- While visiting North Suffolk we came across Halesworth on a recommendation. And what an amazing Medieval town Halesworth proved to be as we wandered the old section of the town in pursuit of interesting buildings and aspects to share.

Halesworth is indeed a beautiful town. My Nan & Grandad used to take me there some weekends on their weekly Sunday drives around Suffolk & Norfolk. A packed picnic lunch, deckchairs and a small folding table. Parked in a lulbye on a warm, sunny, summer afternoon. Happy days.
My grandad used to take us out on Sunday drives, but sadly I lived in a built-up town then. But I can imagine your memories. Thanks for sharing.

The Ancient House has me aching to do a pen-and-ink sketch; the hospice chazza is making my credit card itch.... What a pleasant little town this is!

I love this town. Such beautiful buildings. A lot of shops there I'd love to wander through. Too bad you couldn't get into the church, but the outside is beautiful, and I enjoyed the graveyard too. Another place I'd wander around in to see how many names could still be read. Thank you, Chris, Oana, and Poppy for another great walk around. I really enjoyed it.

You are the master of tours and stories…be they ghostly ruins, haunted castles or historic villages and architectural wonders of the past. Always very interesting, most entertaining and educational too 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊 That Victorian house with a serpentine wall is ideal for a romantic, sad ghost story 😄😉👍👍
Yes, I love that interesting Victorian house which is currently on sale for £700,000 with land! If only I had the money, what great films I would make there. :)
Some lovely buildings. The little hexagonal one looks like an old toll house. Very enjoyable.
It does, Chellie - or perhaps even the base of an old windmill. There are some fine buildings here.
It's wonderful to see you both again. The town is absolutely glorious. With fabulous attractive buildings. So great to see the mouldings and timbers . It makes one dream of yesteryear. Thanks so much for showing the church and shops.

We were arriving late in the day, Kari, which made the place pleasantly quieter but sadly all the shops were shut! Perhaps next time says Oana.

THAT'S A GREAT PLACE TO GO , I LOVE THE TUDOR HAND HEWN CHUNKY BEAM HOUSES AND I SAW ALOT OF THE TUDOR SIZED BRICKS IN THE BUILDINGS AND THE WALLS TOO , THEY WERE THINNER LONGER AND A BIT WIDER THAN THE STANDARD BRICKS TODAY , THAT RIVER AREA WITH THE BRIDGE WAS BRILLIANT TOO ANOTHER GOODEN M8 CHERRS 👌👌

Just a beautiful walk with you all we have many buildings like this in Hampshire they are 100, 200 or even 3 or 400 years old and the rest thank you for also showing poppy doing her tummy turns💗❤💗

What a Delightful and Lovely tour of this Beautiful town with my morning coffee with my Friends Onna, Chris and Poppy! Thank You So Much for this exploration through streets and alleys and walkways. The path by the river is mystical in its beauty. Now I would Think that The Black dog Antiques shop would most certainly give you a discount because of Poppy, eh? And I wonder what stories of haunted buildings the townspeople would know of? Every town has stories no matter where one would visit, as you well know. And so many beautiful buildings! Too bad the church wasn’t open but so many other treats to compensate for that. A Beautiful sunny tour on this rainy morning here in Pennsylvania and another Big Thank You! What a cool, eclectic town, architecture-wise. In some way, it resembles areas in mainland Europe more than what I've seen of England.
Hi Annika, I think its charm is uniquely English although in France I have seen in Normandy places that resemble some aspects.
Really enjoyed this. Ive been watching your videos for years Chris...I used to watch them when I was living in Australia & I really envied all the history you were surrounded with - I now live in Brixham, Devon & love it. There are some gorgeous places around here if you ever fancy a visit :)

The bookshop used to be the Kings Arms Hotel, and the little 'house' in the yard was the Kings Arms Tap, The Angel also had a 'Tap' as well, Halesworth had no fewer than 30 Public houses in and around the 18 century. Joseph Hooker was born in the town, he was a Director at Kew Gardens in London. George Lansbury was also born in the town he was the leader of the Labour party between 1932 and 1935, he was the grandfather to the Actress Angela Lansbury.

Blackdog Antiques was also the Halesworth Brewery, in the lefthand corner next to it was the entrance to the old GP surgery, The big house as you walked into the Market place used to be Nolly's pet shop, He had a Minor bird 'Simon' who would talk in cage, open to the market place in the window!

Hi Chris I've just watched your latest video it was great as usual but i am writing about your comments about the cuts in the wood on that 16th century house well back then they used to get the wood for building from ship yards from decomissioned ships because the wood was seasoned &very strong
Hi David, I used to think that as I once lived in such a house. But I discovered it was largely a myth as ship timbers were unsuitable architecturally. However, as I illustrated in my show, The Cult of the Puritans, a ship's mast was used to support a raised roof, and in a medieval barn in Waxham, Norfolk, a mast was used as a support beam. But to date, no other examples have been reported.
Sorry to keep posting, but I'm helping your viewers in adding information, The pink shop in chediston street used to be Hurrens Butchers shop, Down Chediston street there were no fewer than 5, YES 5 pubs back in the 1800s.
Rectory Lane, locally, is known as 'Ducks Lane' also did you know the 'crinkly-crankly' wall as it's known in Suffolk actually use LESS bricks than a conventional straight wall! The river is the River Hundred. If you had kept walking the footpath would have brought you back into Chediston street, this is Fen Farm. Sorry for so many posts but I hope this filled in a few gaps! As you can see by my user name I'm a Halesworth person!
The cottages were named in memory of a Town Policeman. (Copied from Wikipedia) In 1862 the only murder of modern times was recorded. Ebenezer Tye (died 25 November 1862, aged 24) was a policeman who was trying to stop a burglary in Chediston Street. However he was beaten to death and is now buried in Halesworth Cemetery. The murderer, John Ducker, was caught and was the last person to be publicly hanged in Suffolk.
The Almshouses also housed the library downstairs (until the new one was built) and the art gallery upstairs. There are no railings, because they were taken down, and melted down for the war effort (2nd World war) if you look at the wall you can see the holes were filled in.

I think its a reference to Black Shuck, the devil dog that supposedly haunts these parts. Bungay, Blythburgh, Southwold etc.

Will you explain to this ignorant American and others who might not know what "Grade II Listed" means? I think it has something to do with historical preservation, but perhaps you could do a short presentation about it in another walkabout video? With Chris on camera, please, in his dashing hat! 🙂
Grade 2 is a historical building which is protected, so can't be altered or taken down. I have limited knowledge. Grade 1 can have a certain amount of alterations up to a limit. Hope this helps. My experience of Americans is high intelligence 😊
Grade 1 properties are of national importance, and you can`t put a screw in the wall without permission from the authorities. Grade II is more relaxed, but you do need permission if carrying out certain types of building work.
