The Battle for Kham Duc, May 12, 1968. (one of many combat missions). We flew in support of the ammunition resupply and emergency evacuation of that Special Forces outpost against the heavily armed North Vietnamese Army (NVA) regulars. My door gunner Tony Yates and I were awarded the Air Medal with V Device and two oak leaf clusters. Our pilot, Mr. John Donahue (WO1) and the co-pilot Chris Garbow received Distinguished Flying Crosses.

Battle of Kham Duc - May 12, 1968.
My Chopper 282 went in that day with a 1000 pounds of ammo for resupply. When we landed on the air field, my door gunner and I kicked the boxes out, then three soldiers got aboard, one wounded. Mortar rounds came pounding in as we took off. Yes, " in and out " as Colonel Jackson said. A miracle a mortar round didn't hit our chopper ? Or just lucky ?... My Pilot's received the Distinguished Flying Cross, my Door Gunner and I, Air Medals with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
