Offensive to trans people but also offensive to the character of Mike Baldwin, who over many years was a firm but fair boss who gave employees like Vera Duckworth countless chances. He was a ladies man, but not a chauvinist and I don't think his character would have worried about Hayley being trans. He was a money man and Hayley was a good worker: he wouldn't have given a tuppence worth of worry about what the rest of his employees thought. It was the same when they made Vera say homophobic things about Todd. It didn't ring true to those characters.
Mike did find it weird when he heard it from Alma (accidentally) but he was more afraid that If the women who worked in factory knew that Hayley was once a man and she was going into the women’s facilities he would have been sued by the other women. That’s what his main motive was to sack her but he was still super out of order for the things he said about her being Trans and calling her a “freak”
He said in the clip that he was fearing repercussions from the rest of the workforce. In his mind he didn't care that Hayley was a good worker as it wouldn't make up for losing everyone else.

Lots of the cast may become famous in their own rights but very few of them have such talent that they can get to levels where they can reject work opportunities. Working on a soap is like a regular 9-to-5 job, eventually cast members have to jump because often times any cohesive plans to build up a show based on ingenuity (such as Mike's character) goes out the window if somebody has come up with a juicy storyline idea that could lead to some kind of commercial boom. Mike Baldwin always slotted into the antagonist role more than the protagonist, so that was decided to be his current character at this part of the show, to play the bad guy. If they had a story cooked up where they suddenly had a good reason to make Curly Watts a seriously bad guy they'd disregard the character in search of that potential hit storyline. These soap actors are seen as interchangeable and if they want to keep their jobs long term they have to play a role where their character suddenly acts like a different person and just accept it even if they feel stupid for going along with it.
Poor Hayley. Though I think that Mike, while being a great Corrie character/legend, at the same time always did have a bit of a ruthless streak about him, guess that's partly how he got on in the business world.
And it's that business streak that led him to re-hire her. Any capitalist with half a brain knows to hire whoever is the best at the job, regardless of nationality, sexuality, gender, etc.
