when you have the 3 vs 3 pawns opposite each other if you don't want a break-through or if you do want a break through you push the middle pawn. then if the opponent takes the middle pawn and you don't want a breakthrough you just recapture towards the centre. this recapture blocks everything up. of course if its advantageous to generate a breakthrough you can push the correct side-pawn instead. maybe you got a bit confused in the game because pushing the middle pawn can produce both outcomes depending on your future decision and you wanted to avoid producing a breakthrough.
quite possibly whenever you see this formation and its just king and pawns you should strongly consider pushing the middle pawn. i guess sometimes depending on where the kings are and the pawns are it will be incorrect move. like it was not necessary in this game but it was also not harmful because the king could never stop the passed pawn and couldn't reach the other pawns in time. but sometimes its losing to push the pawn defensively because it wastes an important tempo.
