  • A friend of mine who scraps old cars said he found a fairly complete old Pontiac with a stuck engine and let me know it was available for purchase before he sent it to the crusher. This Pontiac turned out to be a 1970 Lemans Sport 4 door hardtop with a 350 engine and TH350 transmission. Of course we couldn't pass it up! Let's see if we can get the old Poncho to live once again! This car has been SOLD to another faithful viewer!!! As always, thanks for watching!

im getting kinda tired of watching you wrench on piles of shit and then to only attempt to sell at a much higher price than you bought it... when you actually restore something its good but not spending money to flip its bad...

How do you know what a I paid for it? I think the asking price is quite fair. So all the time we put into that engine to get it running and driving doesn't improve value since I didn't spend any money doing it?

be done to make it go down the road. To the one guy Joseph who
was critical of you reselling those cars, sometimes it's not about
the money, it's about the challenge of making it run again and saving
it from the compactor. I learned a lot watching you work on these

I bought a 71 in 77. It was a two door. Only year they called it a T37. I think it was a slightly upgraded trim level on the Tempest. Same engine and tranny as the one you have in the 70. It was a strong runner.
On the Pontiac V8's, they were all big blocks. The only small block was the inline six. Some had an overhead cam with a four barrel carb, they ran strong too.
The only weak spot on them was the fiber toothed cam shaft sprocket. Designed to be quieter than steel. Lasted around 75k miles. Run great, then one time you shut it off it won't start.

In the early 80's I had a total of 14 LeMans. Oldest was 68, newest was 72. Loved them but bought them to flip. Had access to a pipe bender so I kept it simple. Dual exhaust, hush thrush mufflers, and whatever mags I could round up at the local yards. Bolt on HP and curb appeal. Detail with a wax and down the road they went. Here's what I learned about Pontiac cars of that vintage. At 40k miles they wanted a new timing gear set. At 60k miles they wanted outer carrier bearings on the rear. Otherwise if they were properly maintained they were a 200k mile vehicle without anything major. From the wheel swaps over the years I'm guessing (estimate) I have about 60-80 assorted PMD mags. I only kept the complete ones. Rings and such. Had one that had been wrecked before it got it. Whoever did the front clip put the letters in the grill wrong. So that one was a Ponitac lol. I left it for someone else to discover. Good stuff today. I thought this one was a boat anchor in a tin box but you got it to run and drive.

Way to stay committed! Most guys would have given up just based on the compression readings. Not to mention the timing and plug wiring debacle. I couldn't believe the starter didn't burst into flames. And then the tiny fireball! Duff must be tired from hunting. But he still knew enough to get his head inside the window as you crossed the railroad crossing, so he didn't get a headache. As always grateful for all your hard work and time. Keep it up!!

Speaking from experience, those Pontiac engines have a couple of odd quirks, one of which is the damned nylon timing gear that loves to spit off a couple of teeth and cause the timing to jump. I don't know if that is what caused this to become a 'no start' back in the day but I wouldn't bet against it, the failure usually happened at engine shut off. Ran good until parked and refused to start again. Good job on waking this one up!

Hey Mortske: Its amazing to see you working on a Pontiac sedan like the one that I had grown up with.... We had a '69 Custom S that was a pain in the ass to keep running... You did a top notch job getting it back to life and Duff really enjoyed it as well... A case of sammitches is in store for you for to keep bringing it back to life!!! The Custom S had a 326 engine that was a definite kick in the pants to keep it on the road.... From the home of PB Blaster Silicone spray.... Cleveland, Ohio....

Keeping in mind it's 52 years old, better frame then expected, yes it needs an incredible amount of work, but it's a runner. A classic. A Pontiac. Shout out from CT here.

Need some of that number nine wire on the exhaust haha., Puddin would be proud!
Got a will-it-run of my own in the works. Car is in the mail. Much smaller and simpler than the stuff you're working on, but my wallet doesn't let me do will-it-runs on full scale stuff yet. So RC cars it is. Little screamy boi two-stroke from 35 years ago that looks about as crusty as that ol' Poncho motor. Should be fun!

Thanks for going the extra mile. I have a soft spot for Pontiacs. I owned 4 of them. Well, actually 3 1/2 f them. One of them was a Pontiac Astra which was a Chevy Vega clone wit a little different chrome. It was a real POS.

How's about a shirt with you holding the flywheel tool over your shoulder like you are pulling a 30lb bass out of a river except, instead of a fish, you have the guts of an engine being yanked out of a car. Flywheel, crank, rods, pistons, valves with coolant and rust stringing everything together like blood and gristle.

Video made me get nostalgic. Dad was a die hard Pontiac man. Thanks for sharing. And by the way, he also had a 66 Tempest with 326. 😎👍

You're cranking that starter way too much at a time. I believe you are supposed to crank no more than 30 seconds before giving a rest. You're literally burning the starter up, hence the smoke pouring off of it. But I get it - we have that carrot hanging in front of us and it's sometimes hard to stop, take a break, or even retreat.

I'm a fan of Pontiac's since I grew up with them same as Mopars anyway worked on my 350 400 and 455 now all I have is a 1974 T/A with a 455 but I pulled the 455 and it has a ZZ4 350 in it now because I did not want to destroy the OG 455 for the car since I was having to much fun and the rev's were getting a little high for my liking so I pulled it to save it.
