Had F10 M5 for 3 yrs. It was troublesome and luckily I had extended warranty. Some issues: Coolant leaks x 3 ,condenser, charge coolers defective x 3,faulty fender cams, ignition coil issues, herky jerky DCT was never fixed but they tried, front suspension clunk x 2, total shop times over a month. This car is fast but dangerous as hell because the rear tires would spin at almost any speed. My 10th and last BMW M car was dare I say fast but unreliable.
This shit is why I bought the 4 pot diesel. Beyond normal maintenance, all I've had to do so far is toss in a pound of refrigerant every couple of years. Could be the Schrader valves, could be the evaporator -- it's slow enough that I don't care to diagnose. Speaking of slow, sure, the car accelerates like a Camry. But put it in the twisties and that BMW chassis comes alive. I've pulled full-on Miata lateral Gs hooning it through California forests.

Agreed the only glitch for me is the replacement of the cooling line to the turbo. The thing has never let us down and such a total enjoyment. Materials and build quality are top rated too. Definitely lots of bangs for the buck especially if you got a used non abused one. The M engine is not typical problematic regular BMW.

The problem is he's testing the wrong M5. If he drove mine, he'd have a totally different outlook. You need a real exhaust, real suspension and a real tune to get the full glorious experienced!
i also have an f10 m5 and alot of those problems happen on the PRE LCI model. I burn a little bit of oil but not much just coils and spark plugs other than that i love this car.i have 112k miles on it and running strong.
Steve FOX Hi Steve, what does LCI mean? I am currently in the market for an F10 m5 and trying to gather as much info ahead of time. Would love to chat with you about your ownership experience
My 2014 F10 M5 beside some minor issues such as leaky inter cool .. line and AC needed to be recharged at 40k miles so far has been having zero problem with any drivetrain components. Steering wheel noise over bumps is another annoying issue at random. Other than that a very fun, exciting, confident car to cruise especially for long distance trips. Took mime across Dead Valley California and Las Vegas in the summer heat with no issues. Never lost a challenge with street idiots when they parked next to an M5. Still loving it a lot.

Dude, I know everyone simps on the E39, and rightly so, but I've owned E34 and E39. E34 never left me stranded but the seats bent and leaned out of shape. My E39 did leave me stranded because it was known to have CPS failures and send the car into limp mode in the middle of a road trip on the highway at 80 mph. None of these cars come without their gremlins, that's why you can buy a $114,000 car for $37, 000 a few years later.
Had my ‘14 plate LCI in the UK for 18 months and 25k miles (now at 55k). Zero oil consumption, ever. Has an increased battery capacity from factory so can leave for weeks with no issue. Has a different sound symposer so don’t get that fake noise none sense. Had a new transmission within 5k miles under warranty replaced with a different part code, no further issues. Had a comfort access door handle replaced, and that’s it. No check engine lights, no squeaks or rattles. Changed tyres to Michelin PS4S for radical improvement in the wet. Can do big miles, cross continents and see over 25mpg no problem day to day. Enjoy it for itself in the beautiful Welsh valleys when I can. It’s not all doom and gloom you know.
A Camaro ZL1 would eat this thing alive in every performance metric, be infinitely more reliable, and costs about $40k less (new) - oh but I know, it doesn't have the "badge" all the "I'm richer than you" little asshat M boys want. I loathe most BMW owners, 90% fit the sterotype perfectly
Having owned both a 2013 M5 and a 2014 M5 with competition package and carbon ceramic brakes they are almost completely different vehicles. I owned the 2013 for about a year I upgrade the roll bars to the competition ones and it helped a little but the steering sucked. They made it so much better in the 2014 M5 with competition and carbon ceramic brakes. I have owned the 2014 for almost 2 years now and can say its like a different vehicle. I have had only 2 issues first the rear axle broke that wasn't fun but AAA helped out and even though I was in the middle of nowhere I was only stranded for a little over an hour. The second issue was the AC condenser had a leak so my AC didn't work. Both issues were paid mostly by the aftermarket warranty which you would be stupid not to get one no matter the cost. In both of the M5's I owned I have never had a check engine light and as for oil consumption the first one used a quart every 2k-2.5k miles and the second one maybe every 4k miles. Never had a battery issue never had a check engine light and I drive the things like I stole them. Hence the broken axle. The F10 M5 is far from perfect, but you aren't really doing it justice by not testing the best version of it which is the competition package with carbon ceramic brakes.
Just incase anyone out there was thinking "maybe the 4 cylinder 2.0 Turbo is more reliable" I can confirm that it has plenty of weaknesses. At 70,000 miles I just replaced, timing chain, timing chain guides, and oil pump. Not to mention steering column bearing, and a couple front suspension components. BMW made good NA strait 6 cylinder engines, everything they make that has turbos is TOTALLY UNRELIABLE.
Antoine Pageau Just did the chains too at 65k under warranty. BMW recommended I changed oil pump too, while they were in there. It was $600. Did yours fail and did it fall under warranty?
The instant they introduced variable valve timing, reliability flew out the window. But nearly every (sub-7-series)car before that was actually reasonable in terms of maintenance.
So many owner reviews seem so much more positive than this. I think this particular one is a real lemon that had a haaard life. LCI f10s are reportedly very reliable and much sharper to drive.
Iv been driving around mine for last two years, 0 issue. Had a recall done on coolant line otherwise no issues at all f10 m5 is way more reliable than e60 m5 i think.
Bought used - Road trip Seattle to Boston no issues- Boston to Seattle no issues- added oil 4x it runs fine. Going through Midwest averaging speed -fast all the time. Love this car for now!
When people buy a BMW their perspective regarding reliability changes. Instead of thinking “200k miles with no serious problems” is reliable you think “2000 miles with no problems” is reliable. It happened to me, then I bought a Nissan and I’ve realize how catastrophically unreliable and expensive the BMW was. However, it did drive great. Also I don’t think other Germans are less expensive and reliable, I know for damn sure Audi is not.
I've had a 2013 M5 for 3 years now and fortunately, I have not had any significant problems. I also use JB4 and boost 4lbs over stock for around 600hp. It does eat a quart of oil about every 1,000 miles. I've replaced maybe 10 coil packs and 5 spark plugs outside or a change of all of them. At 100,000 I replaced the air conditioner pump. I've replaced 3 of the rubber short hoses for the liquid inner-cooler. The coil packs are about $24. My 335 and my x3 also go through coil packs, not really a big deal. I have 110,000 miles on it now and I've been pretty impressed. I have not had super-car problems, knock on wood. Any car aside from a Toyota or Honda would likely need as much. My x3 has 130,000 and runs like a champ. I like BMWs, I wouldn't call them reliable, but they;ve had the 4.4 for years now.
Had my 2014 LCI M5 for 4yrs and done 30,000 miles in it. The only problem I have had is the air conditioning condenser replaced when I first got it, (a known 5 series issue). The car has not had any of the issues you raise. It represents amazing value second hand and plays the role of luxurious daily driver and ridiculous hyper saloon. I never worry about it not starting or an engine light coming on, because nothing ever goes wrong with it. It'll even do 30mpg on the motorway, and the high speed acceleration is insane. Equivalent AMG mercedes and Audi's are quite a lot more expensive and don't really offer anything extra for the money (you could argue the sound bit and traction in the case of the Audi).
And you need warned about Scotty Kilmer. He is rude to his viewers, he never replies to his viewers unless he can knock them down. In some cases he gives bad advice. You have now been warned.
I think the main problem people have with m cars and the m5 in particular is that they don't realize this is a super car that looks like a sedan. So, by nature it's going to be unreliable and expensive to maintain.
There are quite a few cars with supercar performance that don't require that level of maintenance. There is a reason why these cars implode in value on the aftermarket. If it was normal the depreciation would be more consistent with the market but it's not.
Marlon Bailey That’s False, Supercars are usually less driven. Mclarens, Ferrari’s or anything 550+HP V8 with turbos are going to give you problems.. Porsche’s are the exception because they use N/A and are reliable Because of that. M5 is really a Supercar with a sedan body, the rich wouldn’t have a problem with the car.
I think you guys were unnecessarily harsh in this review. Drive an F10 M5 Competition. It is a sublime daily driver, with supercar performance and city-connecting grand touring capabilities. I have a 991 Porsche C4S and previously a 997.1 GT3RS and the M5 delivers a great driving experience. There are some faults for sure, but this M5 is one of my all time favorites.
The oil consumption, failing chains, leaky gaskets and hoses was resulted in the vehicle's running very high thermal parameters, we're talking at normal operating temperature 110*C (230*F) for water, around 120-130*C (248-266*F) of oil temperature and the coolant system pressure runs at 2.0 Bar (29 psi) to compensate the higher coolant temperature. (A normal engine is about 90*C (194*F) for water, 100*C (212*f)oil and 1-1.4 bar (14-20 PSI) for coolant pressure) If you were to run this parameters into a normal engine you'll start having problems soon let alone I can't imagine what are the thermals when you take it on a full day of track it be close to meltdown . I think this engine can be more reliable if we lowered its thermal and coolant pressure operation by installing cooler opening thermostat, oil thermostat bypass and a lower pressure coolant cap.
this is true for pretty much all german engine design. the hotter they run the more thermal efficient they believe it is. problem is most people dont drive their car under lab condition, in real life they use just as much gas as regular engine designs. that why good old cast iron engine last over time, plastic parts are usually only tested for 1000 heat cycles. hence why newer engine break so much sooner than older ones with more solid metal parts
@@Dunkaroos248Yeah BMW took emissions way more serious and honest than VW. Their older diesels are still polluting, but rarely a black cloud of smoke like in VW TDI.
My 2012 M5 has the same oil consumption issues. I add about 1 liter every 1.5 to 2.5 months. But so long as I keep feeding it, it seems to be happy. I think a third party warranty is a must for peace of mind.
My 2012 M5 F10 with 100 k with standard transmission for me the best car on the market, great driving experience and amazing fuel economy makes me keep this car forever!
I personally prefer the E28, just because it's that much lighter and the engine sounds so much more mechanical. But there's not doubt the E39 is a terrific masterpiece
@John Villeneuve The E34 has not been forgotten. People always rant and rave about it whenever the topic of the M5 is brought up. If anything, that and the current M5 are the only ones that are talked about.
@@masterdriveroftoyotazupr4164 The V10 is exactly why I like the E60 so much. It's such a unique car with an exhaust note you'd only hear from a supercar.
F10 M5 came out in 2013 MY so not sure how you got a 2012? The issues that you list are very minimal - overall the S63 motor is much more reliable than the N63 which is a POS. Also you fail to talk about the Competition Package which debuted at LCI and provided more power, better handling etc. I like your reviews but the focus on reliability is a bit much and usually blown out of proportion.
There is no such thing as 2012 M5. The first model year for F10 M5 was 2013 but yes it came out in 2012! Just like the new Supra is 2020MY but came out in 2019.
My 2013 m5 has original battery non of the issues he mentioned check engine light every week ? He must have some cheap ass tune on that car I beat the shit out of my car everytime I drive it I yet to see check engine light
When buying any car, the totality of the experience should be what drives the decision. Having performance isn't enough to make up for how unreliable this is. Warranty or not, I can't believe that people don't punish lazy manufacturers for inferior products by NOT buying their product. Why would BMW invest in making something reliable if they regularly sell their pile of shit?
Pain Killer Exactly. The fiat debt based money system is the true base of this negative dynamic over time. come to think of it, BMW is one of the companies right now that has a negative interest rate on many of it's bonds.
The S63B44T0 is a much-improved engine over the N63 (Google N63 CCP) and the post LCI F10 M5's are the only ones I would consider. The S63B44T0 is relatively similar to the S63B44T4 in production now in the F90 M5, as is also the basis of the BMW P63 motor used in BMW M8 GTE racing. How the vehicle has been maintained initially will go a long way into determining how well the vehicle/motor will run/last the rest of its life; get a low mileage example that has had its oil changed regularly, (using good oil,) and you won't consume any oil.
I have a f10 M5 competition and it`s a brutal car. Not consuming a drip of oil. Over 300km/h best comfort at high speeds on autobahn You can`t get more car for the money
@@johnrichter2096 There's a reason nobody likes the F10. It has too much power for what it is. The X5 M can actually brake and corner due to its massive brakes, tires, and awd. If yoi don't believe me, look at any curcuit where they timed both. The X5 is always faster unless it's only straights.
Y'all. I get that some of you don't have time for it, but from the bottom of my heart, if you genuinely don't have time to maintain a car of this nature.... DO. NOT. OWN ONE!!!! Learn to work on shit yourselves, stop relying on BMW, indie shops, etc to do the work for you and in the process, charging you as much as they feasibly can. Learning basic maintenance, preventative maintenance, common problems and their solutions not only gives you guaranteed peace of mind that if something does break, you know how to fix it, but it will 100% of the time guarantee you less strain on the pockets, especially in the long run. The goal is to have fun and enjoy a passion, you don't buy an M5 if you don't want either of those.
At least that V10 Bangle Butt version was sexy and aggressive. This thing is just a fat pig that can go fast. Ugly and complex lease special that will lose 80% of its value in 5 years.
My 2013 M5 has 100k miles and has been a dream to own. No oil consumption or battery issues. I think most owners of the F10 M5 neglect to do the necessary maintenance. Regular oil change are just the beginning. I've changed oil, filters, plugs, coils, transmission oil and filter, and differential oil on mine. With a JB4 piggyback tuner, mine is putting down almost 650 hp to the wheels. It's truly a car with a split personality.

I bought a 2003 192.000 km Z4 one year ago here in Germany. When it´s not broken, it performs really nice. I had to be towed two times already and the tow guy laughed at me. My last BMTroubleyou, I swear. I don´t care for the new ones anyway. Toyota Supra owners be prepared for all kinds of trouble with the engine and tech.
I've got an M6 with the same S63TU motor at 55K miles with Dinan stage 2 setup. It's been fantastic. Turbo coolant tubes did leak once but nothing else. It beats motorcycles all the time. GXR1000 and Harley owners HATE on it haha.
I had oil consumption problems after I got my F10. Liqui Molly has a product for reducing oil consumption that has dramatically reduced the issue for me.
nic louw went from an rs7 to an m5 and both vehicles were very reliable. Just have to take care of them and not abuse them. But I would not recommend them to anyone who doesn’t work on them normally as I do. But both incredible vehicles.
My 2015 M5 F10 Competition has none of these problems and I'm on 73.000 KM, i think this owner got a lemon and US/Canada M cars are much more lower quality because i haven't heard here in Germany the problems you are saying and I'm in a pretty big BMW club (maybe 2012 models?). Its been a very reliable car for me, this is not a car for the back roads, this is the Undisputed King of the Highways this car makes part of that 1% cars that can actually go 310KM/h really stupid fast while weighting 2 tons+ very comfortable. When you buy a any M you should know what you are getting into, you are not buying a toyota that needs maintenance every now and then this is a Luxury Sedan that happens to have a performance engine and a performance gear box.

I really like the design of that model, but the interior doesn't quite speak to me. Also that crack on the front bumper at 6:40 bothers me so much, but I can't see it at 8:19, is it because that, when the car is in the air, there is some tension on the front bumper ant the crack is visible :/ ?

I'm not talking about breaking the speed limit all the time, i'm talking about driving them like a complete ass. Sideways whenever i could, big smokey burnout launches, launch control regularly, etc etc. I loved the motor, i hated the fact that they put it in a big body like that. Although, that being said, pulling up to ikea in the touring and filling it up kind of has it's upsides lol. Here's the thing. I never had any problems with them. Previous owners had lots of problems, but i didn't. The berline had issues with the throttle bodies, exhaust system, transmission (SMG pump), etc etc. The touring had previously had a huge list of things that had to get fixed due to the previous owner filling it up with diesel (lol). I stuffed one, the other got stolen. I loved these cars, but hated the transmission. However, one thing would prevent me from ever buying one again ... the fuel consumption is unreal. Like ridiculous. The F10 M5? I got to drive one, and ... it was everything i hated about the E60, namely a big body, lots of weight, etc etc minues the one thing i absolutely loved about the E60, namely the motor. What if you got a regular 544i or whatever its called, chip tuned the ecu and installed like a quaife diff, maybe it would be a cheaper, more reliable alternative?
550i, no. It would be much less reliable. The 2013, 400 HP 550i has the N63 engine (that he was talking about with the class action lawsuit), VS the S63 in the F10 M5. The 2014 550i has the 445hp N63tu, which is a little more reliable than the N63, but still less reliable than the S63 in the M5.
BMW for a long time has been behind the game when it came to interior quality and materials. They seem to focus their attention to the under-the-bonnet engineering. That being said I wouldn't say they do a great job of that either.
Truth! My dad had an 05 545i (sold it in 2011, throwing it back a bit) and after only 80k miles the stitching and cloth around the A pillars were starting to literally come undone

Remember the e46 had engine problems too. nothing they make is reliable.
The instant they introduced variable valve timing, reliability flew out the window.
But nearly every (sub-7-series)car before that was actually reasonable in terms of maintenance.
japanwatchconnection Yes the N20 has timing chain and oil pump issue. My chain failed, pump didn’t, but they suggested I replace it at my own cost.
Wiseguy724 not so much. My 328 has 216,000 miles doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil
So many owner reviews seem so much more positive than this. I think this particular one is a real lemon that had a haaard life. LCI f10s are reportedly very reliable and much sharper to drive.
No it's because no other reviewers mention actual reliability, this car didn't break on them, it's that the f10s are known to be problematic

I like BMWs, I wouldn't call them reliable, but they;ve had the 4.4 for years now.
man, your content is gold, i like the way you uplift the car and talking about the underneath, you can actually see how good the car built. keep on !
Scotty Kilmer

It makes sense what You say.
Marlon Bailey
That’s False, Supercars are usually less driven. Mclarens, Ferrari’s or anything 550+HP V8 with turbos are going to give you problems.. Porsche’s are the exception because they use N/A and are reliable Because of that. M5 is really a Supercar with a sedan body, the rich wouldn’t have a problem with the car.
have we stepped back into 80's ? Whats happened
Part of the reason the run hotter is for emissions reasons

Get 2015+ F10 M5, most problems are the pre LCI version

S2kDude36 Try getting a used audi or ford, 10x worse hands down.
I've owned two E60 M5s. I got them both for very cheap. One touring (E61), and one berline. I drove both like i stole them all the time.
Oh, and the SMG ... it was terrible 90% of the time, but when you were on it, it was magic.

"I stuffed one, the other one got stolen"
You know how to get out of losing $20k+ in repairs. I bet your insurance is through the roof.
@@Pube83 The one i stuffed was stuffed pretty thoroughly. I caught a ledge right between where the bumper ends and the sump starts. I could see the crank shaft. It was well and truly stuffed. Total loss. A motor for one of these is very expensive. The market value didn't warrant replacing it.
The one that got stolen ... well ... let's just say i never got paid. Long legal battle with the insurance co. Always read the fine print. It wasn't parked in my garage.
It was found later on ... well some of it ... lepie.kinja.com/so-they-found-my-car-1450616289
Oh well ... life goes on.
As for the insurance premium. Nope. Both times, it was registered to a company.
Thank you for your review. keep up the good work!
Hands down coolest intro ever to a car video I’ve ever seen
GREAT video!
Understood, on the massive pop. Just logging all the little notes, it’s my retired Air Force aircraft mechanic OCD kicking in. Thanks for the response. I’ve always been a big fan and will continue. Best regards Steve
This was like my dream car when I was a freshman in Highschool followed by the 2013 M6. Now look at it, old depreciated nobody cares about it
Sad to see. M6 is too beautiful tho :/
The interior is pretty lackluster. I mean for what you are paying it’s kind of mediocre.
Randy Gareth except reliability. The N54 is plastic trash.
@@Subninja2012 Hence why I said they don't do a good job of under the bonnet engineering either. They are beautiful engines. Just poorly designed and built.
Randy Gareth because that big, cheap looking plastic cover is sooo “beautiful.” Gtfo! What a lame way to double down on a moot point.
Not many people know you do your own music , I love the attention to detail and how hard you work. I don’t have the money to support financially right now but I really really love this channel and the happy music at the beginning lol. Very catchy.
