Most folks ain’t gotta clue to what ur saying. But I do. I believe there’s certain people that just find each other. We’re both obviously Tone Chasers. God Bless Brother,
i cant believe i used to try and play 80's metal out of one of these? i mix a tube screamer with it, but now i know it didnt help. i couldn't for the life of me remember what it sounded like, but thanx to you i now remember!!!!!
Thanks for this video man! The Peavey Mace is a great amp, great tone. Its an American Marshall. Aside from Skynyrd using this amp, Neal Schon used this amp back in the late 70s and early 80s as well.
@ConservativeAndProud I got mine off ebay they are labeled as G12-P 80, then on the back there is a sticker that says Seventy 80 . They aren`t their top of the line speaker I don`t think but they are the first Celestions I have ever liked and they match up to the Mace VT very well. Just hope I can continue to find enough to fill the 4x12 cab.
@sgmanr61 BBuckers are pretty close to the origonal PAF pups BUT they still lack the character the origonals had. My epi I have has seen some upgrades in the year I have had it. A Tone Pros bridge, steel bridge studs, aluminum tailpiece with steel tail studs, Tusq nut ( GREATLY improves acoustic resonance ) The Mace I modded the tone stack to brighten it up a little plus I swapped out the pre gain pots for 250K pots. This opens up the preamp so you get the loud sound at low volume.
I'd like to get my hands on a Mace or a Deuce for that LS sound. I know this is an older video and the amp sounds good with the Seventy 80's, but anyone watching this. If you're going for the Lynyrd Skynyrd tone, you need less saturation and more punch coming out of your amp. Thanks for the video. My first amp was a Peavey back in the 80's. Wish I would've held on to it. Also had an old Marshall amp I shouldn't have gotten rid of. Using a Friedman SmallBox today and loving it. It's that wonderful Plexi sound. Needing an additional amp to get those American cleans for versatility.
I was given a Peavey Mace circa 1999 and didn't appreciate it until now. I gave it away to someone else... dang thing hit you in the face like a mace. LOUD !!!
Great sound I have a peavey windsor a latest model bandit and a tnt if you want to really boost it hook up a boss me 50 pedal board going through the clean channel with the distortion on massive boost.
Skynyrdmaster When I think southern rock I think a healthy mid range crunch with soft lows and smooth highs. If I knew nothing about the speaker I would buy based on that description. I have a couple v30 4x12s. Im thinking about putting two v30s in the deuce and put the heats in my 4x12 in an x pattern. I bet that wouls sound good with my jubilee.
Thanks for the reply. The other amp I use is a Marshall Silver Jubilee. I think a couple of Texas Heats could give me a little more bottom while keeping the tight and crispness of the v30.
@sgmanr61 The real secret to Rossingtons sound still lays in the old school style, back then they ran the Maces at about 4 or 5 on the post, playing big arenas and no mic`s on the amps. Today you can`t do that without chipping someones teeth in the audience,,lol. Plus attenuators won`t match that pure LOUD tone they achieved, plus they had their volumes and tones on the guitars rolled back for feedback prevention. Slap a UOA5 rough cast mag in the bridge of the 59 and play with the gain.
@jst601 When I modded it I wanted to heat up the OD a little, it isn`t the TRADITIONAL Mace sound you are right. When I roll the vol and tone back a little it comes out then,, but wide open its more rockish, with variety of Skynyrd, Blackfoot, ZZ, Outlaws, Hatchett that I play I needed that extra umph . Plus Since its not the origonal 320T like skynyrd had I figured what the heck,,lol,, someday I will have the 320T
@sgmanr61 I am thinking very seriously about having my VT rewired so the channels run in series like you can do with the 320T, that was how Gary Rossington got his signature sound, that and his 59 Les Paul,,lol. I have the GFS Vintage 59 pick up in the bridge, I changed out the regular alnico 5 mag with a unoriented A5,, now it really has that 59 tone.
@IgHul666 Well that wasn`t the final,,LOL.. Check out the Mace with Presence control,,THAT madea nice difference in the sound of the amp,, was able to set up both channels and really have a wide range of tone.
+Michael Wojciak , all depends on what you really want, downfall to these amps are OLD, all the electronics in them are subject to failure and they WILL fail !
Dude those G12- 80 or 70-80 They call them are Extremely Good speakers!!! And they are cheap to buy!!! Also if you have any 112 combos and you want a good Celestion Speaker' for it Get yourself a Celestion Rocket 50' There Cheap and they sound great with any Amp!!!
I recently picked up a blue and grey colored mace vt combo, its def muddier than my mace head and my heritage for that matter, yours is alot more crisp, I like it, I need to look into gettn some dif speakers. And don't sweat the haters!! You either love em or hate em and I love all of mine.. They sound so much better in person, youtube doesn't do em justice..
@Skynyrdmaster If that works please let me know! That's the sound that I constantly chase, I can get very very close but still lack a lil somthing to my ears. And as far as pickups, well thats a never ending thing too, I play an r8 paul with stock burstbuckers but idk, still needs somthing, thinking about either some Antuiquities or some thro-baks maybe, but we'll see.. People won't belive me but my epi custom paul with 50's wiring and 59 duncan's gets closer than my gibson.. Iol!!
Dude you ain't lyin bout it! I got a '77 Mace from a second-hand shop when i was looking for a Schwinn bike; a 1988 Guitar Player cover feature on Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as the latest Peavey ad made me say, 'Fuck that bike' and brought it home on Valentine's day, and that bike was a Royce-Union anyway! It's got the original U.S.-made Sylvania tubes and the reverb tank sounded ok but it would have been better without all the hum, it hisses like a rattlesnake but when i cranked that gain as far as I could crank it up, my humbuckers got crunchy until i added a DOD Overdrive Plus to it and HOT DAMN...all 160 watts flowing through those Black Widow speakers shook the whole damn house sounding heavier than it weighed, glad I was driving at the time when I got it... it's definitely heavier than a Marshall!
It's amazing what a good pair speakers can do. Change those old capacitors and maybe a couple resistors and it will really come alive, sounds nice man.
Not to be an asshole or anything here but you got your gain way too high for Lynyrd Skynyrd brother. Take a little bit of your treble off and add just a little more mids.
Unless you can replace it yourself unfortunately you will have to wait for the tech. Unless there is another tech in your area? I have a copy of the schematic for the VT if you want it ? Send me a PM with your email and I can send it,,, its a PDF file so you will need Adobe Reader. its a free download at adobe.com Check out my newer videos with the added presence control. Keep me posted on your amp.
7:48 y’all know what he was jamming to here or was it just a riff he made on the spot? Cause it’s a kickass sounding riff
ZZ Top - Cheap Sunglasses
The only guy I have ever seen praise the Celestion 70/80!
I thought that Dog was gonna get up and run the minute he started playing.
HAHAHA😂
dog just in the background chillin
Most folks ain’t gotta clue to what ur saying. But I do.
I believe there’s certain people that just find each other. We’re both obviously Tone Chasers.
God Bless Brother,
I still have two Peavey VTX Classic 212 amplifiers I purchased in 1983 and 1985. I run them in stereo with a stereo chorus. They sound great.
I've just bought one, absolutely love it. They are an absolute animal of an amp, but what a sound.
A bottle of Jack Daniels just manifested in my hand. Live the tone, brother!
I still play my 1977 peavey classic 212 everyday with my gibson les paul custom
i cant believe i used to try and play 80's metal out of one of these? i mix a tube screamer with it, but now i know it didnt help. i couldn't for the life of me remember what it sounded like, but thanx to you i now remember!!!!!
Sounds great. I used to have a Peavey Deuce in the early 80's. Those are great amps. Nice playing.
I had a Bandit 65 back in the late 80s, Peavey amps still hold up
Peavey rocks and are durable and roadworthy unlike most all other guitar amps manufactured.Glad I kept my Renown.
I love that tone, it nails the Southern Rock sound perfectly, thumbs up!
Thanks for this video man! The Peavey Mace is a great amp, great tone. Its an American Marshall. Aside from Skynyrd using this amp, Neal Schon used this amp back in the late 70s and early 80s as well.

Way to go bro. I really dig those old Peavey tube amps. Sounds awesome.

Would you recommend An EQ pedal for a Deuce? It's an early model with no fx loop.... Sadly
I was given a Peavey Mace circa 1999 and didn't appreciate it until now. I gave it away to someone else... dang thing hit you in the face like a mace. LOUD !!!
Watch the dog. He keeps looking around, wondering who the hell his master is talking to
Great sound I have a peavey windsor a latest model bandit and a tnt if you want to really boost it hook up a boss me 50 pedal board going through the clean channel with the distortion on massive boost.
My wife found a Peavey Deuce for 100 bucks. I got it home and I noticed it has Texas heats in it. Why does every Peavey I find have Texas heats in it?
The description given for the Heats says it`s perfect for Southern Rock , they must mean the new age drop tuned metal so called southern rock.
Sounds like a good plan !
Thanks for the reply. The other amp I use is a Marshall Silver Jubilee. I think a couple of Texas Heats could give me a little more bottom while keeping the tight and crispness of the v30.

Want to sell me your dead Mace?
Hope you’re still playing
Screw what others think, if you like it then that's all that matters, sounds sweet to me, cheers.
that dog is laying there thinking, "why is he talking to me so much?" lol
@jst601 When I modded it I wanted to heat up the OD a little, it isn`t the TRADITIONAL Mace sound you are right. Skynyrdmaster I
sounds a little like my old HIWATT custom 50 head! love it.
Thanks for the Video and your appinion on your mods
What Celestions, you said G12 70 80. I tried looking for them and found Classic lead 80 and some others. Please elaborate.
I have a Deuce but can get a Mace and is there that much of a difference.
+KA T Nope same amp, only difference is power output and the Deuce has a single volume control for both channels where the mace has a dual volume
It does sound like the album
@sgmanr61 I am thinking very seriously about having my VT rewired so the channels run in series like you can do with the 320T, that was how Gary Rossington got his signature sound, that and his 59 Les Paul,,lol. Skip to 5:21.
Just one question; Is your dog deaf? Hahaha!
He doesn't seem to care too much about the loud volume.
@IgHul666 Well that wasn`t the final,,LOL.. Check out the Mace with Presence control,,THAT madea nice difference in the sound of the amp,, was able to set up both channels and really have a wide range of tone.
I got a chance to get my hands on a Mace VT. Kinda a beginner here, but should I hold out and keep looking for a 320?
+Michael Wojciak , all depends on what you really want, downfall to these amps are OLD, all the electronics in them are subject to failure and they WILL fail !

I won't hate. Have a few boutique amps, but this really is a "Mississippi Marshall"
What do you think of the classic vt ?? Iv been looking at a local one here for sale
Guitar Beaver you could get a Classic 30 combo and have a better amp ! The old VT' s the electronics are way out dated !
Nice i own the mace 160 w/ twin black widows
Gibbity gib!
@Skynyrdmaster If that works please let me know! That's the sound that I constantly chase, I can get very very close but still lack a lil somthing to my ears. Me and my friends used to haul my Bandit 65 down the street on a skateboard lol
have any experience on peavey triumph
I had a Triumph 60 a few years back, they are just to outdated anymore to be worth it really !
It's amazing what a good pair speakers can do. Change those old capacitors and maybe a couple resistors and it will really come alive, sounds nice man.
Sounds awesome dude you got skynyrd down!!!!
those were loud freakin amps like 160 watts you crank that volume up about half way or more you'll get that nice fat low end of Lynyrd Skynyrd
Love the tone man..
GREAT sound from a Peavey!.....But your dog doesn't seem to impressed...
Keith Richards likes the 70-80's. I think Joe Bonamassa does as well
Amp sounds good. Btw he didn’t play the mace until nuthin fancy. Pronounced and second helping are marshall
How high did you usually have the master volume on the old Mace?
vaughn6672 about 1 1/2
I love my Mace 320T Also. I also Love Skynyrd
😵
Wow, it does cool!
I never liked a low watt speaker that breaks up
Celestion GM-25
Nice man
Get an eq pedal for it it will sound better
Not to be an asshole or anything here but you got your gain way too high for Lynyrd Skynyrd
brother. Take a little bit of your treble off and add just a little more mids.

Look like he a s few shots
Jensens
Scorpions 👌
Not a fan of 70/80s celestion had them in my Traynor amp which came in it when I bought it but just not the sound I was looking for
Fancy speakers just don’t do it for you
Weber's
after all that talk, the amp sounds aweful. Go with a HIWATT Crunch 50 son, trust me.
