My late husband was born and raised in the general area. The town was originally called Berwyn. Gene Autry bought a big ranch west of town in 1941 and the town was renamed Gene Autry in his honor. I really enjoyed the video and seeing the museum again as it has been several years since we've been back.

When he was working as a telegraph operator, he worked for my great uncle in north east Oklahoma who was station master. Will Rogers saw him performing and recommended he make a living out of it.

Wow. Talk about a blast from the past. When I was a kid I'd rush home from school to see The Lone Ranger on TV. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans had a show on Saturday mornings, right after the cartoons. When it was over Sky King came on, but I was never big on Sky King. Fury, a show about a lack stallion, was also on Saturday mornings. I also remember a Gene Autry TV show, again in the early 1960s, but I'm thinking it was also on the weekdays. Probably on the same channel as The Lone Ranger. I'm thinking The Lone Ranger was after Gene Autry. Funny how I can remember all that stuff yet I have no idea why I came into the kitchen.

Hello Russ ! Great to be back. When I cross Oklahoma, I always stop at Will Rogers Archway on Interstate-44, North of Tulsa. Will once said "I never met a man I didn't like". The Archway affords beautiful views on the highway and on the scenery around in this "flatland". I also stopped at the "Roy Rodgers Museum" near Victorville, California. It is not really very far from the Arizona Stateline, maybe you could visit it next winter on a day trip. Nice video as always ! RICHARD

Hey Russ! I loved the Gene Autry Museum. I remember watching Aurty, Roy Rogers and others back when I was a kid, 65 years ago. I still love their old shows and movies. Good entertainment! I've never been to this part of Oklahoma. Thanks for tour! take care and safe driving.

I used to listen to Gene Autry on the radio and my Mom took me to see him and his horse, Champion at the old Hippodrome theater in Baltimore. I think he wrote “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Thanks, Russ!

I remember we had a Christmas songs album back in the early 1970s, Gene Autry was one of the singers. My late father's favorite Gene Autry song was "You are the only star in my blue heaven".

That was interesting! In the 40's I was in elementary school in a small town of Tioga, ND, population about 300. The city hall that was used for all civic events, and dances, was also the theater. I watched a lot of those old black and white western movies. When color came in it made it more interesting. There was always a cartoon and a news reel before the movie. I didn't see a picture of Audie Murphy, who became a western movie star after winning the Medal of Honor in WW II. So he had the moxie to be an action hero without needing a stunt double. Autry made enough money singing and acting to buy the Angels of the American League in 1960, when they were still in Anaheim. After he died in 1998, his second wife, Jackie continued to own the Angels until 1999, when she sold them to the Walt Disney Company. Jackie continued to go to Angel games until the won a World Series in 2002 and for sometime after. She is still living. Autry never had any children by either of his wives.

Thanks for sharing your visit to the Gene Autry Museum! I always wanted to visit when i lived in Oklahoma and now really regret that I never made it there. I did, however, get to visit the smaller Tom Mix Museum in Dewey, OK. Tom was also famous for being in movies. Since the museum included horses, i hope they had photos of Mr. Ed who is buried on a private farm near Tahlequah, OK.

Russ, I don't know if you noticed, but the museum was an old school (boarded up area where AC units were once windows) & the gym was next to the school building. I don't know this as fact, but it looks too much like the schools back in Arkansas. Also, I think there was an FFA/Ag shop out back. Btw, I grew up on Roy & Gene songs & westerns.

I've been to the Autry Museum in LA which is great, but I really like this one. It looks a little forlorn from the outside but inside...wow, what a terrific collection! You really have to hand it to the folks that keep the place going, without them all that stuff would end up being auctioned off like the Roy Rogers Museum.
By the way, if you have time on your way home from Dallas, I highly recommend the Luna Mimbres Museum in Deming. It's been called "the Smithsonian of the Southwest"...I wouldn't argue with that description at all. Happy trails!
