Add a few mirrors on the garage wall inside it helps to spot any type of movement approaching you. Retired LEO

I also put a motion detector floodlight inside my garage (originally just for convenience - the light switch for my garage is in a dumb location). It's one more data point for certain situations. In my case, it could tell me if someone had been in my garage if I have it open, but it also adds so much light to the garage that no one could hide in it - there just aren't any dark corners anymore.

@@Jleitte can you explain how taking your seatbelt off a block away from your home is actually going to protect you from someone trying to gun you down. From my basic understanding of body mechanics, a seatbelt does not impede you from retrieving your firearm. I’m also going to assume it’s not to remove yourself from the vehicle because you can’t travel faster than a bullet. You have the same statistical odds of being shot inside of the vehicle as you do outside of the vehicle. I’ve seen a plethora of videos of police officers, exchanging gunfire with people with their seatbelts on so I’m just trying to understand how this works.

IF YOU DEFEND YOURSELF IN ANY OF THOSE SCENARIOS IN CANADA, YOU WILL BE CHARGED AND LIKELY FACING SECOND DEGREE MURDER OR, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. Sadly, you are better off being a victim then a defender. The criminal can also sue you if he or she is injured on your property, by you should you engage. It actually pathetic. Murderers get a day pass from prison here. A man on bus in the dead of winter in -30degC, beheaded a passenger. He claimed mental illness and is now out free after short time in a mental institution. Trudeau wants to take all of our guns away, rifles, shotguns etc. He's already banned handguns in Canada without parliamentary legislation.

    Great video!
My personal ATM procedure since I get up early and I might be at the ATM at 4am:
    1. I leave my pickup in drive the whole time foot on brake.
    2. Fold side mirrors back out after they clear the ATM machine before I use it.
    3. Hit the Rear Camera button on the dash so I can see behind my pickup and in the shrubs.
    4. Remind myself that if something goes awry, forget about my card, forget about my cash that was just dispensed, floor the accelerator!
As a licensed pilot we stay alive by rote rehearsing of trouble scenarios. E.g. before I takeoff I always pick a landmark midway down the runway (weed, sign, nearby tree, etc), and if I have not gained enough speed to takeoff by that point, I never try to troubleshoot on the runway, I pull power and taxi from the active and figure out what happened on a taxiway instead. That decision was made long before I got in the cockpit, stress had less chance to affect my decision.
Rehearsing habits keeps careful people alive.
Jason, an ATM video will be awesome!

Former LEO,: I love the vids…I also make sure I keep my “gun hand” free from carrying anything if I can avoid it and turn off my headlights and music while slightly rolling windows down ( 2inches) before I get within 30-50yds of my parking space in my apartment. This gives me time to visually scan without letting would-be “ bad-guys”know I’m home. Before exiting the car, I listen for any foot movement, talking , etc with the windows cracked ….Also, I prepare any things I need to exit the car with BEFORE pulling into a parking space --don’t want to be sitting in the “kill Zone” fumbling around” while the “bad-guys” catch me distracted and stationary !!! 😮

So many folks have the latest and greatest Gucci Pistol and Holster but, couldn't do 5 push-ups if you held them at gun point. I am 58 years old. I have been working out for 2 1/2 years. I feel like I am 30 again. I had a little accident back in bow season and received a very bad cut to my left pinky. I couldn't workout for 2 months. I went back to feeling like a normal senior citizen. It took me a couple of months to climb back up to where I was. Honestly when I am fit, I do everything better... from guns to guitars and even just my thought process. I would love to set up a class with you this summer. Maybe me and a couple of friends.

Great video brother! Also, important to consider the unlocking features some cars have. It might be inconvenient but I for example disabled the automatic unlocking of all doors when I put the vehicle in park. I usually forget and have to go back and manually hit the unlock button when opening the rear door but it keeps the family a little safer and prevents anyone from sneaking into one of the back doors or passenger front door.

If you have a backup camera in your vehicle, utilize it. As soon as you enter the garage, don’t place the car in park, place it in reverse. The camera will beep if someone is approaching, you are already in reverse should you need to back out, and the car won’t automatically unlock like it does in park. As soon as the garage door closes, place the car in park and turn off the vehicle.

Outside cameras that I have access on my phone so as I get close to home, I can clearly see all four directions. Battery back up. I never leave trash cans between ,myself in the driveway and my home just so that hidden area can’t be utilized by a criminal. What about backing in to the garage? Do you think that would be worse since you don't have that few seconds to maneuver while the attacker is moving around the vehicle?
Or is that better as an escape route being to just pull out of the garage immediately upon contact?

    • @davidb9323
      @davidb9323 ปีที่แล้ว

Backing in seems pretty rare. Either way you can get out of the garage the same. An attacker would have to pass your door to get to you in that situation though. It wouldn’t be much of a barrier though.

I had to chuckle when I saw this, because it happened to my former husband and - for the would-be robber - it was kind of a disaster. One hazard was that we lived in a cul-de-sac, so these two guys parked their car to exit the cul-de-sac and waited for someone to come home. They saw my husband, who was in his 60s, pass them on the way to our house and the guy in the passenger seat jumped out and ran to our driveway to catch up when the garage door opened. Only the garage door didn't open. My husband parked in the well-lit driveway and got out. This flustered the robber who put a gun in my husband's face and started yelling "give me your money!" Well my husband was a miser on the level of that old Jack Benny joke, so he fumbled in his pocket for a few moments - making the robber even more flustered, and finally pulled out a ten dollar bill, which the robber grabbed and ran with. My husband never pulled out his wallet, which always had $200-$500 in it. :) Seriously though, these are good points.

It is also good practice to back up into your driveway or garage if at all possible. Not only for surroundings awareness but if you live in a neighborhood with kids at play.

I was rear ended at about 45 MPH which broke 4 vertebrae from the back of my truck coming down and me slamming into the seat belt. I could only imagine what other damage could have happened if I was carrying appendix. I also found carrying appendix that the seat belt rode just a little higher than it was designed to be at least for my body size.

Great video easy to understand explanations. You asked for comments. My preferred method when I exit my vehicles is I always check to outside mirrors lucky for me my truck has huge mirrors and huge blind spot mirrors great view. And I always have my shirt out of the way of my ccw. The emphasis on just being observant can’t be overstated. And don’t sit there with the door open gathering your items and vehicle running be ready to exit when you open the door. Same thing for getting in the vehicle. It took me years to get my wife to be that way.

And that's why I always back into my garage. Also have a 1-foot piece of 2×4 that's hot melt glued to the floor to get the perfect distance. Lastly, I'm also doing this if I have to make a fast exit in the event of a tornado; I live in tornado alley. 🌪️

It's so sad the way we have to live in fear nowdays!

When parking in a garage, you should look at the surroundings first. Search for cars nearby which you dont know. Maybe somebody is sitting in the car. Also check, if somebody was following you. Recently, I saw a video showing someone parking in a garage. Shortly after, another car parked in front of the garage and several criminals entered. The criminals had followed the person from the bank, where he had withdrawn some money.

A very good and informative video. Something to remember is that no situation will be the same, and you can only cover so many situations in one video, or even a hundred. Like it was said here, the best thing you can do to be a protector is to maintain your own physical fitness, and practice muscle memory, whether through shooting drills on the range or martial skills as you demonstrated. Even if it is not exactly right for the situation, the mentality of "What do I do? Oh wait, I practiced this a little bit," is leagues better than "What do I do? I don't know what to do,"

Being jacked helped deter alot, I also conceal carry because I know there's always crazy.
I don't know how but I scared these kids messing around, 1v3. Now it comes down to who's actually willing to go one step above and actually attack. I've never had that happen yet, but being 6'4, tattooed and paranoid I look like a fighter or gang member. I think that matter alot to have the same mentality to fight but not low ideas such as robbery or hurting people.

You can also back into the garage. I have to in my case with door placement against the wall. But I’m able to pull up to my door, open it, and pull in while primarily focusing on the outside threats trying to ambush.

Most vehicles that have auto locks can be set to either unlock or not when the vehicle is put in park or turned off. If you can, make sure the vehicle stays locked until YOU unlock it.

personally, i always like to back into garages/parking spaces. a little more work up front for increased visibility and safety when needing to leave. also faster to escape an area if necessary just having to jump in and put it in drive vs trying to quickly back out without hitting anything.

All very good tips 👍🏻 in the scenario were you took his gun after getting him on the ground make his clear and then use your own. People can leave their car on until the garage door is completely closed this way if someone sneaks in they can immediately back up if they don't have a weapon themselves. I think people will rather replace garage door and fix the back of my car then getting injured or killed
