Nobody's gonna think ur lying doll. TOOL does 'things' to everyone- with or without their permission. 😉 MJK's name is pronounced like may-nerd. But it's a stage name based on a character from the tv show MASH. His name is actually James Herbert Keenan- he goes by Jim. He also has 3 bands- all uniquely different and all brilliant. TOOL A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. He is definitely a mad genius. MJK's lyrics are always multi layered in meaning- but that's one of the transcendent qualities of art- it's subjective. To understand what the meanings are to him though- it's extremely helpful to have a working knowledge of hermetic principles philosophy math and science. Especially the psychological sciences. Jungian to be overly specific. But luckily- u don't have to have these to simply enjoy the music. Please- IF u would- do 'Eulogy' or 'ÆNIMA' next. U will dig them both I think. I really enjoy ur reactions so far. Ur a sharp kid. Kind of gives me hope for the future- something that is lacking these days. Jmo.

It might blow your mind to find out this song is structured around the Fibonacci sequence. The syllables start with 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. Maynard follows this in different parts of the song. Also, the musical count can be expressed by the Fibonacci sequence as well. You can do a deep dive into this song alone :)

    • @6ic6ic6ic
      @6ic6ic6ic 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

People often mention about the first verse and this part of the sequence. It goes beyond this though.
The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)
      This repeats.
Maynard then begins the prechorus with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8). Push the envelope (5). Watch it bend (3)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (2), so (1), much (1), more that (2), beckons me (3), to look through to these (5), infinite possibilities (8)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3.
There's also the time signatures 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is one of the numbers further along the sequence like you mentioned. The length of the verses are a number in the sequence. The moment he starts singing is at 1:37 which is 1.68 minutes the golden ratio that expresses the spiral when you tile the plane.
Polyphonic has great video that breaks it all down including more than just this.

The instrumentation is done first, and then they give it over to Maynard for lyrics. It boggles my mind that anyone could find lyrics that are not only compatible with such complex compositions, but are also deep and meaningful. Pure genius.

Bold choice for a 2nd Tool song to listen to 👍
Some other good introductory songs I'd suggest are "46&2", "Vicarious" or "Sober"... Tool can have some pretty technical music, so starting off with some more 'simple songs' (by their standard) is easier to get your feet wet with their music.

The majority of us are just super happy for another fan in the army and for new TOOL content. Just my opinion but...Lateralus is the best example of them working as a unit. Or Rosetta Stoned. Songs that showcase the talent of the individual members well, in my opinion are: Maynard James Keenn/vocals-The Grudge, Justin Chancellor/bass-Descending, Adam Jones/guitar-7empest. Fight me TOOL army! First listen don't do live or music videos. It can distract from the music. Always have lyrics. I think that's everything. Spiral out homie. Oh. And their bass player is British.

When you are born, you only see in black and white or what really is called grey scale ,and then red and yellow are the first colors you see. Nice try on the first listen.

Pause, rewind or start over as much as you want to. Whatever is needed for you to get the moat out of the songs.

We know a genuine reaction to Tool when we see one…it makes us happy to see others “pick up what theyre puttin down”. Great analyzation of the lyrics as well. As a percussionist, one of my favorite things to listen to is polyrhythmic structure. When i watch someone new react to
Tool, im always wondering how theyll react to that element. It is always they get it/understand it or absolutely not/cant catch the groove. Im glad you do 😁…keep doing more Tool reactions, we’ll come along with you..,I have yet to see anyone react to The Patient or Jambi

You need to see them on a live video to really feel them.

I'd say 46&2 next, so you'd get some idea of 1990's Tool

Have you ever gotten an ECG? It strikes me as a little odd when people don't recognize the heartbeat at the start but then I realized not everyone has free healthcare and likely done an ECG.
