Very very true! Not only one of the world’s greatest drummers but a genius in explaining the musician’s mind set for relationships. I have seen exactly what he is saying on many occasions with several occupations!!
I had the same thing happen to me as a broadcaster. They're all into you because they hear you on the radio. I had a few groupies at the stations I worked, but wisely, never got involved with any of them, though.
"The musician's mindset for relationships." Then there was The Mamas & The Papas. I suppose some would think the solution would be married band members, and thus each is "married to the music" and they live happily ever after. Michelle was married to fellow band member and leader Papa John. That just wasn't enough for her however. You would think that both would have understood the "I'm dedicated to my work" attitude, and both would have enjoyed being together and being musical kindred souls. Not so. Already married Michelle had to have Denny, but single Mama Cass wanted Denny first. Single Denny however preferred to be in the arms (and bed) of a fellow band member's own wife instead! Geezus! Talk about back stabbing and sleeze! Mama Cass was broken hearted, but "Mitchy" was used to this sort of thing. A frustrated John was so used to Mitchy's constant flings that he wrote a song for the group "Go Where You Wanna Go" (Do What You Wanna Do). I love those opening cellos. Hal Blaine may have played (probably did) on this track, I don't know--- I know he is on "California Dreamin" and several other M&P tracks. The group broke up briefly. Of course John wasn't exactly a saint, but that's another story. relationships Anyway I guess relationships are what they are whether you're in the business or out. Even an understanding and knowing all that goes into what musicians do won't guarantee success. Hal Blaine could have married Carol Kaye and it still could have ended up in divorce. Now gold diggers don't give a damn about what you do as long as you bring in the gold, and THAT may have been the root of some of Hal's problems. That would have spelled D-O-O-M from the start. I would have used D-I-V-O-R-C-E but Tammy Wynette has already done it, besides Buddy Harman MAY be on drums, I don't know. Some may call Buddy Harman the "Hal Blaine of Nashville." But to avoid pissing off a lot of people, some may call Hal Blaine the "Buddy Harman of Rock."
Smart intelligent master musician of the three minute pop song speaking from his heart hoping he's up there continuing his trade RIP amazing 👏 footage joe thank you
Mickey Rooney (married eight times) said it best. He said you should always get married in the morning, that way if it doesn't work out at least you've got the rest of the day.
Well, he should have married Elizabeth Taylor (married eight times too) and they could do it everyday singing as a duet the Lennon/McCartney song "Eight Days a Week."
Hal, I think of you every time I sit down to practice or play a gig. You were my first inspiration to start on the drumming path, and you inspired me to stay on it for a lifetime. There is no greater gift than that. The incredible playing you did on the Jackie Lomax album "Is this What You Want" is my personal favorite, and I must admit I stole shamelessly from some of those tracks. Also. thank you, Hal, for always being genuine, caring, and funny as hell.
I started playing guitar at age 9 when EVH was blowing up. It was Eddie that kept me playing and I owe him greatly for that as you do Hal. You never forget those who inspired you most and kept you going. Hal is one of my all time fav drummers. Brian Wilson knew, he’s the guy you Lean on in a session. RIP Hal. RIP Eddie.
Alot of wisdom there from one of the greatest musicians that ever set on the kit. My family did the interior design of his house in Studio City in the late 1960's. Hung his gold records on the wall. Hal's hobby was renovating Roll's Royces at the time. He was at the top of his game. You wonder what happened.
I could listen to this man for hours! What a gentle soul. And if, he is the way he seems, these ex wives are perhaps the most ignorant women on this planet.
Hal was such a gem. He had brilliance, sparkle and like all gems, he was uniquely himself. The deceptively simple back beat he put under the Ronettes song, 'Be My Baby 'changed the world and was often imitated. throughout the 1960s.
For anyone interested, the mansion was at 2427 Castilian Drive in the Outpost Estates hills above LA - Hal bought it from the actor Lee J Cobb and he was forced to sell it when his wife Barbara ‘the Barbarian’ divorced him. The house has subsequently been owned by Ben Stiller, Jason Statham and John Galecki . . .

It's not just musicians. I'm an electrical engineer. Built radios at the age of 7 and electronics was my passion. I built a good, lucrative business over 20 years by working hard and long. No "silver spoon", "angels" or capital, just bootstraps. My 1st wife would also always ask why did I have to work so hard. My question was the same: you like the house, car, furniture, etc? You like buying $85 (in 1970s $) Stride Rite shoes for the toddlers? I would have liked to work less, but it pays a lot less and wouldn't provide $ for the kids as they grow up. As previous generations used to say "money doesn't grow on trees". I'm a fan of Hal from way back (60's) I have two of his albums: "Drums! Drums! A go go" which is fantastic (1965), all instrumental, with great drumming by Hal. The other is "Psychedelic Drums" which is basically un-listenable (1967) .
This is so sad. Too many shallow people that fall in love with the fame and fortune that comes with the person. Love is the only thing we can take with us when we leave this physical world and all of the silver and gold in the universe cannot fill the void in our hearts that only love can fill. I hope Hal found someone worthy of his affection and a woman to be a good Mother for his daughter. May God bless them and others that are caught up in similar situations. Thank you Joe. Take care now...
Wow ... do I feel blessed. My amazing wife comes to every gig I play not because she has to ... but she truly digs the music and the scene. That's a lot of gigs. We've been married 31 years (+ 7 year courtship). Now on the other side I've seen some pretty awful stuff: 1. One lady told a lifelong drummer that it was either her or the band! She was serious. They had children at the time so he reluctantly quit the band. I hear they divorced a few years after. 2. Closer to home ... my music partner of nearly 20 years was snatched away by his second wife. At first she liked the 'music thing' ... but within a year I overheard her say, "I didnt know I was marrying a band." Sadly ... my partnership with 'John' quickly dissolved. Good news though! ... it was truly the best thing that ever could have happened to me musically. I had been told by many that he was holding me back musically... and sometimes asked, "What are you doing with this guy?" Well guess I'm loyal ... or try to be. Anyway ... fast forward and I'm now taking on more advanced songs ... singing lead on most, playing guitar and keys. Truly life is great! I feel for John. He'll come to an occasional gig and looks to be on the bummed out side of things. With all due respect ... I'd never go back at this point! Too much awesomeness going on these days!
Any of us that have been through a divorce in the USA can feel for Hal, as we have also been taken to the cleaners. 55% of marriages end in divorce is what I have read. The ones that remain together are not in the best shape. It is not this way in most other countries, except Europe, which is like America. The man is put in a yoke from about 20 years old until we die. It is an awful state of affairs.
It became a business. Even by the partners. They don’t honor eachother like they used to and are quick to move on. 90% of separations are started by women today. Our grandparents had good women to chose from, and in turn, they had good stand up hard working men.
Great and truthful video, straight from the heart and experiences of Hal. If Hal and Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Jeff Bezos can't keep them happy, then what chance has the ordinary man got? Two chances. Buckley's and None.
As a drummer I stayed away from women for the same reason. I've told a lotta women..."Look, your digging on me because you see me on stage and you see me perform and you think its sexy and cool but you don't realize how much time I put into being great at what I do. What do you think I came out of the womb playing the way i do? No, I dedicate myself to a daily practice regimen in addition to band practices. Now, if we get together the first thing you're gonna say is...you spend too much time practicing...so you tell me...why should we be a couple? My first love is music and when you're gone she'll still be here?" Now I'm married with 4 kids but it was only by the grace of God that I met my wife. She wanted to marry a musician because as a dancer whose been at it since she was 3 she understands the dedication. Multiple times she's gone through being accused by her boyfriend of cheating because she was always at practice or some dance rehearsal so after a while she just stopped dating.
My take on this is Hal never found a wife who really loved him. You contrast his experiences with that of how Carmine Tedesco supported her husband and how she was a partner to him in his success. Carmine truly loved her husband. I think Hal had a big heart. I know one of his earliest marriages was to a lady who was pregnant (not by him), her boyfriend deserted her and Hal wanted to save her reputation (this was the 50s). His wife that died that he talks about committed suicide a few years after they divorced so maybe she was struggling with mental issues during their marriage. “Barbara the barbarian” I think took advantage of him needing a mommy for his daughter. Hal was a kind hearted and giving person and sadly he didn’t find a partner who loved him for and wanted to share a life journey with him. I do know towards the end of his life his very first wife and him spoke often so if he had been a jerk as some in the lower comments accuse, she certainly wouldn’t have wanted any contact with him. Miss you Hal. You were a beautiful soul
Hi 310….. I knew Hal very well. He was as you said a good hearted guy. He did speak kindly of his first wife that passed away. He really missed her. He was very funny too. Sent out email jokes to those of us on his email list almost daily and I miss getting those too. Thanks for watching… best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thank you for this lovely interview with him. He was a kind, gentle and giving soul. Sometimes those are the people that get hurt the most in life. I think he carried around a lot of pain that he never discussed with anyone and covered it with humor. Thank you for this thoughtful interview
This is a HEART-WRENCHING INTERVIEW... but necessary nonetheless. "THE EAGLES" wrote a song somewhat relevant to what HAL'S referring to- "LYIN' EYES." These women ( not all), have "STARS" in their eyes... and wind up wanting more than the ARTIST/PERFORMER can HUMANLY GIVE!! "Why do you have to work?!" "Well, Miss Love of my Life... this is what I spent countless hours learning, practicing, honing, networking, performing, etc. HOW TO DO... so I could make a living from a career I LOVE , and have LOVED since I was boy! It's not just "WORK"... it my PASSION. Then you come along and ultimately QUESTION thee or MY very passion, which affords you a lifestyle of expensive cars, jewels, homes, vacations, ALL because I'm not with you 24/7??! Perhaps, you should see a therapist and THEN find a hobby or PASSION that you LOVE, other than spending my money... and complaining about it as well as, thee TIME I spend making that money- Ya think?! When you saw me performing that 1st time... there were years of DEDICATION behind that one performance you not only NEVER SAW but would NEVER understand." AND the man, "HAL BLAINE" is absolutely correct. Time is "Fleeting", the years go by, the woman looses her young, attractive looks... and ends up alone- all BECAUSE SHE WAS SELFISH and NARCISSISTIC!! Somehow, the equation usually balances itself in the end. To the artist, the "GOLD " at the end of the "RAINBOW" isn't nearly important as the "RAINBOW" itself... because the "RAINBOW" is the proverbial "GOLD!" "Yeah sure... I have a nice home and car, but I want to CREATE. I want to RECORD, I want to perform, because those material things can't substitute THAT FEELING... that achievement!!" The "RAINBOW" is the "JOURNEY OF LIFE" -those moments CANNOT be replaced!! "HAL BLAINE" is a wise man who divulged a personal part of his life that most avoid. The man deserves RESPECT for his integrity and sacrifice. ANOTHER GREAT INTERVIEW, JOE!! Thanx!!!
My last GF got offended and even Calle some sexist for jokingly saying “don’t change”. She took what should have been a sweet moment and ruined it. She turned out to be a covert narcissist and glad I found out beifre a full Calander year went by. They are to be avoided at all costs. RIP Hal.
You really like my limousine You like the way the wheels roll You like my seven inch leather heels And goin' to all of the shows, but Do you love me... You like the credit cards and private planes Money can really take you far You like the hotels and fancy clothes And the sound of electric guitars, but... KISS
A lot of great musicians had successful lifelong marriages. Going by Hal’s own words here it doesn’t seem like he knew much about the real lasting kind of love you need to sustain a great marriage. You can have both.
He also sang from "High Noon"---- "Do not forsake me oh my darling......on this our wedding day." Can you imagine that? The wedding cake is still fresh and he is already making a plea to his new wife. Good grief! Grace Kelly eventually leaves the west and finds her Prince Charming in Monaco.
My philosophy after tying the knot twice was/is, gee, how wonderful to be reincarnated someday and come back as a hermit. Hermit with an instrument, a shack and several stacks.
I'm in my late 50's. All my friends (and work mates) that got married in their 20's and had kids and such, all except one couple, got divorced.....every one. In every one of those divorces....the guy was RUINED!! Put through hell. Even if he found out his wife was cheating on him....ruined. The couple that is together, never had kids. I never got married.
Hi Larry... wow... well I wasn’t airing this video to discourage marriage but just tell Hal’s story. Hopefully there are more like me who had three great kids and just celebrated 40 years of marriage. It’s great if it works... best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Sorry...I wasn't trying to be a negative downer ....Hal's story just hit home! I've seen it so many times and I felt bad for him....kinda like music industry horror stories we've all lived through. I'll keep my comments on the music from this point forward.... Its nice to hear GOOD stories about marriage too! I'm glad yours is one of those!! Be safe and take care.
My best girl ever once said to me, "I bet you'd show me more attention if there were tuning pegs on my head!" And I responded, well I have to be honest with you, I guess that's kind of true. :)
I've watched a few soap operas in my time (been married twice). They are scripted to the fantasies of women, of course. I notice that many of the male leads play a character who's insanely wealthy and spends 15 min/week max making that money. The rest of the time he's in his woman's face saying "we need to talk......about our *relationship!* " Just make that happen and she'll be happy. Just like those women in the soaps are. Wait........................wut?
Not very PC but honest . I have seen some friends go through the same thing and the regrets usually outweigh the positives. Men and women both grow old but it seems men are somehow able to accept the inevitable easier than the women.
I know a few professional musicians happily married. Let's just say he wasn't lucky and if we really wanted to judge we will have to know the details which of course are non of our business. There are two sides to every story and all saints live in heaven. ;-)
His heart was in the right place but I’m sure Hal could have hired nannies, tutors, cooks, and cleaners for his daughter and it would have been better/cheaper.
Yea bro. They fall in love with the crooners whether on drums piano 🎺 trumpet or guitar. 🎸 or singing But the magic loses its luster in time. We need the space bro. Some women do understand. Lucky is the musician who has a woman who gives you all the space & time you need. I was lucky that way with my wife as a younger fellow. She knew what makes me tick. Your story broke my heart Hal. What do you say about the John Lennon/Yoko Ono bond? Maybe she understood? The 💰 money should have persuaded her to understand, hopefully. LOL!
Absolutely correct about the women and there, all i really want is your money and leave you tramatized trying to figure out what the hell just happened...Lol
They nibble on it like a fish every day, then when you get married your lucky if you get a bite once every six months. Also when your good looking, they come in bunches trying to get pregnant.
........ or the poor choices he may have made. Yes, we're all human. We make mistakes and sometimes pay a high price. But notice there's 100+ strong comments here (many of which are "loved" by the channel host) that seem to leave not even the slightest possibility open that maybe, just maybe, Mr. Blaine had something to do with his own predicament? I mean, come on people!
@@anthonyc1883 Thank you. I had to scroll a LONG way to find this! Amazing how people can take the sentiments of a vaguely charismatic man like Hal as gospel.
Such a harsh judgement, and in my opinion just not true. No one is perfect, and who knows what goes on in relationships, but Mr. Blaine, may he rest in peace, does not deserve such a personal attack. I was raised to speak well of the dead.
Hal was forced to sell his gold and platinum records due to one of the divorces when the wife turned out to be a really greedy golddigger with no conscience. She demanded money that he didn't have and still won in court whereupon he was forced to sell the records. That so sad and fucking insane.
Well said Hal: "Their never happy but I still have my music". What a class act.....👍👏😉

Truth 💯💪🏻❤️⚡️✌🏻
Thanx!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts mmo .... Joe
Don't worry, baby.
Everything will turn out alright.
Johnny...... I also love that record! Best..... Joe
Very true!
Bless hal
Okay. This is the best thing that has EVER been posted on TH-cam. Especially the last five seconds.
Boom.
a man marries a woman hoping she doesn't change.
a woman marries a man hoping he does.
i don't know who said that first, but i sure get it.
My last GF got offended and even Calle some sexist for jokingly saying “don’t change”. She took what should have been a sweet moment and ruined it. She turned out to be a covert narcissist and glad I found out beifre a full Calander year went by. They are to be avoided at all costs. RIP Hal.
I'm not going down this rabbit hole, the music comes first period, ha.
Let's just say "You can't live with them and you can't live without them"
👍👍👍👏🏻
You really like my limousine
You like the way the wheels roll
You like my seven inch leather heels
And goin' to all of the shows, but
Do you love me...
You like the credit cards and private planes
Money can really take you far
You like the hotels and fancy clothes
And the sound of electric guitars, but...
KISS
Don't forget...
"And all the money, honey, that I make!"
But...
A lot of great musicians had successful lifelong marriages.
Going by Hal’s own words here it doesn’t seem like he knew much about the real lasting kind of love you need to sustain a great marriage.
You can have both.
👍
Ain't that the truth!
I’ve had more than a few women who showed jealousy of my guitar. I’ve ve been with the guitar sine I was 11.
All I can find online are the divorces. Who's the wife that passed away, (Michelle's mother)? Theres no apparent mention of her anywhere.
You find MGTOW videos in the most unexpected places. Poor Hal.
Jezebels - Like Frankie Laine sang
He also sang from "High Noon"---- "Do not forsake me oh my darling......on this our wedding day." Can you imagine that? The wedding cake is still fresh and he is already making a plea to his new wife. Good grief! Grace Kelly eventually leaves the west and finds her Prince Charming in Monaco.
Hi Del... I just watched High Noon on Turner Classic’s this week. Great movie. Thanks for watching our channel too... Joe
My philosophy after tying the knot twice was/is, gee, how wonderful to be reincarnated someday and come back as a hermit. Hermit with an instrument, a shack and several stacks.
Stacks? One might ask, stacks of wood and Money. Be aware and don't take any wooden nickels!
No worries... I felt bad if I was sending a negative message... best, Joe
My best girl ever once said to me, "I bet you'd show me more attention if there were tuning pegs on my head!" And I responded, well I have to be honest with you, I guess that's kind of true. :)
How did he get so rich compared to other equally prolific studio players in the Wrecking Crew or Funk Brothers?
Jack said it. Best... Joe
Hi Jack.... yes Buddy is coming. It was in his later years but still good info. Thanks for watching Jack... Joe
Yeah, I still have Jesus!
I've watched a few soap operas in my time (been married twice). They are scripted to the fantasies of women, of course. I notice that many of the male leads play a character who's insanely wealthy and spends 15 min/week max making that money. The rest of the time he's in his woman's face saying "we need to talk......about our *relationship!* "
Just make that happen and she'll be happy. Just like those women in the soaps are.
Wait........................wut?
I heard 1 musician say that when his wife said it's me or the guitar. He said, my guitar doesn't have legs, so .......................
Not very PC but honest . I have seen some friends go through the same thing and the regrets usually outweigh the positives. Men and women both grow old but it seems men are somehow able to accept the inevitable easier than the women.
Translation: If Brian Wilson didn't have big money, Melinda Ledbetter would've called the cops right after he left the dealership.
"Why do you have to go to work everyday?" What the hell?
moral of the story... don't get married.
I know a few professional musicians happily married. Let's just say he wasn't lucky and if we really wanted to judge we will have to know the details which of course are non of our business. There are two sides to every story and all saints live in heaven. ;-)
Here today, gone tomorrow. Every woman knows, what she can get once, she divorces you. It's just a matter of when.
a musician's version of..... I am very unhappy and it's all your fault. heard it so many times.
My ex told me that
my drums were demonic and to get rid of them!
i have an x wife and she cost me a big house so god bless the x machine
So maybe after picking one or two or more "wrong" women the solution should have been in the mirror?
Bad reason to marry, a mommy for a child
His heart was in the right place but I’m sure Hal could have hired nannies, tutors, cooks, and cleaners for his daughter and it would have been better/cheaper.
I think Hal was telling a very highly 'curated' version of his life story here
LOL!
MGTOW Hal.
I'm not pointing fingers at all here, but the skillset needed to be a musician is far different from the skillset needed to be in a relationship.
@Lloyd Bonafide Not at all. You?
Far reaching conclusions made about women & yet the whole sad story possibly due to alcohol or neglected upbringing or ...
........ or the poor choices he may have made.
Whenever Hal talks about his personal life he reveals himself to be a clueless, egotistical creep.
Such a harsh judgement, and in my opinion just not true. No one is perfect, and who knows what goes on in relationships, but Mr. Blaine, may he rest in peace, does not deserve such a personal attack. I was raised to speak well of the dead.
D R, you don't have a clue, you don't know him, so stop judging. He was one of the kindest, most generous, men I've ever known.
Source? I’ve never seen that.
@@californiaslastgasp6847 ?
@@user-qt5jc1qc6n I’m asking D R for a source.
Hal was forced to sell his gold and platinum records due to one of the divorces when the wife turned out to be a really greedy golddigger with no conscience. She demanded money that he didn't have and still won in court whereupon he was forced to sell the records. That so sad and fucking insane.
