Thank you for teaching us. Three years now from when I started my journey, I did Aikido, learned about Gumdo and always able to stregnthen knowledge on kendō. 💮
You're very welcome!!
thank you sensei..ive just started kendo and this video has really helped me
Your videos are so useful!!! They remind me of many important things!
Aaron Sunshine Good to hear that!
Thanks for this video! Very helpful!
You'e welcome!
Excuse my ignorance, but there is something that I need your guidance on. I do not know whether you should make a stepping motion or a sliding motion with your right foot when you advance to strike. I also ponder on wether you should swing the bokken/shinai/katana before or after you step with your left foot.
Thank you very much for making this great video, it helped me a lot and inspired me to try and join a kendo club and to do it along with aikido and archery.
Thanks again!
Hi! Thank you for your question. First off, please do follow your sensei first before mine.
The basic suburi must be done with sliding. However, when you become advanced you lift your right foot up and proceed to strike.
In the basic suburi, you strike as your left foot comes forward. When you lift your right foot up, you strike a target as your right foot lands.
Hope this clarifies your questions!
Thank you very much for the excellent explanation and quick reply!!!
Also, if you don't mind me asking, if when fighting an opponent you enter a kind of lock (where you are in the same position as your opponent and in a position where yours and your opponent's arms are put in a way which prevents both of you to strike) , should you try to push him back and after hit him, take a few step backwards to put some distance between you and your opponent or try to strike in another way (like a lateral strike or one to the throat)?
(Sorry if the question is unclear)
I am glad that you liked my explanation :)
OK, so you and your opponent strike at the same time and you and your opponent are stuck because your arms and your opponent's. Am I right?
If I am right, that is one of the common situations. And I should say it all depends. There are no "right" move. If you are so close to your opponent, you can execute a taiatari or you can get into tsubazeriai to seek an opportunity to execute a hiki-waza.
If you and your opponent bounce into each other, you tend to bounce backward after the contact with your opponent. Then you have a bit of distance between you and your opponent. That is a dangerous zone so you have to decide either you step back to take more distance, you strike from there or you get close.
There is no right way but of course there is always a better choice.
Hope this helps!
Thanks again for the amazing, quick reply!
It answered perfectly my question!
Good! Thanks for your questions!

I've trained hand to hand, a weapon felt right. No martial art paid training. Never lost a fight. I am getting bored. I challenge Joe Biden to a wrestle duel. I hate wrestling. Long live the night angels! lol
