I’m thinking of using a DL32R in the studio to replace my large analog mixer, but USB will create latency in my DAW. Can audio be sent thru gigabit Ethernet instead ?

You can send audio over ethernet with the Dante Expansion Card. This uses the Dante protocol so it can be sent over any typical network to any other Dante device. To get it into your computer you would use the Dante Virtual Soundcard software. audinate.com/products/software/dante-virtual-soundcard

So all I need is one of these and a ipad? I don’t have to connect it like with a portable WiFi router?

For the DL32R, you will need a wireless router. No internet is needed, just WiFi. The environment and size of venue will determine how powerful of a router you should get.

I set up my 1608 on a stand on the side of the stage. the 32R doesn't seem nearly as portable. Having the inputs face me as the engineer, opposed to facing upward and toward the stage like on the 1608, which then go the opposite direction to the performers, seems counterintuitive. Rackmounting seems more suited for studio use rather than live. How can I make this work for my setup?

It' a great concept but is anybody else nervous about mixing on an iPad only with no physical controls?

Just from experience. When something gets out of control it's nice to know you can run over and pull a physical fader down if the wireless drops out.

Sometimes not having the physical fader to grab can be a hassle but you do get used to it. What I don't like is that it takes a second or 2 for the software to read where your finger is. It's not instant.
