The one fear I have as an almost young adult, is not being able to afford something even if it's a small thing. You just get that feeling of sadness and embarrassment whenever you don't have enough to buy something you REALLY REALLY want.

I experienced something like that...but it wasn't because I didn't have Money. My card got canceled because I was in the process of changing my name and the old card was all I could use at the moment. Well, they never told me they were deactivating my card, so in a restaurant full of people...my card declined...luckily, my brother was there to save me, but man, so embarrassing.

I’m an adult and a mom and it’s still embarrassing sometimes, also makes my social anxiety much worse. Growing up literally surviving on canned foods made me really appreciate the money I do make, but I feel so bad if there’s something I can’t get for myself or my kids sometimes.

Its actually good and necessary to let your child make mistakes in a safe and controlled environment. Shit happens and children need to learn how to handle life. Its better to teach your kids about consequences and how to move past mistakes then to shelter them to the point where they conceptualize any minor inconvenience as a threat because you validated that anxiety with your bubble wrap parenting

How do yall kids get that much. I never had an allowance when i was a kid. Even if i did chores. (Not that my parents are bad, atleast they taught me how to be responsible about money and finances at a young age. ) Maybe its a white people thing about getting big amounts of allowances. But my biggest allowance ever in an Asian household is to be able to live under a roof. And when i bought sum, i used the money i got from chinese new year or my birthday money. Even if ion get allowances as a kid, atleast keep track on things i bought, not spending much on makeup and almost $1000 wprth of items. + Doing really good in school is not much of an excuse for going over budget, its just common sense to do well in school. First of all, the $300 Grace had WAS her parents money😂 because her mother gives her allowance money so she saved it up. Second, y’all must constantly have mommy and daddy money to save y’all when y’all mess up😂 the point is teaching your kid responsibility. And it shouldn’t be embarrassing. As an adult sometimes you go over budget too, so you have to decide what you really want and leave the rest of the shelf. You don’t call you parents as an adult because you don’t have enough money to spend at ulta right? 😂Grace wasn’t keeping track here like she normally does, probably because she was excited but that doesn’t mean her mom should have bailed her out and her mom isn’t a “b” for not bailing her out. And by the looks of it, she had a lot in the basket left, it would have been well over $300. Not a “little” bit over $300.

She could have told her before why wait until they got to the register to give the cashier the almost the entire cart back full of items ? 😂 she should have reminded her to keep track on her phone. She still would have learned the lesson to stay in budget.

My first reaction was to disagree with you but after reflecting, i can kind of see your point. But while this was probably an inconvenience to the cashier, mom will not always be there to remind her that she needs to stay within her budget so it is a teachable moments. Not all learning is from preventative information, sometimes you need a tangible and relatable experience for yourself.

@@spacecaek1665 I see your point but I also don't think this was the right time to do it she's buying at Ulta a lot of people spend their time there and this was genuinely an inconvenience for the cashier but I do see your point and I do agree

I agree. It's a horrible way. I know kids who felt unloved because that's how their parents would teach them not to buy too much. I believe it's awful to do something like that - tell her she can buy whatever, but make her leave half the things she wanted at the shop. They're kids - they should have a childhood, not learn how not to spend money. That can be easily learnt by a discussion, not by humiliating them in public before everyone else

Great parenting technique. I had a similar sort of rule growing up. I had pocket money and that was all I had. I messed up before and learnt from my mistakes. It has taught me to be careful with my money as an adult now. It's better the children mess up now with a few dollars than mess up as an adult in a mountain of debt.

Did she also learn to put the items she couldn’t buy back on the shelf? I know it’s technically the employees job, but I feel it’s kind of excessive and disrespectful to let a kid do this and then make the employees restock everything knowing they are adding an excessive number of items they can’t afford to their basket.

A little tip for next time: start adding up the price of each item you pick up. Then subtract it from the amount of money you have. Ulta is super expensive, so maybe make a list of all the items you want and only get those. If you see another item you like, add it to your list for next time. Or see if they have it at another store for cheaper

I feel so bad for her! although it is a good lesson to learn how to budget, I feel like the mom knew that the daughter was well over her budget but didn’t say anything and set her up for embarrassment. She could have still learned the lesson of not getting too carried away by just telling her that it’s way too much and to be careful. I feel like the humiliation was unnecessary, and the mom was literally posting about it on the internet too! Isn’t that enough of a lesson already if she already faced the public humiliation. Posting your child’s down falls that you caused for approval of the internet saying that you such a good parent for doing this is seriously hurting your child. I’m not trying to be rude, I just know that I would be so embarrassed if this happened to me.
Edit: I forgot to add that when they left the store the mom continued to talk about it, and said that the daughter looked really happy about what she got when she was literally about to burst into tears.
