I've stayed in Guanajuato 4 different times for months at a time, in 1991, 2001, 2012, and 2014 - and each time I find new things I love about it. It's very different from San Miguel de Allende, which is only 1 hour away by car, and extremely over-run with an older ex-pat Gringo contingent, who are trying to turn it into Santa Fe, and Santa Monica! Guanajuato, or GTO is bohemian, and artsy without being pretentious. A foreigner cannot really get by here without learning Spanish, as the Guanjautense (the Locals) are very proud of their culture, and their city! There is a fantastic Symphony orchestra that plays every week, and performs a lot of 20th century music, and occasionally, new works. They have performed Arvo Part, Michael Nyman, Ligeti, Xenakis, Stravinsky, etc... as well as more standard classics. There is a prestigious University - so there are a lot of educated, young people filling the cafes, and late night haunts - many which are just fabulous, and cheap! Then - there is the Festivals, the premier one being The Cervantino Festival - which is the best of it's kind in all of Latin America...2 and a half weeks of Chamber music, Theater, Dance, Installation Art, and World Music! There is also a superb Independent Film festival (GIF). It's generally safe - safer than Portland, Oregon! The architecture, and the setting, high up in the hills are spectacular, as is the climate in general. There are incredible Thunderstorms during rainy season, and - I will warn you...there are a lot of scorpions, but they kind of keep to themselves. There are cafes where they roast their own beans, and the best Falafel place (Habibi) outside of NYC, run by lovely Mexican Hipster chicks, listening to Joanna Newsom, Yep...Hipsters! They're everywhere. I LOVE GTO! Best place in Mexico! Shhhh... don't tell anyone!
Mexico is Beautiful and It looks like Spain and Portugal and Italy except it is the Best❤️ The People are Wonderful and they have respect for themselves and others! I’m going to live in Puerto Vallarta one day I pray that God hears my prayers.
Guys, you are misunderstanding everything. I've been in Guanajuato. There are many or multiple places to go and live on. Leon and Guanajuato city are examples of cleaner, safer, and less expensive than San Miguel de Allende city. For those who says "how is security?" Let me tell you something, if you do something wrong to get easy money, of you course you gonna get hurt. Finally, I'm glad to see foreigners living in Mexico. Foreign person changes Mexico face.
I think you misworded that last part. What do you mean by foreigners will change Mexico's face like it's a good thing? If people are coming here for that sole purpose, then by all means go back where you came from. I have nothing against others coming to Mexico to live there because they love the country, culture and people. But if you're coming here with that in mind, that's a very wrong reason to do it.
I live in San Luis potosi I pay about $215.26 a month for rent, My rent is $3000 pesos, then the gas is 200 pesos every 2 months so 100 pesos a month, then the electricity and water is about 300 pesos every 2 months (150 pesos a month) , I pay the garderner 100 pesos a month to pick the weeds . Internet is 700 pesos a month ($4050MXN pesos a month)
Tim Leffel Hey Tim, thanks for the videos. Could you give me any insight on how pet friendly Guanajuato is? I have a small dog and want to rent a furnished apartment.
+Todd Zelin Did you hear anything in answer to your question? I am not sure what Gloria's message meant. I have a cat, and was wondering the same thing as you.
USA is a lip off (I speak Chinese) just living expenses! Plus the weather. Not many places in USA with good weather. Inthe cheaper areas of USA, even a single person needs at least $2,500 a month just to survive.
I am fortunate enough to have a house in Mexico, even if it took 20 years to build it. I live in the US but travel frequently to Mexico to see my family. Rent here is ridiculous, about $1,200 or higher, and houses go for around $300,000 and up (I live in NY). $500 a month is nothing, I wish I could just leave and live there instead (My family comes from Guanajuato).
MINUTE 6:30 Hey duuuude, that´s the house of Kathleen aka "La Gringa"!!! I have great memories of that house, lovely and charming place. I lived one month in that house, great journeys to el mercado and the downtown. Did she repair the door??
Steven T That's the same I was thinking WTF most of my family's from guanajuato and non of them make near 500 a month and they live in houses similar to these

StarBassPrincess This city is one of the most secure of Mexico, since it have many universities there are students from others states and all of them agreed of the security of living in Guanajuato, most bcuz there aren't narcos in the zone.
I heard some good advice from a Mexican real estate agent. He said that a really good trick is to locate the neighborhood you want to live in and then find the "corner store" (tiendita) in that neighborhood. The people who own or have been working in that store for a long time all know exactly who's looking to sell or rent a place in the neighborhood (and all sorts of other gossip). Remember that things get done on a personal basis in Latin America, you can find stuff on the internet but the best way is always going to be through personal connections.
What about crime? Are you safe to walk around the area where you live, walk to the store and various places? What about how are you treated by local natives? Transportation? Hospital?
it is a tourist town so probably no problem with being treated bad by natives, but overall Mexicans are very service oriented towards foreigners and Americans even if no money involved. We have this inferiority complex, not me, but great majority, so any foreigner specially from first world is treated very good more than a co-national, which is weird. :D When I say not me, not that I would treat people bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way, or would treat as any national, but most Mexicans they do go out of their way to treat well foreigners, which has turned out to be a good thing because that's good for tourism. :D
People that como to Guanajuato day that Mexicans are the kindest people they have ever met, there’s a lot of people at night and in the morning so yeah you can walk safe and it’s a city made of alleys you don’t really need transportation and if you ever need it’s not expensive and the hospital is not expensive You’re welcome ;)
So your comparing your place in rural Indiana to a place in a city center close to everything in a city which is popular with not only expats but mexican citizens that just doesn't make any sense
Great video. Exactly what I'm looking for. I'm retired and looking to maximise my retirement savings. Two Questions. 1.)Is there highspeed broadband internet? 2.) How is the medical, hospital there? How do you pay for health ins. there.
+Mike S Hi I have lived in Mexico off and on for years. Yes they have everything they have in the US Health care is free or you can pay. also why use the internet I very seldom do. I enjoy the people that are so friendly. The reason I like Mexico is it is quite a bit like the US in the 1960's. To enjoy Mexico live and think like a Mexican. Leave the US behind and really learn how to enjoy people and personal interactions. The entire society works on the idea of Family, Friends and Community. If you are on the internet all the time you miss most of that. If you think like an Estados Unidos person you will miss all that. In Mexico life happens on the streets where everyone is. Thats why the plaza is so important and why people eat on the streets. They meet and visit. I am always meeting new people and making new friends which lead to new friends and on and on. hope this helps
Mike S You wouldn't contribute to the country. ¿Other grandpa what does he want free health cares? No Thanks. We don't like old or lazy gringos. Fortunately in 2018 we will be stoped

Nicholas Rickford Pavlović-Grant it sucks to tell TH-cam this but Mexicans in Mexico don't like cats SPECIALLY black cats they are seen as bad luck also in guanajuato you would be looked a as nasty for having a cat indoors its like having a big Grey rat as a indoor pet and nobody will care if you have any pet animals and long as they are potty trained
I'd like to rent in Mexico about 5 or 6 months a year....basically Nov. thru April. Are there homes for rent like this? Could I rent a house for these months and still pay $500 or $600 USD per month? Thanks
Given that there are a lot of American and Canadians trying to do the exact same thing at the same time of year, its not nearly as easy as if you were going to stay from May to October. Mexicans are well aware they can make money renting this way but there will be a lot of competition from other people coming down for the winter. I would look at less obvious places that are similar to Guanajuato like Morelia, Aguascalientes or San Luis Potosi as well.

You can certainly find a job in guanajuato if your willing to work like you've never worked before in your life and be willing to make the average 100 and something to 200 something US dollars a month if you work a lot of overtime yeah you can find a job no Spanish required
You are missing the point, you want a job or business back home that pays in Euro, pounds, USD etc. Because that's much more money than you would earn in Mexico. It's great for people who own internet companies or work in the tech industry, myself I'm a software developer, but there are lots of jobs. Erin's (another youtuber) husband is a special effects artist and he works remote, they lived in Guanajuato for a while too. You do not want a Mexican job paying Mexican wages. You need a certain visa to do that too.
Guanajuato ,better place to live, safe, clean beautiful city ever ..! Guanajuato is mexico ,and Caucasian they don't want Mexicans in usa sooo i don't get it
They don't want there cut throght mentality over here, I work with America born Mexicans they treat me with respect I work with new batch of starving foreign ers they are trying to get me fired so they can bring there aunts and uncles over to were I was working.

How do you make money?
charles davis. I run an online publishing company and I am an author.
@@TimLeffel Thank you, wasn't prying, I just ask things others don't lol.
@@charlesdavis7461 No worries. Lots of laptop workers living abroad these days.
too much I pay 120
What kind of place does that get you - is it a house or apartment, and what part of town? That seems really cheap even by these standards.
Do you live in a cardboard box?
Jorge Martinez Most likely bcuz you not rent a house but a bedroom, but yeah students normally rent just the bedroom and that is what they pay
120 is the range i need
Jorge Martinez. What does a smaller 1 bath, 1-2 bedroom cost? I'm a single cripple on crutches with a aging German Shepherd Service Dog on social security
i need to live where she lives 100 dollars
That's the real price locals get since locals make around 200ish dollars a month these guys are getting the tourist prices
PLEASE, stick to the point. I need a FURNISHED apt and DETAILS about the MONEY!!!!
duh
No se dejen robar estan cobrando en dólares en México tienes qué pagar en pesos mexicanos
500 a month's a bunch. 😴
is it hard for people who just speak english to get a job
You just need to work online, teach English, or run a business geared to foreigners.
How i start that type of business
Sound sucks
Terrible audio
OMG
Guanajuato ,better place to live, safe, clean beautiful city ever ..! Guanajuato is mexico ,and Caucasian they don't want Mexicans in usa sooo i don't get it
I think Guanajuato is not clean
Like ur ass.!! U don't use toilet paper. ?
