    in spite of the obvious occasional sound issues(!), this is an astonishing recording, He was never stronger as far as I know on record, though My Feet are Smiling is still one the great live records I have ever heard. This a gem. Thanks.

    Saw him as often as I could back in the day.....He's always played Royce Hall at UCLA and I heard him at Bridges Aud in Claremont once...I always thought he is what if a banjo-player could be if he could only find a 12 string guitar...Also he should be doing voiceovers with that Baritone!

    • @lindakrajewski3838
      @lindakrajewski3838 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He has done one voiceover that I know of, a TV commercial for tourism in his home state of Minnesota back in the 1990s.

    HIs playing was astonishing and revolutionary - a really big sound. So much energy, originality, emotion and physicality to his playing back then. Of course it comes at a cost, only young hands can play like that.

    • @hansrutzigen754
      @hansrutzigen754 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember correctly, his right hand gave out on him back in the 80's forcing him to change his hand position.

    • @georgesmith4639

      @@hansrutzigen754 The primary change was that he gave up the finger picks. After that he could play without the carpal-tunnel like symptoms

      @@hansrutzigen754 Yep, he played himself right into severe chronic tendonitis. Losing the fingerpicks and changing his hand position helped.

    Ok, which of Leo’s machine like hands is more amazing? Discuss.

  • @JohnDoe-gk7ok
    @JohnDoe-gk7ok 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Omg, his poor right hand! He is just fingerpicking the hell out of that 12-string.

  • @uncasist
    @uncasist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Obviously , Leo is still around and I do believe, still playing. Nevertheless, during this period he could work/abuse the tendons in his hands at a much higher level. This level of playing and intensity probably will never be matched /attained again. The nexus of singular focus, selfless practice and disregard for 'how long ' one could keep it up led to a handful of musically amazing humans durign this period in history. Leo was among them. The fact that you have to risk everything for decades to gain this sort of zenith tends to make it out of reach for many of the younger folk since 2000 since or so.

    • @JohnDoe-gk7ok

      Was this when he used steel fingerpicks? Explains why he could go so much faster.

      I saw him Leo in Ft Worth Tx in the spring of 1977, so I'm right there with you. I recall closing my eyes, and I swear I was hearing at least three guitars at the same time. I then opened them, and sure 'nuff: only Leo was on stage! Him, his guitar, a stool, and a guitar stand with a 2nd guitar. Amazing, just an otherworldly talent. Still is. The only thing different now is a lifetime of stories that he likes to share, mostly self-deprecating humor. :)

    14:20, "Could I geta little more bottom please?" The soundperson sweeps through the whole range, takes the bottom out , accentuates the mids, then the highs and finally @ 15:10 ends up with exact same sound he had before...(!)

    Your postings bring back great memories of seeing him in the early 1970’s with my wife at the two Amazing Grace locations and Kahn Auditorium, all in Evanston, IL. And, I believe, at Tulagi’s, in Boulder, CO.
