Love your comprehensive stlye of teaching!! When people explain what their thought process is when soloing or even when coming up with chord progressions is always the most valuable lesson.. to me at least for sure. Keep it up mate
Totally agree with you with this more rhythm face of the song and I lick a green face for the song love your videos. I’m really channel and moving. Thank you so much. Steve P
Riff: Rhythmic motif that repeats as part of the rhythmic identity of the piece. Lick: A musical phrase often improvised that is part of the story you are telling. That's basically what you said but in slightly different words. Beautiful fluid phrases you have and great rhythm. Thanks for posting. I subscribed.
Bright and happy! Correct, very BB King. A riff is the trademark hook of the song whilst a lick references the 'riff' but is movable. Good lesson. Nice commanding guitar tone. Fron Newcastle, Australia.
Hi Troy, my understanding between a riff and a lick is exactly the same as yours great lesson you’re a natural teacher. Will we be seeing a Patreon page from you?
Hey John thanks so much mate! Glad we are on the same page! Eventually I''ll be introducing a Patreon, but love building a community of guitarists here! Thanks again. Cheers
Yep, a riff is kinda a song motif...the main intro or chorus of a song. A lick is what you do to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop. The world may never know. Lol. I'm old.
Riff, I’d say a Riff is the “Hook” or the song i.e Tony Iommi “King of the Riff”. Lick, I’d say a lick is the “Transition” or “Passage” phrase most commonly associated with a “Verse” and “Bridge” intro of the song, mostly “spontaneously formed” i.e. Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray. Just my opinion….
I tend to agree on your understanding of a riff v lick, your riff however was played slightly wrong, no offence meant but when playing “ whole lot of love” sound the open open “D string as well as the “D “ on the A string and then open E string along with E fifth chord. Not complaining just trying to help your playing as well.
Yes mate, a riff and a lick are exactly how you explained it👍
Phew!
defiantly spot on 👍👍👍👍
Very nice ❤
Thank you!

Your so welcome mate 👍👍
I think of a riff as the instrumental hook and a lick as a phrase. That’s just me. :)
Totally agree!
After years of thinking the two terms are used interchangeably, the conclusion I have come to is:
Riff = Rhythm, Lick = Lead
100%!
very good, especially your intro!!
Cheers!

Interesting!! Love hearing how everyone else thinks of these things, thanks for sharing!
Lick 3 ......don't you mean the interior of the B7 chord?....I'm hearing you say A7
Don't get me wrong....is a vary good lesson......just I might be on to comprehending something.....and my head might explode!
It’s the interior of an ‘E7’ chord. My Aussie accent doesn’t help 😂😂. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Greg. And yes I am aware. I’m surprised it took so long for someone to mention it! Cheers
