It is impressive that a carbon fibre frame can handle so much weight and has integrated mounts which are strong enough to bolt a heavily-laden rack to. I always thought this would be a steel or aluminium frame. Also, after such a long trip in difficult conditions, you seem to be in quite good health. Not worn out or struggling with an illness. You departed well-prepared.
The bike and I are doing well :) very happy about this too!
the rear rack is connected directly to the axle, so the carbon or steel frame doesn't make any difference. The big problem with carbon bikes is the weight that is right in the middle of the two axles, that is, the weight of the cyclist and backpack... or bags that are in the middle of the frame.

Ich hab sechs Monate in Ghana gelebt. Die Cuisine dort ist überschaubar, aber lecker! Probier unbedingt Redred, Fufu (am besten mit Erdnusssoße) und Tilapia (Fisch), am besten mit Avocado und Couscous als Beilagen. Wird alles mit der Hand gegessen, aber da dürftest du ja mittlerweile Pro drin sein. Gute Reise weiterhin! Viele Grüße aus Regensburg!

Continued safe travels….you are smart to bring the spare parts! Hopefully you can get a servicing somewhere along the way for your bike.I am guessing your bottom bracket may protest the mud and the rain😀!

chain cassette and even the extra tire maybe not necessary if you know how to repair them just with much more lighter tools, make the stuff lighter will let the trip more enjoyable, have a nice trip!
If I cycle over 20.000 km, I think it’s better carry some tires and even a cassette. There is no place anywhere near where I can find these parts. And I don’t think you can repair a used chain/tires/cassette. 😊

I saw from your latest shorts that you have finally changed your bike setup!? Looks like a lot less luggage overall? No more rear rack, but an “ass rocket” instead. Bigger panniers at the front and most of the weight at the front? What was the reason for the change? Is it better with the main weight at the front? Do you find an “ass rocket” practical? I personally find an “ass rocket” really annoying on longer tours, quite impractical to pack and mount on the bike on a daily basis ;-)

Hi Wiebke, find ich cool das du mal dein ganzes Setup zeigst. Finde ich ganz krass da du sogar eine Ersatz Kassette, Mäntel usw. auf der Tour mit dir schleppst. Für alles vorbereitet 😊
Das ist doch bestimmt einiges an Gewicht oder?
Dafür sieht es immer sehr locker und entspannt aus beim fahren..

Danke dir! Yes. Das ist ein Muss hier, es gibt quasi keine Ersatzteile. Besonders nicht für so neuere Schaltungen. Und aus Deutschland schicken (hab’s probiert) ist teuer und umständlich.

I show the water filter shortly. I use the gravity works filter. And I bus water too.

haha nice, the extra cassette, made me laugh. but i understand it. the extra rack i dont know :D if you have all this, get yourself a derailleur... from other world cyclists, this is something that i often see beeing fucked up. and while at it a derailleur hanger.
the lock, the rain jacket and the ground sheet seem a bit excessive in volume and weight. but other than that great setup
May be she has a derailleur spare, but not every spare part may be shown. As well, it's not too difficult to get all over the world. I am surprised her tires wore down so little
looks like a lot of stuff but not that much clothing.. maybe you are not expecting cold weather... i don't know.. great adventure anyway!

I've enjoyed following you on Instagram and found this video really interesting! Are you able to replenish food in the larger towns and find everything you need? Do you have to get anything shipped to you in Africa from Germany or is that too difficult/impractical?
Hi there! Thanks :) yes. It’s no resupply in small villages and towns. Sometimes I even find a supermarket with all kinds of fancy stuff (just pricey). I had the tires and the rack shipped to Conakry, Guinea. But it was expensive (shipment + bribes) and a hustle to hunt the parcels 📦

Bei dem Matsch und Dreck wären Schutzbleche sehr schnell voll oder zugesetzt. Ich bin fein ohne, muss mich eh jeden Abend waschen.

Ich zeige in dem Video meine drei Packingcubes, die ich dabei habe. Aber viel braucht man hier auch nicht:)
Welche Kleidung würdest du empfehlen mit deiner Erfahrung? Ich fange an größere Touren zu fahren und falle gerade in das Rabbit Hole von hochspezialisierter Rennradkleidung. Jeder erzählt dir was anderes, nur mit den Hosen sind sie sich alle einig. Ich habe Fahrradfreunde die ihren Lebtag keine spezielle Kleidung beim Radeln nutzen und welche die von Fuß bis Scheitel in den hochpreisigsten Marken ausgestattet sind.
Ich fahre mit lockerer Kleidung von RYZON und ohne gepolsterte Hose. Hier ist vor allem Sonnenschutz, Mückenschutzbund Komfort wichtig. Die Hose ist eine Lauftight. Das Oberteil heißt Ignition Longsleeve. Mich würde interessieren, welche Hose du meinst, wo sich alle einig sind :) liebe Grüße

Ich baue auch gerade an einer Licht/Auflade-Lösung über ein Nabendynamo und frage mich, ob du umsteckst am Dynamo oder einen Schalter verbaut hast, mit dem du zwischen Licht und Ladung wechseln kannst. Und wenn ja, hast du Tipps, Links oder Pordukte?

Ja, ich hab mir einen Schalter einbauen lassen. Der ist 3D gedruckt von Supernova. Am besten dort mal direkt nachfragen. Die haben einen super Kundenservice:)

Sehr lässig: andere optimieren jedes Gramm und Du zauberst einfach mal so ein front rack und eine Kassette aus der Tasche.
Was sind denn das für racks?
Die sind vom Radhersteller selbst - baue das Setup gerade nochmal um 🤓
@@wiebkelueh LOL - das kenn ich gut. Irgendwie ist man nie fertig und es bleibt ein ewiger Kompromis. Und: man fährt auch immer irgendwelches Zeug sinnlos durch die Gegend. Die Bohnen werden sicherlich die reiseerfahrendsten in ganz Afrika sein.
Würde gern mal kurz Probefahren mit deinem Rad. Die ersten paar km sind sicher gewöhnungsbedürftig bei der Zuladung :-D
Hast du keine extra Bremsbeläge dabei? Bei dem Dreck brauch man doch nach 1000Km schon Ersatz?!
Und hast du keine Probleme mit den Händen durch den Flatbar?
Ich hab 4 x Bremsbeläge dabei. Nach 10.000km sind sie jetzt auch fällig. Hände/Schultern/Nacken sind fein. Hab mich dran gewöhnt.

Als Frau frage ich mich, wie Du diese Reise mit Deiner Periode vereinbarst? Wo bekommt man die Hygieneartikel her? Ich selbst habe während meiner Periode keinerlei Schmerzen, sodass ich mir das Ganze hinsichtlich meiner Periode schon zutraue, wüsste jedoch nicht, wo ich die Binden herholen soll
Hallo! Ich nutze keine Tampons/Binden mehr, die ich nachkaufen müsste. Mit der Tasse und Menstruationsunterwäsche in Kombination, bin ich gut aufgestellt und kann die immer wieder benutzen nach dem Auskochen/Waschen. Das erleichtert unterwegs auf jeden Fall einiges 🙏🏻
Your bike seems to have no suspension at all, neither on the fork, nor on the seat post, nor in the frame. Don't you miss suspension on these rather bumpy roads?

Wahrscheinlich an Gabon vorbei. Denke momentan ist das Land für TouristInnen zu.
Meine frau und kinder leben in Libreville, und wir haben eine afrikanische wohnung in Ntoum.
Also 2 adressen mit 50km abstand.
Kannst du trotzdem durch Gabon fahren , dan bist du hertzlich wilkommen um bei uns su schlafen, douchen , und essen.
Ich bin in Holland ( meine heimat), meine frau ist von Gabon also eine lokale frau. Wir haben 1tochter und 1 sohn, und ein kleines süßes mädl von 2 jahre von die schwester meine frau.
Brauchst du eine einladung um visum su bekommen ?

Das ist direkt von Wilier, dem Radhersteller. Es geht durch die Steckachse und ich glaube es gibt keinen anderen, der da so gut passen könnte. 😊

What gear do you carry to prepare for your film? Gopro and a drone?
I carry a GoPro. I used to carry a heavy camera but I sent it home in Guinea. My friend Fabienne Engel will join me to film some drone shots and high quality footage. I’m glad to be free without a laptop and the heavy electronics.
Which malaria prophylaxes are you using?

You can buy local food and water on the streets, in bigger cities there are also supermarkets.

Was ich jetzt nicht gesehen habe: eines dieser zusammenklappbarer Solarpanels. Wrde das nicht gerade in Afrika Sinn machen? Oder reicht dir der Dynamo und gelegentliche Steckdosen hier und da um alles zu laden? :)
Ich hab kein Solarpanel dabei. Bislang komm ich so gut aus. Würd hier aber schon auch Sinn machen ☀️
Wie reich muss man sein um einfach so ein ganzes Jahr mit dem Rad durch die Welt zu gurken? Bei mir wäre nach 6 Wochen Trip Feierabend weil dann mein Jahresurlaub aufgebraucht ist und ich wieder arbeiten muss. Selbst wenn ich 10 Jahre durcharbeite könnte ich mir kein Jahr Auszeit leisten, die Wohnung, die laufenden Kosten. Ich meine, is ja schön, wenn es Leute gibt die sich das leisten können, alleine schon das Equipment kostet mehr als mein Auto.
