  • In this video, we study the properties of alkenes and some basic methods to synthesize them. Sigma and pi bonds and their relative strengths. Acidity of alkenes and how it relates to sp3-hybridized alkanes. The stability of alkenes based on their substitution and stereochemistry is also discussed. Cis-trans isomerism and its shortcomings, and how it gives rise to E-Z nomenclature using the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) priority system. Synthesis of alkenes using E2 and E1 reactions and how to favor different products (Zaitsev/thermodynamic or Hofman/kinetic).
