I have an Airedale Terrier (9 years old) who was fully trained as a puppy, but developed a bad habit of pulling on walks after he was charged at by an aggressive dog a few years back.
Recently though - after watching this video - I tried using a slip leash on him, reinforced the heel command and it seems to have worked brilliantly. Thank you so much!

I’ve been watching a lot of your videos mostly to help separation anxiety for my rescue beagle. I’ve learned so much. I think the biggest takeaway is that although she is a rescue, that doesn’t mean I need to “feel sorry” for her. She needs a leader with guidance and direction. With me giving that removes her confusion on how to exist in this world. And, that gives her so much more freedom (ironically) to accept love and joy.

What are best dog breeds that can live outside full time for example in the backyard? (Provided proper shelter, mental/physical activity and socialization)

I have a six-month-old GSD, he is not aggressive with animals and doesn't mind when he sees them on the street, I also have no problem with pulling on the leash when walking with him, the problem is when he sees strangers, he was introduced to people when he was a puppy but when he sees strangers walking on the street, I wouldn't say aggressive because he doesn't growl, but he is very vigilant and barks a lot, it worries me a lot because he also gets like that with children, is there anything I could do about this?

Please address using slip leads with slim head dogs that will twist and slip out. I've got a GSD. She pulls often. I have a harness for holding her so she can't escape. Collars and slip leads... She slips easily. She'll also pull to the point of choking. What about the prong collars?

Slip leash, when properly put on (like the ones at the dog show) cannot choke your dog. I have a French Mastiff and a Staffordshire and it works wonderful 😜

@@MCD3822Dog show slip collars absolutely CAN choke a dog, maybe even more so because dog show slip leads are made of very thin and slippery nylon. Perhaps your own large dogs are less sensitive, but smaller dogs could easily be affected by the thin slip show collars .

Slip leads and choke leads are not quite the same things. 'Slip Leads' as discussed here, are not thin slippery nylon. A slip lead also requires the human/walker to respond in a specific way. The lead won't work by itself

@cassieoz1702 Which is why I'd like the subject addressed in more depth, especially with narrow head doggos. Big head dogs don't slip out of leads anollars etc so easy. Also, some dogs are more adept at being twisty little Houdinis. My dog also likes to drop and gator roll.

Thanks for the video. I found a stray Belgian malinois in July, and we do a lot of walking because we live in the city. I wish we lived back on the farm so he could run and play. Leash pulling is sometimes a problem. I have ptsd and diabetes, so I am trying to turn him into a service dog. He's a young dog.. I think he is around a year old now. His name is Murphy, and they love him at my local grocery store. The security guard went out of his way to tell me they wanted me to bring him into the store. He is afraid of the refrigerators. I don't know if it's the buzzing of the motors or the cold slippery floors, but he locks his legs and stops walking when we get close to them. Do you have any suggestions to fix this behavior problem. He is a smart dog and has a heck of nose. When I found him, I had to carry him up and down the stairs. I also dog walk my neighbors Neopoitan mastiff. Pulling is a problem when it comes out the front door, but he is better after a couple of minutes of walking.

Some breeds, especially protection types have a "fear period". I'd never seen it before. One day I went for a walk with my Cane Corso and she was terrified by a bin, a postbox and wind blowing. It lasted from about 10-18 months and I started to think she had a nervy temperament. She recovered her confidence and now she's grown up is a very sensible dog. There is light at the end of the tunnel so don't give up hope!

So: 1) Teach the dog the correct position to be in. 2) Do "the tune up drill" and 3) Use a slip leash and if that's not working, call a pro. Oh and yes, that small bit about your online classes. Can anyone seriously say they watched this video and found out how to "Stop Your Dog PULLING With These Easy Tips!"? I mean, just up front: How do you teach the dog the correct position? I think a slow witted chimp could figure out that we need to teach the dog this, but HOW is the critical question; And what on earth is the "tune up drill" that's supposed to work wonders? Finally; what leash to use? Seriously? Is that honestly what you want to tell people is one of the most critical three things they need to know?
I appreciate that what you really want to do is to sell courses to make money, we all need to live, but all these "FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH YOUR DOG NOW WITH THESE EASY STEPS" videos are so annoying. If that's what you want to call your video, please at least include something useful.

You can use a slip collar on your dog too. Get a nice thin one because then you need to pull less to make your dog feel it which is non verbal communication with your dog.
Will has more videos of how to use a slip lead. We did his training academy online and it was well worth it.

I bought your slip lead for my gsd and,no disrespect to you but,its awful!! I use it the way you showed with absolutely no effect. I have now resorted to a head collar with far more success. She walks beautifully with it. No pulling, walks to heel etc. The other day i tried the slip lead again and, again,it was a terrible walk. I think, for me,i will have to continue with the headcollar, until i have totally honed the walking to heel

slip leads, choke collars, and other types of coercion device are not neutral to use at all though. you have to use them really well and be very conscious of what you are doing because they inflict pain, and that can have undesired effects on training when you make even the smallest mistakes.
a pretty nice tool that is much more idiot proof to teach a dog not to pull is a strong elastic leash. sadly most elastic leash you'll see are very weak and made only to absorb shocks, but you can pretty easily make one by using a big elastic band for gym training and protecting it with a loose sleeve of fabric.
what it does is that when your dog is pulling, instead of yanking your arm by burst, he experience progressive and continuous resistance as he pulls further away from you. this is way more tiring for the dog who's muscle overall work better in bursts, and way less tiring for your human muscles that are better with long endurance. when the dog gets tired and stop pulling, you can reward him to reinforce the idea that things are much better when he doesn't pull. of course it works best when the dog is not yet an enduring adult who's crazy about pulling hard on the leash and trying to eat passerby, but it still always help even just by making it easier for you to hold your dog.
