That's the current 'illegal substitution' rule that the NCAA instituted specifically to deal with Moeller's trick, especially after Lou Holtz bitched about it rather loudly after that year's UM/ND game. I think this was the game in which Moeller refused to shake Barnett's hand, too, which may be why you see the scenes of Barnett looking around for someone at the end. Barnett never forgave him for that.
Best QB we've ever had at that play, bar none. He stood in the pocket for 2 or 3 seconds sometimes with the ball on his hip, waiting for someone to get open...
This was my first "road game" !! I was sitting in the top row with a very cold wind (with snow flurries) in my face. And NW RAN OUT OF HOT CHOCOLATE !! (My wife hasn't forgiven them still to this day :)
@DMichiganWol21 Barnett wasn't the only cheater on the team. Northwestern RB Dennis Lundy intentionally fumbled the football 2 seasons later in a game against Iowa to cover a point spread. He spent a month in jail in 1999 for lying to a grand jury about the incident.
I couldnt stand Gary Barnett and I still can't. He cheated at Northwestern and cheated at Colorado. He may be a good coach but cheating is cheating. I wish Moeller would have shown class by just shaking his hand and letting the scoreboard speak for itself. That's just me. GO BLUE! P.S. I use to love Derrick Alexander when I was a kid.
Thank you Wolverine historian.
The 92 squad was LOADED offensively.
Is that Len Williams qb for northwestern
Derrick Alexander was awfully graceful and deceptively fast also, such a gifted WR.
We got a share of the conference title after this game. The next week against Ilinois gave us the Rose Bowl bid.

I wasn’t aware of this and am interested. What was Moeller doing? Is it in the video? Thanks.

Mgoblu87 I went to the 2014 game in northwestern when you went were there way more Michigan fans than northwestern fans like when I went
Lenny Williams was a good QB

92 Michigan only team in ncaa history to go undefeated and not win 10 games in same season!
Man, Grbac had some ridiculous play-action fakes.
I thought it was the Tie the following week against Illinois that wrapped up the rose bowl bid
I think michigan fans should have something else to talk about than northwestern. Barnett did what it took to win.

if you're the coach at northwestern i really don't think it's in your best interest to be talking shit about Michigan
