you here, I didn't know you shopped there... If the conversation isn't about your dog then I don't really care unless you're a great client then we can chop it up a little bit

Sad part is I have actually had a client confront me while I was out and about with my husband celebrating our anniversary because I blocked off two days where I did not take appointment. And apparently she wanted an appointment during those two days and because it was my anniversary I was not having it I deserve time off and time with my husband and my family she literally walked up on me at the restaurant with my husband I'm looking out good trying to have a good ass night. Wanting to argue with me over me not making myself available after hours for her to get her damn nails done. I tried to remain calm and talk to this lady all cool calm and collected like but it wouldn't happen she just wouldn't let up. We end up getting put out the damn restaurant. When she tried to book with me again I added a $200 fee to her service and the fool still showed up. Needless to say some clients are just crazy s***

When I was younger, my dad (who lives cars and loves fixing them) went into business for himself. On Wednesdays he would close up at 5 to eat with the family. So we got to have him at dinner on Wednesday and al, day Sunday. I guess someone found our address because people would stop by WHILE WE WERE EATING DINNER. Like they stood there and had the balls to ignore the fact we were eating dinner to ask my dad to look at something. Then got pissed when he quoted the cost to fix it. TLDR - some people are rude AF.

This is why clients should not have their Beautician's or Stylist's personal number, cell or home. The shop is where to call.. Besides, what happened to picking up the phone and actually talking to the person? When people do this it is cowardly behavior. Second, the Beautician handled the situation very professionally, because others would have blessed this client out. I would have handled it with professionalism too, but when the client came in for her appointment, I would do her hair; styling it nicely then after collecting my coins, tell her I will no longer be offering her services. The client will think twice next time about pulling this kind of stunt with someone.
