They should just send him a check for payoff of the newest excavator, that would be nice. Who else would have ever thought they would be addicted to watching somebody move dirt, take down trees and build ponds?

When I was a kid picking pole beans the farmer's usually had one lone tree often at the intersection of four fields that we called the "lunch tree". It was where we went for shade and also kept the water bottle. That was a five gallon glass jug filled with well water from the homestead and wrapped in burlap bags to keep it cool. Just before lunch someone would drive down with a couple of cheese sandwiches for each worker and that was lunch time. Quarter inch or more of block cheddar on white bread and cool well water was actually a lot better than our school lunches we were use to. Amazing how a bunch of ten to twelve year olds could fill up bushel boxes of pole beans per day. Paid a whole fifty cents per box but somehow that old farmer got two bushels into one heaping bushel box for those two quarters! Kids sure learned the meaning of hard work that way. I do remember one day in 1965 that he paid me with a five dollar silver certificate from 1910 if memory serves. Shame I spent that on comic books and Pepsi. Paid another kid with an actual US Dollar once that sure looked funny since we were use to Federal Reserve Notes not real dollars. You never really knew what he might pull out of that old house when pay time came. Made us stand in the front yard while he got it from his hiding hole inside.

I had a similar experience hauling hay in East Texas. This was back before huge round bales took over the hay business but throwing hay was a good, if back breaking, job in the summer for a teenage boy. You first threw it up on the trailer and then up into the barn. You could earn as much as 30 or 40 bucks a day if you didn’t mind working a 12 plus hour day. And the rancher usually threw in lunch, which as you say was a few sandwiches, usually ham or bologna and cheese, and some chips. And lots of cold well water. It might be a 100 but the water out of the well from 100 feet down was in the 60s. Plenty cool enough.

A couple of kids from my home town put themselves through college hauling hay, little square bales, I don’t know how many in a days time.
Both are retired now 1 was a lawyer, the other was a appliance store owner. Both nice guys. Worked hard & never forget.

Absolutely no doubt that he's gonna get them.

I just had a crazy thought (this is what happens when I have wayyyyy too much time on my hands 😅), you should create a video game involving creating a pond damn, creating burn piles and moving the dragline from point A to point B through obstacles and try to move a pile of dirt with in a certain amount of time. It would be a hoot👏🏾! 😆😆😆😆

  • @AncientHermit

That gum tree - largely ridiculous for just being stuck out there on it's own, and ridiculously large because it had no competition for nutrients. Some stuff just gets odd over time. Be well.😉

Just a thought for businessmen close to Chris. Post processing of the trees felled is clearly not in the plan for Letdig18. To me it means a local outfit (or startup) could dovetail at the end and collect and process the wood for firewood, conversion into charcoal or some such. Anyone else see the opportunity?

Yeah, that's a double heap of poison ivy alright. About made me itchy just seeing in video form. Can't imagine seeing it up close like you did there Chris, and then having to see it again when editing the video.
Make sure to spray the bucket, thumb and boom down with a good wash soap so the ivy oils don't stick to the metal and you get a rash from it a few days later. Watch out for the smoke off that stuff too, the oils and whatnot get vaporized in a fire and tend to settle on anything. Breathing the smoke in can be right deadly if you're allergic at all. Better yet, after getting the wad of the stuff burned. Don't rub hands on the machine till you can let it get rained on a few times or you can get your power washer out throw some dawn into the washer suction. Spray it off all over. Learned that lesson many years ago and ain't forgot it a second every time I see poison ivy.
