HOW TO IMPROVE PICKUP SOUND [Fender Texas Special]

  • I decided to conduct an experiment with my friend Matvey Gubko. His 1963 Stratocaster Customshop required tuning of the sound characteristics of the pickups. This guitar is fitted with a Fender Customshop Texas Special pickup set. These pickups are slightly overwound and have a pronounced fat midrange that makes the frequency spectrum narrow. We will fix this now. We decided to unwind some wire from each single coil. You will see the result of the experiment at the end of this video in this video.

    Fascinating what a couple hundred turns of wire can do on a coil. Fine work

    Want to know a easier hack? Just lower the pickups. Here’s what I did.
    With the last fret on the low E and High E pressed down set the pickup height to 8/64ths on the low E string and 6/64ths on the high E. 👌 huge tone improvement. Hear my videos for tone demonstration.
    Doing this brought the best out of these handwound pickups in my fender custom shop SRV Relic Stratocaster.
    Cheers!

    That is the first set of Texas Specials I've ever liked. I always wondered how Gibson made their Epi Probuckers sound so bad. Now I know. They overwind the pickups. Muddy is the English term commonly used to describe Probuckers/Mudbuckers. Great video. спасибо

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you. Yes, you are absolutely right. Bursbuckers pro are heavily overwound, which makes them muddy. Resistance allways says about number of wire tutns. One time when I did a neck PAF clone for Brian Ray's Les Paul, he asked me to make it "hotter" - about 8 kOhm, to match the original double white PAF. I dissuaded him, because it will not affect the volume, but it will kill all the musicality. I made a 59 PAF 7.3 kΩ clone for it with an loud A4 magnet and it turned out to be just what he needed. Brian was very pleased.

      @@8BombCustom To me hotter pickups are like tone wood. Just a way for guitar/pickup companies to sell more product. If you can start with a good clean tone a screw driver, EQ, and effects can get you most any tone you want. Back in the 80's it was common to see a wall of Marshall's on stage. Alot of times back stage you could find a Fender twin with a microphone. The Fender was providing the guitar sound. The Marshall's were fake or not connected to anything.

    Strangely enough, it breaks up more after the mod, more sparkle too! DC resistance not always corresponds to how hard it drives the amp. Good stuff!

    Excellent video. A question. Is it strictly necessary to use a heat gun?. If this tool is not used, could the wire not be uncoiled?. Thanks for answering.

      @@8BombCustomPlease, another question. When unwinding the wire, is there no risk that any of the turns are in direct contact with the starting wire and could break it?. Thank you.

    I did a similar mod. The pickups are very high output for single coils so I lowered them to keep all of good characteristics but by slightly lowering the output it cleans up some of the midrange while still keeping the low end these pickups have.

    Я также делал в прошлом году с корейскими синглами )))были под 7ком все,думаю дай отмотаю прозрачнее хотел звук ,но немного перемотал когда грел феном не учёл этот момент ,когда остыли стали 5,4 -5,5 -5,3 вообщем немного накосячил но звук реально более чище стал) конечно с такими как ваши звучками я бы точно не рискнул)))😅

    Damn they sound WAY better after the mod.The texas specials that came with my roadhouse strat are by far the worst pickups I've used, so bad that I can't use the guitar in a band setting due to the sound just disappears in the mix, was thinking of buying a squier strat to take the pickups from it and put them in my Fender but after this I might try to unwound them

    • @8BombCustom
      @8BombCustom  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If a guitar doesn't fit in a mix, it's only partly a pickup problem. This is mainly influenced by the wood of the guitar. The pickup only transmits the guitar's vocals as a microphonic sound. Bad or good. But the foundation always plays a leading role.

  • @user-rj9bz5lo7f

    Just lower the pickup. I love a Texas special in the bridge position, heaps of presence.

  • @ranman58635
    @ranman58635 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would melt the thin wire. I just know. It doesn't take much heat and the pickup is ruined. Recommend only experienced solder user's here.if you have to do it, practice on a few that you don't mind killing.

    This is the exact reason I use custom shop 69's. Just measured out at 5.2k neck, 5.32k middle and 5.36k for the bridge. They list them as 5.8k, but they're all in the 5.2-5.6k range. Different wire material. That's why all the underwound 50s pickups sound so thin. Different wire type. That darker wire and DC resistance will get you right where you wanna be...

    honestly after unwound them sound clearly more distorted and louder/distorted (LESS CLEAR), I would NOT recommend this experiment....by the way, you guys forgot clear riffs before unwound them, that was extremely important..... experiment failed, sorry
