For 2025, the Royal Mint has produced for the first time proof Sovereign coins in pure silver. The silver Sovereign coins have the same diameter and the same weight as 22 karat gold Sovereign coins.
0:04 💡 The sovereign was introduced by Henry VII in 1489, symbolizing royal authority and England's emergence on the European stage with a large, glamorous gold coin. 1:37 🔄 The sovereign underwent name changes over the centuries, known as the Guinea in the 17th and 18th centuries, before its reintroduction in 1817 with a neoclassical design. 3:22 🐉 The iconic design of St. George slaying the dragon, introduced in 1817, became closely associated with the sovereign and remains a classic even today. 3:49 💰 During the Victorian period, the sovereign was issued in large quantities, becoming more accessible to a broader range of people as wages increased. 4:02 🌍 The First World War led to a decline in the use of sovereigns as circulating currency, but they found new roles as commemorative coins, stabilizers of international exchange rates, and even as elements in spy novels like James Bond.
I was lucky enough to meet Dr Kevin Clancy and was shown around this museum, and were allowed to handle some of these stunning coins. If you have not been on the VIP gold tour at the mint......get it booked. I’m there on the first tour of 2020 you also get to strike your own sovereign.
At a hefty price though! (£480 for the sovereign strike!) Although, having looked at it just now, I'm definitely going to book a gold tour. I went along on one of the standard tours a couple years back, but this seems like a whole different experience. I had no idea these were even a thing! So thank you very much for informing me : )
@@ChimozuFu No problems, the level of access is amazing, you get to speak with the staff, machine operators, you also get detail entry into the Die and proof areas, I saw dies for new coins and got to speak with the craftsmen and women who painstakingly hand finish the dies, it gave me a new apperception into the level of work that the RM puts into our coinage.
@@golddiggerdave I will be booking I think soon, been to the normal tour for the last four SYOs, time to step the game up to the next level I think! Don't think I'll be shelling out for the Sovereign SYO though! You can strike a Silver Proof as an alternative right?

The "new" sovereign is made with PAMP Suisse and the British Mint and contains copper which gives it a rose-ish color. I've seen new ones on Apmex a couple years ago.
A rather annoying siren 🚨 melody in the background! 😬 Took the drawer of sovereigns out and forgot the alarm? 😆 Wished he spoke a little more about the quality/purity of the metal and its weight over time, not just the denomination.

A 3d scanned library of the collection would be an amazing academic resource. Ian fleming novels, what a wonder. A pleasure to watch and learn.
Great video I'd like to have a rummage through those drawers!
I love the history of coins, thanks for the video : )
In a world of crypto, buy sovereigns.
Interesting, I never realised how significant the sovereign was. This has changed my perception of the coin!
Learned a lot thanks for sharing 👌🏽
Look at all them Swann cabinets. Must be a joy working there?
Is that a type of cabinet or a manufacturer? I was thinking of buying one of the cabinets the mint sells online

I have one British gold coin/souvenir 24carret gold year 1923
I have one year 2012
are you referring to the colonial? Because the sovereign was only minted in India for about a year just after the first world war.

Work for one Sovereign back then and still we work for one or two Sovereigns today.
I also have 1 of the same gold coin.. we can contact you if you wish... the year 1900 is written as the date....
Fascinating story. The modern ones are way too coppery looking, so I pass on them. And this is from someone who favors the 1/4 AGE, which is also 22k.

Gold is real money. Start educating your people to ditch fiat money and fractional reserve banking and start using gold and silver again.
