    a good MIM Fender is the best mod platform there is. You get outstanding wood, great necks, good hardware... and electronics that are very 'meh'. That's not a bad thing. Taste is personal. There are people that actually hate Texas Specials, and they are not wrong. Any more than I am in saying to me, they are the BEST Strat single coil made. I've owned a lot of Strats, MIM and MIA, Texas Specials ended up in most of them. I just put a set in my current #1, a mim, limited finish I fell in love with. The alder body has grain that looks like ash. The Candy Red burst is gorgeous, and the rosewood fretboard... dark chocolate with streaks of milk chocolate, and hints of red. Absolute stunner to look at. But she plays better than she looks. After a good set up, ended up the best playing Strat I've ever had. Odd neck shape. Must be a mistake, thicker up near the nut, but thinner by the 12th, it's like the thickness taper is exagerated. It's starts thicker than a 'modern C' ends up thinner. I've no idea why that is on this neck. Shrug. I just love the shit out of that shape. It's my new favorite. Clearly a mistake of some kind, but a glorious one. Action is crazy low with no fretting out on bends high up... no buzz... the wood rings out too. Best sounding Strat I've ever played unplugged. The raw acoustic tone is quite nice actually.
    And after throwing Texas Specials in the neck and middle (it's an HSS), it's starting to sound like the best Strat I've ever had. 'Bucker will be Duncan Custom Shop, already know what I want, just waiting on budget to pull trigger.
    Anyway, modding MIM Fenders half the fun of MIM. Every MIM Guitar from Fender should come with a soldering iron. We all have different tastes. Get a good Mexi and hot rod it to be what YOU like. It's a tired old guitar trick, but only because it works sooooo well. You end up with a fantastic guitar at the end. A good Mexi, well set up, with pickups and other upgrades can throw down with any guitar there is, and be at home on any stage or studio you care to point to.
    Embracing this tactic, anytime I pick up a good Mexi, I kinda ignore the electronics (unless it's a model like the old MIM Lone Star Strats that came with... Texas Specials, or the old Player series with Vintage Noiseless and 7 way switching), and judge the guitar as a player. If it plays well, or can be made to play well, it's a good guitar that can be made to sound great.
    With this tactic comes a warning... you might not even be shopping for a guitar and come across a cheap Mexi Strat that is just too damned good and too damned cheap to leave on the rack. It's a perfectly valid guitar buying hack... but it often means you find the perfect guitar at a less than ideal time to purchase... and do anyway. Ask I how I know ;)

    I had my the pickups in my 90 MIM replaced with Texas Specials. It sounds great, but the original pickups sounded great too.
    So, I would like to see a video that demonstrates before and after next to eachother. Play a riff in one position and directly have it followed up with the exact same riff with the new pickups. That would make the comparison much easier.

      Thank you so much David. Happy I could help. You made my day bro! I just ordered new pickups for my old Ibanez RG570. I bought it brand new in 1988. I swapped out the PUPS at some point during the 90's(AAAARGH!). I found a set of the original V7, V8, and S1 pickups about two years ago, and returned the guitar back to its original state. I've been recording a lot of very high gain music in recent months, and have decided to get a new set of pups for it with much higher output. The RG570 is the only guitar I own with a Floyd Rose, and I need it for a lot of my recent compositions. I'll put up a video comparing the old, and new pick ups. It'll be a week or two.

    I have a made in Taiwan Player Fender Strat and wanna replace stock pickups with Texas Specials -- in your opinion - is the "bridge only" selection and "neck only" selections a much clearer twangy sound than the stock? i'm a fan of John Frusciante (chili peppers) tone (main tone not his pedals) and it's clarity

    • @MarshallSetUps
      @MarshallSetUps  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like my strat with the bridge and neck only option. Definitely brighter, and warmer tones can be achieved. It's really up to you, and how you choose to wire the switch. It can always be changed.
