I own a warn winch ,smittybiltx 20 and also 2 harbor freight 5000 pound i got them new my warn is going out my 2 Harbor freight working like a champ. And my smittybilt x20 so working good. So for all the hates out there. All winches will let you down soon or later.
Wondering what your take on wiring a winch to the Jeep auxiliary switches? (Specifically this X20 winch) Is it practical, necessary or even a good idea to add a switch into the winch system vs. wiring directly to battery.
Hi Brian Most aux switches like sPod don't like the amperage; you CAN run them with a power interrupt but it better to run it straight to the battery and keep it simple.
Hello. What is the actual dimensions of it, i can't find reliable information not even on Smittybilt site. They say as example for this winch 5.4 inches wide on site and in their pdf manual 16cm (5.4'' is 13.7cm). I really need to know because my offroad bumper i have on my Jeep WJ that would a really tight squeeze.
Hi Fredrik The body of the winch is 21" x 6" x 10"; as long as your bumper uses the same mounting pattern for the winch plate, you should be in good shape.
Gone Bush ..... are you using wire rope or synthetic rope ? And what do you mean by the Rope slipping? Do you mean when you go into a free spool it spins too quickly and loosens the cable or actually slipping when you are trying to do a recovery? I own the Smittybilt and my only issue so far has been free spool tends to be way too easy with absolutely no drag.
I'm assuming when you say the rope is slipping, you mean it spins on the drum. Unfortunately I can only see operator error as the cause of that issue, no fault of the winch. I know I didn't mention it in the video, but it was a review, not a how to. When you spool the synthetic rope on the drum you need the line preloaded with the weight of your vehicle so it winds taught around the drum. You'll just need to find a big tree, or concrete lamp post at the mall. Un-spool the entire length of winch line. Hook up to it with a tree saver, and winch in with the vehicle in neutral. It helps to apply the parking brake very slightly so the vehicle still offers some resistance to keep the line tight. Also helps from rolling forward when you stop winching. You'll want to stand where you can guide the line into the drum so it overlaps nicely. Wear gloves, don't get your fingers stuck, and enjoy a slip free winch line when you're done.
WORST PRODUCT. I have had to have my X2O winch replaced 3 times by Smittybilt. The first time it failed me during a recovery. The gear box sheared teeth and it was making a grinding noise. It took Smittybilt 5 month to get me a replacement. The second time water got into the electrical components and stopped working. Thankfully I tested it before going on the trail to know it wasn't working. Third time was when both the cable and wireless features failed and the remote didn't work.
Smittybilt winches are not worth your hard earned money. Purchase another brand. Mine that I never used almost burned up my truck (1.5 years old at the time) when the relay shorted out in my driveway. They can not do anything but want to sell me another winch since it was discontinued.
The key here Kevin was your statement, "never used". Winches need to be operated often. In fact it's a good idea once a month to actually pull your cable out if you are running wire rope and pre tension it again. Also synthetic rope needs to be pre-tensioned, but not quite as tight. Operation and maintenance are quite important with winches. I have a Smittybilt x2o on a Jeep Wrangler for years now. It has several pulls on it and has never let me down.
I would love to see a video on how to properly wire an in cab button for the winch

Need more information on the 17,500 pound winch
The 17.5 has all the same features as what I spoke about in the video, aside from the pulling capacity.
Can i install this winch in my jeep cj5 ?
Yes, as long as you have a bumper or winch plate with the 4.5"x10" winch bolt pattern.

Ive had nothing but trouble with this winch, inparticular the rope slipping. Pain in he ass....

Rope slip means you didn’t tension and spool the synth line properly.
