What's the Louvre like without tourists? Pretty amazing (and pretty empty).
My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off TH-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

Love how the French are being trail blazers in exercising how to do the new normal correctly. A beautiful example of citizens respecting themselves, each other and all their country has to offer. They are handling adversity with class, dignity and intelligence. While back state side. . .

I heard Chris Hayes on "All In" perfectly describe this the other day. Paraphrasing: Other countries handled the virus responsibly and have come out the other side. Under Trump the US has decided that we are just going to live inside our house being on fire. I thought that summed it up pretty well. "Hey, our house is on fire! Okay. Let's just move to another room where the smoke isn't as bad...yet."

I remember that, too. I think someone attacked the painting and that's why they had to protect it more. (Maybe I'm remembering that wrong.) I did enjoy going every week, too when I was a student there. But the Louvre is so massive that it's exhausting. I now prefer Musee d'Orsay.

Under normal circumstances i really don´t understand the Mona Lisa hype, to loose so much time when there is so much equally interesting things to see. I never miss the Dutch and French renaissance and baroque, absolutely gorgeous and then there are the impressive Mesopotamian and Egyptian artefacts, well it never ends.

rather childish comment given the circumstances - let me respond in a slightly more adult fashion :
Closing the Louvre or any museums is pure nonsense, as a physician with over 40 years experience ,with a degree in Public Health, and fully cognizant of the history, mythology, and various methods of simulating epidemics this is medically idiotic nonsense. But if you ever had any doubt of the power of government this is a brazen example of not only their un-limited open-ended arbitrary power but power that devolves from the propaganda of fear as embraced by the stupid, foolish , compliant, and gullible. I am in. a very large city and we are seeing this virus NOWHERE . But that is what your own eyes are telling you. The statistics are irrefutable, the incidence is extremely low , it does not warrant ANY restrictions. Take a stand against fascism , irrational fear, and ridiculous foolishness. !!

Is it really all that surprising most Louvre tourists are far enamored with Mona Lisa than the other more gloriously detailed paintings? Most people are brainwashed sheep- that's why McDonald's is so popular when in fact, you can find tons of vastly superior mom & pop burger joints in pretty much any city/neighborhood, or even make a better burger at home.

So strange to see the Louvre that quiet! My husband and I were there last September. The Mona LIsa was in a temporary location, which took us forever to find and when we did finally find it there was an hour and 45 minute wait. So we skipped it. She wasn't what I came there for anyway. Winged Victory was everything I expected and more. The way they have her displayed as you come up that hallway to the stairs is exquisite.

'Pandemonium' reminds me of Mordor. Have you been to the British Museum? The 'Mona Lisa' is like the 'Rosetta Stone' in the British Museum and if you're 5'1 you can forget being able to see it all with the throngs of people surrounding it. Do I sound bitter? That's just the lack of coffee talking. *Sigh*

I thought it was a John Martin even before you mentioned it. He came from a Northumberland village about 30 miles from where I live and had a unique vision, even for the Romantic era. For another apocalyptic painting of his that might inspire you, check out images of Sodom and Gomorrah, and The Bard , both kept in my local art gallery. Definitely a good time to visit the Louvre atm.

WOW! Hardly any people, no crowding you out or disturbing your thoughts, so nice! Big difference I've noticed about mask wearing, you don't see a ton of people with them half off, only covering the mouth like I see here in Cali. Staying home is maddening but it beats fraternizing with reckless Americans. Thank you so much for sharing the experience. Cheers! 😎

I'm glad that we've got a decent percentage of proper mask usage going on - we still have our mask misusers, but it is better here for sure atm =)

Thank you for a vicarious walk thru the Louvre. If only Living in the US didn't mean being ostracized by the rest of the world due to our inability to find a way to get to the other side of the ever increasing rise of COVID cases. I love the Louvre. I have always taken it in relatively small chunks in order to simply spend time with the treasures it contains. La Jaconde is great, but only 1 of so many greats. As an art major in school and having studied Neo Stoicism in Art History, all I can say is Wow. I love so many of the art museums in Paris. And art that isn't in a museum like the Chagall in the Palais Garnier. More uncrowded museum was please!

Here's hoping the homeland regains some sense of sensibility soon so you can get back for your own museum times. The Louvre is an experience on its own, but getting in while it was empty was so nice. Happy I could share it ☺️

Wow! Just wow! That's crazy and must have been delightful. I've never seen the Mona Lisa without a crowd around it. I loved the puzzled look on your face when you said "I think I'm starting to enjoy this?" with that questioning tone in your voice. One other nice thing is that with the crowds way down it's easier to imagine what it must have looked like when it was a private palace for the king. The crowd size is probably comparable to the number of his servants and courtiers.

One of my favorite places in Paris. One January day in 2016, I was able to find one of the quiet corners of the Louvre. I had the Salle St. Louis, before the improved cases and lighting were installed, all to myself for about 10 minutes. Touching the stone's chisel marks and getting up close to the gargoyles was unforgettable.
