100% Dan has saved many lives. Not 99%, but 100%.
    Thank you Dan Gryder!

Regarding "going straight ahead". It's best option except when it's not. Have a plan in mind before pushing the throttle forward. I had a complete power failure on take-off at 400 feet. In front of me was a mobile home park, to the left an industrial park and to the right a salt water marsh. I chose to land in the marsh. No one got hurt. When the insurance agent wrote the check for the hull he said "thank you". I said, why thank you? He said, "you saved us a couple of millions of dollars or more. Going straight ahead or a turn to the left would have cost you your life, your passengers and probably people on the ground. You chose the cheapest spot."

Turn ALL of the exterior lights (landing, taxi, navigation, ice lights, etc) on when you’re in the traffic pattern, day OR night, be as visible as possible… ‘

I partially agree with the NTSB approach trying to find out the reason for an engine stoppage. There’s is value to that if something happens technically so an AD might be necessary to eliminate that issue at times.

Just a thought Dan,educating pilots on crashing and airplane to walk away from it.The plan, choices, decent, approach speed no engine, control issues, thought proccesses etc.Worth looking at?How to go pass the point where in practice you go around if that makes sense.Which obstacles to hit and stopping the plane minimising damage tou you and the plane.Had a friend in a Tiger Moth engine failed on take off decided to use a fence to stop him from hitting boulders but the top strand was barbed wire almost took his head off, scapped the leather off this scull hat.

I liked the approach of that 777 captain! Be ready is key!!! I also share the thought of the lady CFI to turn around IF possible/the better option and safely (!) executed. Glad that someone has his/her own opinion and view of things. Our friend Dan can be a bit too opinionated at times… 😜

I’m not sure that this was an engine problem. The pilot never said. It could have been a door issue. The RV-10 has had some issues with the “gull wing” doors , and if one came open, it would have affected aerodynamics as well as been a huge distraction.

Thank God Meredith you finally got through to Dan about the impossible turn. That’s not impossible. We need choices, In sailplanes we do an impossible turn at 200 feet, called a rope brake. Most powered planes you need to be 800’ to 1000’ before doing the impossible turn, it’s back to DMMS!

The impossible turn is not impossible, it's very risky, especially under sudden stress.

The door doesn’t “pop open” like it does on other planes. If it opens it goes full open and gets ripped off.
No matter what, an abnormal happened and the pilot mis handled the abnormal. I think ROTOT but we shall see in three years when our government tells us what info they have right now.

Straight ahead or 30° left or right of straight ahead. All airports are encroached upon. My training airport, Q96, is now a Natomas, California housing development. At 22' MSL.

If I would of used your theory I would be dead now, along with my PAX. YMEN RWY 17 550' Victoria Australia 1985, C182 connecting rod failure, "Commercial hour building mail run to YKII" The impossible turn is possible, and I speak from experience, but not for the inexperienced or those who hesitate, however I do recommend most should land ahead especially if there is somewhere to actually land. A law does not exist whereas you have to return to the airport. The "Possible turn" can be carried out with planning, practice, and discipline.
