Media Matters was founded by David Brock, who is perhaps America's most talented political slime merchant. He started off as a conservative operative. His first big foray into media controversy was his attack on Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings.
After coming out as a homosexual, Brock did a complete 180 and became a left wing slime merchant. And he still is one.
Glen Greewald called them out about this also.
He was also James Alefantis' former lover and they were considered a power couple in DC.

We here in little old England have a state owned publicly funded media organisation called the BBC that is exactly as you described your media matters. The only difference is, that if you do not pay their fees on time every year they will fine us 1000 pounds or/and throw one in prison!
