    Excellent review, Bob. 🙂 SDR technology is what tempted me to get back active again in hamming after a long abscense; although the radio which initially perked my interest was the Icom IC-7300, Having been an Icom fan for years, I was impressed with the user inerface they designed; and being primarily a VHF / UHF /microwave weak signal operator, I very quickly also acquired an IC-0700. Picked up an IC-705 for QRP & hill-toppping use about a year ago, & the upoming IC-905 VHF / UHF / microwave is also on my shopping list.
    That being said, I've also been impressed by what I've seen of Flex's recent offerings. I also operate 75 meter AM with a vintage station, a Johnson Viking II I restored & a Collins R-388. I've heard some of the Flex radios on 75 AM & they sound superb. I've lately started to give some consideration on getting a Flex 6400 or 6600; I'm wondering if the ones with the integrated Maestro display are removable to use as you were showing here? That woudd be the best of both worlds; intially I didn't have that much interest in Flex because due to the need to ABSOLUTLY have the radio tied to a PC, but the more I look at them, the more I like what I'm seeing.
    73 & thanks for a great, informative review! Tom WA1LBK

      Tom- Let me throw you a curve ball. I lived in Austin for 25 years during the development of Gerald's business. I've owned most of the radios. I concur on the Icom radios...own several. The curve ball is: Go look at my review on the Anan 7000 DLE II. It IS the best Ham radio made today. It does the things that Flex has promised to do for years- but hasn't. I won't go into it, but take a look at my review. Keep a box with knobs- but for an RF lab in a box, it's the Anan.

    You do such a great job of this it certainly would help me, maybe others too, to give an overview on how all the different permutations of connectivity are possible, and/or required , for connecting the signature series radios and the Maestro (wifi, LAN, router, direct connect etc.). Also any limitations of internet connectivity, e.g. my max download is 2.5Mbit, upload 350kb. Also, considerations for the times when you would not have internet connectivity for your radio or Maestro to link to, those off grid travel considerations. Hope you will consider enlightening some of us. Again, thanks for doing such an excellent job. I am getting ready to take my General and your review has me leaning towards SDR and the Maestro in a big way.

    Wow what a great explanation for use of the Flex software.I am going to start saving for a flex setup.Bob what would be the best to get,the 6400 with Maestro or the 6400M.If you have a Maestro with the radio do both need to be plugged into your network.I know the Maestro can be wireless but they say hot wired is best.So does the Maestro plug into the 6400 then the 6400 plug into your hot wired network or do you plug both into the hot wired network.Your videos are the best Bob.Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into them.You guys doing ham radio reviews and instructions on operating are worth more then you can even imagine.You make the hobby so much more interesting.Keep up the great work my friend you are appreciated much more then you will ever realize. Hi Bob,
    Dean here, again (we spoke via the phone a couple of months ago, if you'll recall) with a few questions I neglected to discuss with you:
    Does the Maestro allow for Pass Band Tuning/Pass Band Shift?
    Can you turn off the Waterfall display and just run the spectrum analyzer all by itself? (Of course this is just my personal taste, but I fund the waterfall distracting and highly annoying! 😗)
    Regarding the SAM mode, can you select either sideband exclusively, or is it limited to double sideband SAM only? Does it eliminate the audio distortion of the sideband as it goes into selective fades? Does it maintain its lock tenaciously or is there too much "lock/unlock" during rapid fades? My goal is a receiver that has extremely robust synchronous detection. The ICOM R-8600 stand-alone SDR has a poorly functioning SAM. The only SAM's that are worthy are the Drake R8B, Sony 2010, and the Sherwood SE-3. All others are stinkers, so it'll be interesting to read what you say about it.
    Thanks most kindly for answering my questions. I await your valued response!

    • @Yavor54
      @Yavor54 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dean- well, I don't have the maestro here any more and have cranked through so many radios since, I honestly can't remember! I just sold a Drake R8- and indeed it's Sync AM was super. Had a Sony 2010 for 15 years and it was super too. If I could remember, I'd certainly advise you on the flex. Now I use an Elad Duo sdr. It is for digital only. It's a goodie, but has flaws... It's NB is the only one in the industry that is perfect. SW fading is usually so severe that no sync can hold perfectly. I turn off the agc and ride the gain. I also use three way speakers with a sub-woofer...excellent. some radios will not pass audio down to zero hz. The Icoms do. The ftdx-101d only lasted 3 months here. It is not ready for prime time. I'm rambling. I'll be back in the flex camp soon!

    so now that you have played with this and the 7610 and the ftdx101d if you were to compare how they handle a ton of noise, is the WBN on the flex that much better then the NB in the 7610 or the 101

    • @Yavor54
      @Yavor54 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OK, I have to admit that I have never encountered a type of noise that the wide NB was good at removing. Not yet anyhow! The Flex blankers are better than all the Japanese rig blankers. That said, the best NB out there is on an Italian SDR, the Elad FDM-Duo. That my friend, is a real noise blanker. I use the Elad 95% of the time.

    I have to say, I think this gentleman does a significant disservice to Flex Radios by insisting on describing the AGC Threshold knob as "RF Gain". It isn't. Flex Radios HAVE an RF gain control but this isn't it. What it IS is extremely cool and he misses it entirely. The AGC Threshold knob sets the level above which AGC will add gain to signals. That means if you set it just at the top of the noise, when the signal you're trying to listen to rises above that level by any amount, the radio will add gain to it with the speed you set in the "Fast, Med, Slow" setting, but not to the noise below it. It directly increases the signal-to-noise ratio, not just the overall gain. BIG difference. It is EXTREMELY powerful and unlike the usual AGC or RF Gain adjustments. Even with signals near the noise (that sound like they're IN the noise), it still has a positive effect when set carefully. Generally though, this video is nicely done.

    • @Yavor54
      @Yavor54 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I would bet a bushel of ADC chips that I have been responsible for the sales of hundreds of Flex Radios. That in fact IS my goal. The De-facto feel of the AGC threshold control resembles RF gain. For those coming from Superhet radios, they wonder what the AGC control is on an SDR. The effect of the AGC threshold control is not magical by any measure. In any case, not describing the AGC control's function in detail would have absolutely no effect on this video's impact on sales. "Significant disservice"... I seriously doubt it.

    • @Starlite4321
      @Starlite4321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course, I obviously wasn't referring to FRS sales when I said "significant disservice". I was referring to the fact that viewers weren't given a chance to understand correctly what the control does. I watched this video before buying my Flex. And exactly as you say, it contributed to my decision to buy it (along with about a thousand other things), and as I said, over all, I thought it was a good video. I hope you keep doing them. I've specifically looked for other videos of yours. But the simple fact is, when I started using my Flex I didn't realize what that control actually does and how well it works. Whether you want to call it "magical" or not is up to you but it is a big deal. It's certainly a lot more than an RF gain, like it or not. I use it CONSTANTLY and I've almost never touched the radio's actual RF Gain control itself. I am an example of a viewer who simply didn't get that from your choice to keep referring to it as an RF gain control which is why I appended this note for other viewers who might benefit from having it explained.

    The Japanese radio companies all need to buy one of these and study the user interface. Granted this is an expensive product and has a large screen but the user interface is light years more intuitive and elegant than anything The Big Three has ever done with an LCD display. It's like comparing a Tesla to a 1980's Ford. The Japanese radio companies are largely stuck in their old paradigm with random controls jammed everywhere, cramped screens, cryptic abbreviations, etc. I can buy an 8 inch Android tablet for $69 that has a vastly better user interface than the new $4000 Icom IC-7610.

    Thank you for posting this. Does anyone know if you have to have a Maestro for full WAN operation? I'd like to put a Flex in a central location, then access it with a laptop around the house. I'm not sure how the transmit/receive audio works with a laptop over WAN. It appears as though the Maestro is really just a windows tablet with some knobs.... So I'm guessing it is possible from a technical perspective. Just curious how easy it is to get remote WAN operation working with a PC versus the Maestro.

    • @FlexRadioSystems

      The FLEX-6000 series is designed to be remotable. As of today (9/8/2016) you can operate your radio remotely over private network from any device (Maestro, desktop, laptop, iPad/iPhone) over your network. We will be releasing an update to expand this capability over WAN in the near future. That will allow all of those devices to access the radio from anywhere you have a broad band connection with simply a user name and password.
      Thank you!

      There is actually a solution how you can work a flex-6x00 WAN from whatever location you want.
      You need to have a computer in that place which is hooked to your radio.
      Then what you do is have your computer at home take over the computer in that location. There are many ways to do it. Remote Desktop is one option.

      Well, the future arrives and it's full of amazing features. What you won't be doing is "tuning up", zero-beating, waiting for the rig to stabilize freq., re-tuning from drifting, get shocked by high-voltage, pull 350 watts of AC to make 100W of TX power, Use a crystal calibrator, accept splatter from a signal 5Kcs away, neutralize final tubes and pull your back out moving your radio. You also gain "Sight" for the first time. Seeing the band on a fast FFT spectrum scope is the biggest improvement in radio - ever. None of the other SDR radios scopes are as good as the Flex. You also get to tell the manufacturer what features you'd like in your radio and they add them- after you bought the radio. Your radio actually improves the longer you own it. Those are things worth having. HNY!

      Yes, but this is to provide control knobs.. a tactile feel. You already have a PC. You can run any of the Flex radios with it. The Maestro controls a Flex radio and allows using ALL the radio's features. No, it does not browse the web. The majority of Flex radio owners use a PC to control it. Some people want more flexibility...Some people like a tuning VFO knob. To each his own!
