  • It's been a fixture at a popular Mid-State park for more than half a century, but the steam engine at Centennial Park could soon be moving for a big restoration.

    Steam locomotives aren't just a peice of machinery, it's alive! It's human! It's the closest machine to a human life that man kind has built

    This is true, a steam loco comes alive when its in steam and there's something there that you could never appreciate when its cold and just sitting there.

    And they keep talking about a train.
    But a train is technicaly the whole consist of locomotives+cars or wagons, here they are talking about a locomotive, and what for one!
    Good to see another static hulk return to former glory, too many steam engines still rusting away as static exhibits in the open in museums and parks.

    It's a beautiful piece of machinery, love this type of news,would like to help out in the restoration, can I? UP's Big boy 4014 will be completely restored around 2018 cant wait till the day to see her rolling along the rails. Watch what happens to the price of all model railroaders models of this type once the real thing hits the rails again. Locomotives as they are brought us the plates we eat off of Richard. Finally some real news,no need for corrections. THE MASTER OF N SCALE

    This has been accomplished in several places. In my area, they removed a locomotive from static display and brought it back to life. A second more extensive renovation became necessary. However, internal fighting among the "club" may have doomed it forever. They are now locked out of rail access for working diesel excursion trains. Maybe it will be resolved, but I have doubts.

    The speaker here should learn that a locomotive is simply a locomotive and not a train. A train is a railcar, railcars with a locomotive or locomotives that travels to its destination. Railroaders do not think of a locomotive as trains until it made up with or without cars and is going to leave the terminal or station. ie cars in a rail yard are just cars and locomotives are just locomotives until they decide to make up trains with cars and then add the locomotive to haul the cars. Yes the GCOR rule does state Train "A locomotive, with or without cars". Anyway in RR Jargon that's how railroaders look at it.
    When a yard is making up a train it a railcar or railcars connected together with or without a locomotive and they add a locomotive or locomotives to the railcar or railcars to make up a train that proceeds to a destination. Oh yes there are lite engine trains out there also simply one or more locomotives that are deadheading to a destination that is usually sort on power. I started this comment and then read some of the other comments and tried to explain it all. I am just an ole
    retired railroader and yes there is also language used on the railroads that are a bit different ie some railroads have waycars and others call them cabooses. So anyway whatever that thing back there on the end of the train is a caboose or a waycar and these may or may not have a Conductor, a Brakeman , a Deadhead Crew or it may not even be occupied and so I guess it may have a ETM or a ETD on the rear of it all or it may not even have either but then if it does not have either then the last car will need to display a red light or red flag and if it don't have end of of train markers then perhaps it is not even the end of the train. Well anyway I had fun with this one. Railroaders all are required to pass the Book of Rules Examinations and also carry them along in addition to all the special instructions and all. Last time I saw someone weigh all the required rule books, hazmat instructions etc etc they all tallied up to about 37 or 47 pounds. You can see them carrying all that stuff and use their strong grip on them and so they call that carry bag a "Grip" Yall take good care.

    Train - Oxford English Dictionary defines thus "a series of railway carriages or wagons moved as a unit by a locomotive or integral motors" therefore this collection of metal is a LOCOMOTIVE, not a train!

      @MLFProp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      15 - 20 yrs? Where did you come up with that estimate. You obviously don't know that the 576 is not in as bad of a condition as some people feared.

    • @michaelnaisbitt1639
      @michaelnaisbitt1639 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lee Ferr You will find the main drawbacks will be Money as all restorations need O k. And labour finding the large number of people with the skills to restore her. Hence the approx 15 years time span Where I live a 4-6-0 has just been returned to steam it took 18 years

    • @MLFProp
      @MLFProp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you need to get your facts about the people behind this restoration and the current status of the loco. We've got people that have experience in steam restoration and the funding involved.

    • @michaelnaisbitt1639
      @michaelnaisbitt1639 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lee Ferr Don’t be so defensive. I am not against the project in fact I hope all goes well and you are able to raise funds and get people who know what they are doing. We have an organisation where I live that in recent years has restored a 2-8-0 and a 4-6-0 as well as maintain a fleet of three 4-6-4 express locos we are very pleased with them but all took longer than first thort and the time scale was also longer than anticipated. Our labour force fluctuated over the years and this is a factor you must consider. Good luck with project locomotive restoration is a long job

    What's with all this weight in Pounds ? 385000lbs is meaningless - 171 Tons is HEAVY.
    16 ounces to a Pound, 28 Pounds to a Quarter, 4 Quarters to a Hundredweight and 20 Hundredweight to a Ton - where I come from anyway!

    • @OnlyTheEd
      @OnlyTheEd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      385,000 pounds = 192.5 tons. If 2,000 pounds equals one ton, which it does in the United States.....last I knew.

    • @Rebel9668
      @Rebel9668 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's only meaningless if you don't know what a pound is. Oh, and you forgot Stone to throw in there as well. One stone is equal to 14 pounds.
