And don't even get me started on untranslatable idioms. Horrible. So thank you once again!

I loved Convenience Store Woman, too. I am autistic and Keiko is "autistic-coded". Basically, I take the book as a big metaphor for how society will be able to notice you as Other no matter what you do or how hard you try to personality-mirror, and they will take advantage of you because of it. Keiko was highly qualified to be the manager, as is seen in every page and especially when she enters the other store at the end, and the book hinted twice at the fact that she asked for a salary in the past. "the manager made me realize my wages were designed to cover the cost of getting my body fit for work" or something like that, and this is repeated verbatim twice almost as if Keiko is parroting it back in her head to convince herself again. I think this means that Keiko asked for a raise (beyond deserved) at about the two year mark of working there and was denied. She took it is a definitive answer and did not try after that. This echoes her shutting down behavior after being denied and criticized for her behavior as a child. As an autistic person who has worked in food service jobs for over ten years (student now), a lot of this rang heartbreakingly true to me. You do the job so well, and its sense memories soak into your bones and your body and brain even when you aren't working, and you are still denied from growth within the company. I think the awful character of Shiraha was meant to show how little Keiko thought she deserved after being shocked to learn her behavior as a child wasn't appreciated and since she NEVER got the help she deserved, she shut down without further assistance and was in a long state of dissociation, a numb state of bliss in her little world of appointed importance of the store and her role in it. I think Shiraha is also meant to be a laughable extreme of shunning society, while Keiko is obviously embracing it with not enough authority questioning- the contrast feels very purposeful to me. This book made me a little annoyed because it showed a very stereotypical view of deadpan, robotic autism, and didn't show any of the complexities of autistic life. What were her hobbies? She really didn't care about the taste of food? This is really stereotypical and the perpetuation is harmful, but as I think the novel served as a metaphor that does shine a light on important things, I can let that slide a bit. Just to let you know- I am autistic and I am hyper-empathetic, have hobbies that fill me with joy, and squeal over seeing ducks in the park and love flavor in food. I actually read 'Convenience Store Woman' after you added it to your tbr list... cause it sounded like a weird fun book but it really did explore a ton of deeper themes... I like how the ending is left to imagination.. She's back in the store and she realises her part in the weird existence and she still has the alliance thing with the guy but it's a little wobbly... One of the most ironic moments in the book was when the guy's sister-in-law calls the woman and says that her brother in law is greedy for money constantly and she's simultaneously threatening to sue him for said money... The part where the main character's sister snaps at her and asks her why she cant be normal is a close second... It really elevates the tension in the plot and just puts into prespective how the society deems certain things 'normal' and anyone who doesnt fit in is automatically abnormal Really enjoyed it... The toad in the hole doesn't *have* to be the best. Cooking is a skill, one that we get better at with practice. Nobody with very little experience at it can expect to be a gourmet chef. Just cook, enjoy what you make, and know that you will gradually get better at it. It's a process.
OKAY let’s talk about “before the coffee gets cold” for a sec,,,, i LOVED the details of when for example Kohtake & Kei were crying because Fusagi was forgetting who Kohtake was and it was really sad and the woman in the dress (the ghost) who was reading a novel, closed her book, took her handkerchief and went to the bathroom TO CRY BECAUSE SHE WAS READING THE STORY THAT WAS HAPPENING. another example is when and the end of part 1: the lovers she (the woman in the dress) closes her book that is called “the lovers”. absolutely stunning
what jack said about japanese authors being able to take mundane parts of life and put them under a microscope is SO ACCURATE it's also that way with anime and manga aaaaaa i love them
If you love Japanese literature I would highly recommend The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide, I stopped reading for a number of years after my a levels, but this book helped me rediscover my love of reading, and as you said it takes normal mundane tasks and makes them just so inspiring and comforting to read
My normal screen time is between 7hours and 12 hours. I have no idea how but when I would put only half of that into reading (and i already read much) than i would be readin a four hundred page book in two days... I should definitely consider starting that
I happened upon a murakami book of short stories one day two years ago at my school library and since then I’ve fallen totally in love with magical realism and Japanese literature. The genre makes me think in a way nothing else does.
I read Before coffee gets cold based on your TBR video a couple of weeks ago. I am not a fan of sci-fi type writing, yet somehow I read this book in one sitting (literally!). Thanks for your recommendation :)
Pausing the video for a moment to throw out the idea that maybe THE MOUSE texted the "NHS" text telling you to self isolate. They're diabolical like that.
I just wanted to say that this video inspired me to start reading for enjoyment again (for the first time in years). By picking up a book instead of my phone, I've managed to read 5 books in the past month (which is incredible for me). So, thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏
I have been curious about Exciting Times and am glad you enjoyed. It sounds very intriguing so I will get to it soon. Loved all the other books you finished as well! Convenience Store Woman and Before the Coffee Gets Cold were two of my favourite reads last year. I discovered I liked Japanese fiction last year and now I’m a bit of an addict. Currently reading Lonely Castle in the Mirror and truly enjoying it.
I liked “Before The Coffe Gets Cold” a lot, but I think that there are a few contradictions in how the time travelling works in the book. I don’t know if it’s a matter of translation, cause I read the italian version, but at a certain point I started overthinking it, asking myself things like why the characters didn’t meet their past selves when they went back in time, or like why they could bring objects from the past even if the rules said they couldn’t change the present. Then when they start travelling to the future it gets even more confusing. Btw I loved the writing and the stories are engaging, heartwarming and delicate, so maybe it was the author’s choice to focus more on the introspection of the protagonists rather than on being coherent with the “”science”” behind the book. Just wanted to share my opinion, I love your videos and I’m definitely gonna get Conveniece Store Woman.
My main issue was the fact that the first woman got so little time compared to the other three. It's probably just because her reason for going back was a lot more trivial and she was just meant to introduce the premise but it's so jarring how much time the other three get in comparison
I used to spend A LOT of time on my phone two years ago (last year as well), and I realised that it wasn't good for my mental health, my physical health, and my life overall. I gradually started decreasing my screen time, deleted most of my social media apps, etc... now I use my phone less than 2hrs a day and life is so much more beautiful
"before the coffee gets cold" sounds really similar to this visual novel called "EDDA cafe" where basically this girl finds a mysterious cafe that gives her a special brew. this basically allows her to visit a time in her past, but she cannot change it and she has to return to the present or else her existence will get removed from the world. the time travel only lasts as long as the coffee gets poured into her cup. she visits someone, etc etc. anyways, it plays at your emotions so much, and i'm wondering if it was inspired by this book because it sounds very familiar. this was just a small rambling i'm sorry, but check out the visual novel if you'd like! the book is definitely going on my to-read.
Aaah I've been watching you and thebookleo individually for so long and I know she's mentioned you before! When I saw this title I hoped you were inspired by her and now I am soo happy :)

OKAY let’s talk about “before the coffee gets cold” for a sec,,,, i LOVED the details of when for example Kohtake & Kei were crying because Fusagi was forgetting who Kohtake was and it was really sad and the woman in the dress (the ghost) who was reading a novel, closed her book, took her handkerchief and went to the bathroom TO CRY BECAUSE SHE WAS READING THE STORY THAT WAS HAPPENING. another example is when and the end of part 1: the lovers she (the woman in the dress) closes her book that is called “the lovers”. absolutely stunning
not you calling your house the mickey mouse clubhouse 😭😭😭 also The Convience Store woman ?? one of my fav book of all times!
AHHHH Such a fun age is SO good!!!! So happy you liked it! I was absolutely glued to Emira’s story
14:13 my mum hated that book (conversations with friends) so much that she gave it to me to rip pages out of for art homework
Say hi-5 to your mom. It's one of the rare books that i regret reading, spending my 3 days of precious reading time. I HATE it.
I love the book but tbh I understand why someone wouldn't like it. When it comes to Sally, you love her books or hate it
good idea - i'm going to do this with my kids (should i have any) when i'm older
i love that he actually did 7 days, bc a lot of youtubers only do five when they say they’re gonna do a week of something
Jack's energy is so contagious. If I had to guess his mbti type, I'd say he's an enfp
what jack said about japanese authors being able to take mundane parts of life and put them under a microscope is SO ACCURATE it's also that way with anime and manga aaaaaa i love them
If you love Japanese literature I would highly recommend The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide, I stopped reading for a number of years after my a levels, but this book helped me rediscover my love of reading, and as you said it takes normal mundane tasks and makes them just so inspiring and comforting to read
My normal screen time is between 7hours and 12 hours. I have no idea how but when I would put only half of that into reading (and i already read much) than i would be readin a four hundred page book in two days... I should definitely consider starting that
i came in expecting his screen time to be over 6 hours LMAO i should stop projecting as someone whose screen time is 11 hours a day
I happened upon a murakami book of short stories one day two years ago at my school library and since then I’ve fallen totally in love with magical realism and Japanese literature. The genre makes me think in a way nothing else does.
Words cannot describe how happy watching Jack Edwards' videos makes me. My day is infinitely better already :)
I read Before coffee gets cold based on your TBR video a couple of weeks ago. I am not a fan of sci-fi type writing, yet somehow I read this book in one sitting (literally!). Thanks for your recommendation :)
That first book, the coffee shop one, is amazing. My grandmother gave it to me a few years ago and I always remember the feels I got from reading it 🥺
Pausing the video for a moment to throw out the idea that maybe THE MOUSE texted the "NHS" text telling you to self isolate. They're diabolical like that.
Such A Fun Age gave me the same experience of forgetting that I was reading words on a page and not watching a movie. Only the best books do that!
I just wanted to say that this video inspired me to start reading for enjoyment again (for the first time in years). By picking up a book instead of my phone, I've managed to read 5 books in the past month (which is incredible for me). So, thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏
That was an unexpected intro and I am not mad about it 😂
Agree Jack, Before The Coffee Gets Cold is a great concept and read.
AHHHH BESTIESSSS THE KING IS BACKKKK BOW DOWNNNN😩💕👑💅
honestly your videos are so heartwarming because of your humor and you've really calmed down my ocd so THANK YOU
I almost want to do this but I don’t even know if I could read for half my screen time. But you make me want to try!
Oh I absolutely love your videos, they make me soo happy
Early attendance squad 😂
I have been curious about Exciting Times and am glad you enjoyed. It sounds very intriguing so I will get to it soon. Loved all the other books you finished as well! Convenience Store Woman and Before the Coffee Gets Cold were two of my favourite reads last year. I discovered I liked Japanese fiction last year and now I’m a bit of an addict. Currently reading Lonely Castle in the Mirror and truly enjoying it.
not gonna lie, this is ✨goals✨
Literally I want your closet, the fashion!
the chaotic intro is just perfection!
Jack is sooo FUNNY. I could listen to him talk for the whole day!! Thank you for your amazing book recs always
Jack: posts another video full of good book recommendations
Me: *sighs and pulls out TBR* alright here we go again
I love how the videos start with a bang straight away
It actually makes sense 👁👁
My main issue was the fact that the first woman got so little time compared to the other three. It's probably just because her reason for going back was a lot more trivial and she was just meant to introduce the premise but it's so jarring how much time the other three get in comparison
absolutely loved "convenience store woman"! i honestly found the narrator hilarious sometimes 🤠
Hi Jack, I offer you an interesting challenge: reading only italian books for a week!
Books:
Before the coffee gets cold
Convenience store woman
Such a fun age
Exciting times
Conversations with a friend
Tyyy
Aww I saw loveless in the thumbnail and I really wanted to know what he thought about it
"before the coffee gets cold" sounds really similar to this visual novel called "EDDA cafe" where basically this girl finds a mysterious cafe that gives her a special brew. this basically allows her to visit a time in her past, but she cannot change it and she has to return to the present or else her existence will get removed from the world. the time travel only lasts as long as the coffee gets poured into her cup. she visits someone, etc etc. anyways, it plays at your emotions so much, and i'm wondering if it was inspired by this book because it sounds very familiar. this was just a small rambling i'm sorry, but check out the visual novel if you'd like! the book is definitely going on my to-read.
My daily average screen time is literally
7 hrs 1 min.
mine is 9h 9min 😭
mines 12 ☹
Aaah I've been watching you and thebookleo individually for so long and I know she's mentioned you before! When I saw this title I hoped you were inspired by her and now I am soo happy :)
Such a cool video idea :)
Didn‘t watch the video der, but i‘m so glad, that you are reading “exiting times” because it was among the 3 books i read this month(and year) so far and i’m very exited what you have to say about it!
you are from now on known as jackerella who lives with a mouse 😌
Underrated comment😭😭!
I choked on my water when I read that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love popping into your channel when I need book recs because you read such a random variety of things and just come at them with such an open mind. I never know what the hell you’re going to review.
