    Thank you for this well-explained tutorial and especially that you have added the pockets. I hope that long skirts will make a big comeback. Women do look classier in longer skirts. It’s hard to make knees look pretty.

    Just finished making this skirt, instead of doing pockets I just folded and sewed up the free edge, did a wider band and stitched the elastic into place all around (my elastic is constantly rolling, twisting and just not sitting still). With the excess you'd use for the pockets, I've instead decided to use it as a coordinating top, the fabric I chose is a super stretchy Jersy type so I've worked out the extra piece can be stretched and twisted to be seven different tops (so far), I can even tuck it into the waistband and make it look like a dress.
    My first piece of clothing made from scratch and it went so much better that I thought it would (especially given I only had half of the length I was supposed to have, but it worked out great) . I now have a comfy, stretchy, breathable outfit that fits me perfectly for my height (I'm 5'11") and size. Thanks so much for such a simple tutorial, I'll definitely be making some more of these😍

      Wow!!! Your outfit sounds beautiful! I'm glad it all worked out. My sister is 5'11 also so I know all about how amazing it is when your outfit fit perfectly for your height.

      @@MontoyaMayo I've already made two more of these for two of my daughters another full length and one just above knee which is SUPER cute with the little bow I made! They love them and I've got my sights set on making another for myself out of light, floaty, stretchy velvet fabric 😍

    Hi Montoya, I followed your instructions on making this skirt which were great. I have a problem with the skirt being too big. Not sure what I did wrong but skirt is 6 inches too big in the waist. How do I take this skirt in so it will fit. Don't think I can cut side seam due to the pockets. How can I take this skirt in 6 inches. Have not hemmed skirt yet. Thanks.

    Thank you so much for this and I can't wait to try it. I have subscribed to your blog.
    I was just wondering if you could recommend another type of fabric I could use other than rayon as I haven't been able to find much of that available near me that I like.This will be my first garment so I am very clueless sorry xxx

    • @mybookboundlife29
      @mybookboundlife29 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry and I should add I'm plus size so I don't like anything too clingy. Thank you again for your help xx

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for subscribing!! Don't be sorry, I welcome questions. I also use wax print fabric, it's 100% woven cotton (no stretch so you won't have to worry about clinging). Other 100% cotton fabrics with no stretch are also great. I would also recommend crepe, linen or a linen blend (linen mixed with rayon or polyester), and light weight denim... First garment! I am honored to assist you along the way.

    Thank you for this!! I have a question about the pockets: if we're not adding any, do I still need to cut my material in half to make front and back panels? or can I skip that step and then only have to sew one side together.

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. You can skip creating two panels and just sew one together.

    I love this!! I just want to ask I know how you measure the length but how did you measure the width of each piece?

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! For the width, 2 yards is 72 inches and my hips are 41 so I know that that is a good amount of ease.

    You make everything look so easy can I ask why you don’t sew the top of the pocket to the garment as I’m new to sewing and wondered if it was something to make life easier xx

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely sew the pockets in place to ensure you don't end up with a backwards pocket lol

    Hello Montoya,
    I have a question or should I say a request to ask you. I know that you aren't a full figure lady but your tutorials are more understandable then any one else I've very seen. So would you mind doing a video for a plus size maxi skirt. Thank you in advance

    Hey Montoya, I was wondering what type of elastic did you use for this project?Was it non roll elastic? I'm having a hard time finding 1.5 in black elastic (working with a navy rayon challis).

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kiki Adams Hey Kiki, I used regular knit elastic. If your elastic is rolling up, you can run a stitch in the side seams. This way the stitches will be hidden, just distribute your gathers evenly first

    How much space would I need to leave at the top of the skirt when pinning the pockets if I am using 2” elastic? I love all of your tutorials!!! Thank you so much for making these videos.

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome, I'm glad you love them. I measure down 3.5 inches down from the top when using 2 inch elastic

      noelle young Hey there you should actually attach them 4.5 inches down. I’m making one right now. And when I create my casing I’m folding over the top edge 2.5 inches

    The waistband in the thumbnail isn’t the one you did. Can you do a video with the waistband like that?

      Hi there. In a more recent video I show how I finish off the waistband in the same way as the thumbnail. You can find the tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/Fp8U41Pt7K0/w-d-xo.html . Fast forward to 16:13

    • @MontoyaMayo

      Yes you can use knit fabric.

    • @jusbnme1612
      @jusbnme1612 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Any special thread or equipment to use?

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jusbnme1 You can use all purpose thread. You’ll need to use a ball point needle 75/11 or 80/12 depending on the thickness of your fabric. Also use a narrow zigzag stitch when sewing the entire project.

    How tall are you? I'm looking at fabric right now and I really want to use it for a long skirt like this but the width of the fabric is 44-45 inches. I'm 5'9". Thinking I need about one more inch of fabric to wear it at my natural waist. :(

    • @MontoyaMayo
      @MontoyaMayo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 5'7. You may want to cut out your fabric with selvages edges together like I do here th-cam.com/video/z67N60Qvi2Y/w-d-xo.html this way you can get more length. My sister is 5'll and I cut out her skirt like this so that it can still touch the floor when she wears heels
