We were easy to please, relative to now, for sure. I got to ask for one thing. I usually got a couple more, but could only ask for one, and my folks took me to the homeless shelter to give up a toy to a child that wasn't so fortunate. It could be used, but only in good condition, and we took care of our stuff because we didn't get so much.
Etch-a-sketch was much harder than it looked. At least it was for me. If there is an adult in your life who loves a specific car, getting them the Hot Wheels version is fun. I may be old, but I still expect toys in my stocking. Star Wars is the only movie I have paid to see more than once. The words scrolling on the screen was like nothing we had ever seen. Then the starship flew over. Mind blown. And the bar scene. There are no words that can explain how new the special effects were for a generation whose family didn't have TV when they were born. The advancements we have seen. It was nice to see how many of these toys are still around today.
@ouachitswoman you must be a baby boomer or silent generation? I am one of the oldest of Gen X and my family had a TV in our house from before I was born, my siblings and I would hear stories of years before we were born when my grandfather bought his first TV and they were so new that very few people had them and during the 3 or 4 hours a night that there was something other than a test pattern on, their living room would be filled with people from the neighborhood, sometimes there were people there that they didn't even know. Based on how Grandpa was I could picture him playing up the whole thing and being the big shot. My mom was born in 1942, and she had no memory of not having a TV, grandpa made the huge purchase in 1946, he always said "You have to understand, buying a TV back in 46, was more expensive than a car, it was quite a bit more than the Packard, (car) I bought the year before!"
Thanks for the great retrospective through Christmas in the 60s and 70s!❤️💚❤️💚 One of my favorite toys from that era is the Evel Knievel stunt cycle with launcher! I had many hours of fun and adventures with that cycle!😃 I even have mine in the original box from the 70s that both of our children have played with and enjoyed as well!
I remember favorites were usually creative, educational, or games: Lite Brite, Spirograph, Fashion Plates, Quiz Whiz, Simon, Trivial Pursuit, Jarts,Parts, Tree Tots, Twister, Life, ViewMaster, and one year's big thing: a small, portable record player. 🙂
I was born in 1969. I had too many of these to mention them all, but some favorites... In kindergarten my favorite toy was my Weeble Wobble A-frame dollhouse and playground set. My big christmas gift when I was 6 was an Easy Bake oven. Etch A Sketchs were my favorite cross country road trip toy. And Twister was a godsend to a lot of pubescent teens... It often broke the ice enough to lead to a more dareing game of Spin the Bottle and/or Truth or Dare... Which most of us wanted to play, but were too shy/awkward to get a game started... Thank you Twister😊 ❤
Born in 60! All my toys. We only had 3 channels on a TV that ended at around 11p or maybe 12a with a static sound and fuzzy screen. Sooooo, we had great toys that held our attention because we didn't have any type of tech or devices. Loved legos, and Operation was a challenge as a little kid, but fun. That was an interactive toy, right? Loved twister too as a middle schooler. Silly putty and slinkies. were a fav too. We had banana seat bicycles too 😃
Okay, this is a 60s/ 70s list? Because almost everything on here was a huge best seller in the 80s as well. I honestly would have thought this was a 70s/ 80s list. So that’s three solid decades of popularity for a lot of these toys. That’s pretty successful. 😮
18:04 the Pet Rock.... In 1975 I would have been 7 years old, and even I knew that the pet rock was stupid, I remember it being very popular when I was in third grade so a year later but I could not believe it there were kids carrying around rocks in a little cardboard box. The kids who had parents that were smart enough to not buy them or poor enough to not wast the money buying a rock, the kids would just show up with a rock, from the beach, sometimes they would have googly eyes glued to them, but if they didnt have the stupid cardboard box, the kids with the real ones... The store bought ones, would tease them relentlessly. I never had one I never wanted one I just didn't understand why anybody would want one. There were many small rock Wars that broke out because of pet rocks, after school when the kids that had been teasing other kids because they didn't have real pet rocks, a lot of the kids without pet rocks would grab up rocks from the ground and say look I've got a new pet rock only I've trained him to attack, and you'd throw the Rock at the kid. The other kid would be standing there with his little box that has a rock in it and you would say oh what's the matter your rock won't do anything... or is it too expensive to throw? The teasing didn't last too long after doing that. I'm not sure but I think that the saying "Dumb as a box of rocks" probably came about because of the pet rock. My father knew the guy who invented the pet rock, before he started selling them my dad told him it was a stupid idea. All through my childhood, and up through high school, whenever I would come up with an idea for something to sell, Dad would say well that's a stupid idea!... of course keep in mind... I also told the guy that invented the pet rock, that it was a stupid idea, and he made millions. So in his way he would support any idea i came up with no mater how stupid it seemed, occasionally he wouldn't say yhe whole thing. I pitch an idea to him, he'd just smile and say "who knows, it could be the next Pet Rock" just a subtle way of saying "That is a stupid idea"
I have had every one of these toys except a pet rock. I agree why would you spend money on something you can walk outside an pick up. But I did enjoy every other toy on the list.
My favorites were the Girder and panel building sets. You could build your own skyscrapers. I built the twin towers once Also I had the smash up derby. They were cars with a rip cord and flywheel that would power them. They had pop off doors, wheels. Etc. that would go flying when they hit something or each other. And My other favorite was the time I got a red Schwinn for Christmas in 1970. Been riding bikes ever since.
13:51 yes it is the same Nerf company, they started off with just a round ball I know the one that I had was orange, and then from there they went to all kinds of different soft things they said were safe to play indoors a Nerf football it is not safe to play football indoors even with a Nerf football, they came out with a boomerang they came out with so many things... This year I've seen it that I don't know if it's Nerf but somebody came out with essentially a Nerf basketball, it's being sold as a silent basketball, it apparently is waited in the center and then it's got a thick coating of that non-expanding foam so it still bounces and everything like a basketball it's the same size as a basketball but when you bounce it there's no sound. Which is how the original Nerf basketball and Nerf soccer ball were. The Nerf gun didn't come out until many many many years later after a lot of different products from the Nerf company
I remember some of these toys. I would like to see some vids from other countries apart from USA. A lot of GenX'ers etc cant relate to american content. ♥💚
Loved my Etch-a-Sketch, Lite Brite, Easy Bake Oven. Shrinky Dinks were cool too. I already had a nice rock collection going thanks to one if my great-uncles who owned mines and my Dad was a truck driver who usually picked up a rock at a truck stop or something for me in every state he stopped in. I was in no way interested in a Pet Rock.
I can honestly say I never had a pet rock of these when I was a kid I used to live in Vegas with my mom and my brother we lived reality couple of blocks down from the rock store my mom give me a dollar or two to go down and get some polished rocks you can get like I don't know I think it was either 5 or 6 for a buck but they're all colors and those are polished so my mom was like no problem with these but yeah I can honestly say I never bought the pet rock but it's a little cage and grass😂😂😂❤❤
Haha... yeah Operation gave me anxiety. I loved Hot Wheels. I still occasionally get one if I see a car a like. I wanted the whole race track thing, but I kept getting Barbie instead. I cut her hair and put a spider in her head. I finally got one stupid piece of orange track but it ended up being used to "spank". We played Twister in youth group but there was the added element of stuff like pudding, spaghetti, jello, etc... on the circles. We had very creative, though sometimes unwise youth group leaders. There was a suggestion to combine strip poker with Twister. We were told "no". Shrinkydinks were awesome. I started experimenting with other types of plastic...I do not recommend. Uh oh... here comes mom swinging that piece of Orange track.

As an 80s baby I had half of these as well. I loved my Lite Brite so much.
Loved this! ♥️💚♥️ Recognized them all; Atari was life-changing! And etch-a-sketch aka the Gen X iPad 💪🤓
Star Wars was HUGE. Lines at the theater were so long, people camped out the night before to get tickets.

We played Twister at house parties when we were too young to go out to the clubs. Drinking and whatever. 😆❤️✌️
