For those saying that can not hear Verdine, look at where his hands are placed and watch Marcus when they play Shining Star. You can clearly hear both (Marcus was lower on Shining Star). He is playing at the lower register once his sound came on. It was not on or very low at the beginning

Some commenters on this video have an issue with Verdine White’s ability to play bass, because he doesn’t slap strings like Larry Graham or others, but Verdine’s style was never to slap. If you want to dismiss non-slippers from what you consider talented, then such persons as Bob Babbitt, Paul McCartney and of course the non talented James Jameson would not make your vaunted list.
Craig Williams the issue is, that Verdine didn’t play at all. He’s a fraude on bass. Watch his NAMM videos. 9 years olds are better. Verdine is def not the bass recording artist of EW&F. He diddn’t do shit in this video besides talking “ah ah ah ah ah”
I think that verdine white's Bass playing is remarkable and I truly love everything about his music!!! Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything bad about any one of them they are my teacher because if not for the music that they made, then I myself couldn't play 😊😊😊. I've been playing Bass guitar for 40+years and they are still dragging me through the mud in a good way. I would love to meet all of them One day just to talk with them. Proof - when Larry Graham and Marcus start playing chords at 5:44, they look at Verdine and he is just playing with that same ole open E string while they really PLAY their basses. He was out gunned on this one. Not that it was a competition,but he was outta his league.
Adrion Bell Earth wind and fire is his neighborhood; when he is out of it,….he's lost. he knows it, but he, to the public, is the king,…..all that jumping around and now his licks and louis satterfield's licks are on audio tracks/midi tracks, and audio-to-midi-tracks; EWF are a theatrics band; very very good but it is what it is; we are all as unique as our fingerprints, and thats a fact!

I just watched it for maybe the 20th time with headphones on. Somebody please edit Verdine White out of the video! First they have to wait for minutes before Verdine joins in cause he has no sound, wiring and stuff. Then it’s all Larry and Marcus doing all of the funky stuff. The only sound Verdine is making is with his mouth. When Marcus and Larry play Shining Star, Verdine does other stuff according to his hands movement but not shining star and NO sound! There are a few moment where Larry and Marcus did a break...Verdine “played” on but you don’t here him. And by the hands movement and positioning and the many times he is touching the string, you even wonder what the hell he is up to. Also, why is Verdine watching constantly to the hands of Larry and Marcus? Why not checking up his sound? Well, that’s because he turned down his volume all the way down. Larry plays with a loop, Verdine didn’t do anything. Another proof and video he got exposed. Can’t watch this anymore. Such a shame of the EW&F legacy. For anyone interested, watch Verdine videos on TH-cam, videos from the past and videos nowadays at the NAMM bass demo’s. He is not the funky legendary bass player we all think he is. He’s fake. Bass forums are making fun of him for years because it’s more then obvious he can’t play. If you are a Marcus and Larry fan, you will recognize their sounds. While there is no mistaking that Larry Graham is the father of Thumping (Slap Bass) and Marcus Miller is the new reigning Prince, I find it interesting and incredible when Verdine White suddenly comes alive and hits that "Serpentine Fire" bass lick around minute 9:50 of this video. LOL I've been a Larry Graham fan since he first started and I remember buying Marcus Miller's first album and thinking I was better than him (boy, was I stupid), but when it comes down to it for all of us bass players, NO ONE will ever have the stage presence and legacy of hits that Verdine White has. He is simply a BEAST on stage and those Earth, Wind & Fire bass lines are UNTOUCHABLE.

I never though Verdine was the type of blow you out of the water solo bass player, but as far as his playing with in the song, IMO his playing was always on point .
To me he is like Well his bass note selection Kool from kool & The Gang

For real??? Verdine didn’t do shit in this video!!! It’s all an act man! What did you hear him playing??? He had no sound, he was just staying busy, but by the positions of his left hand, it didn’t make any sense with the accords the track was in! He didn’t do shit! He faked it like he always does on stage for many years. There was no bass sound while playing with a AMP, but you can even hear him “aaah aaah aaah aaah” without a MIC!!!
