I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I've never listened to her music in particular, but I've repeatedly seen live TH-cam clips of her singing on different performances, and she has consistently killed it. And not in a good way.

Gary Barlow is such a brilliant artist all around, for him to have been paired with Cheryl "She's not hitting all the notes, bless her" and to sing a song that was not his nor hers( and I love the Lady Antebellum original) is my WTF. Great selection, Georgina!! Excellent!!

Literally, her audition for Pop Stars had Louis Wash and the other male judge gushing about how beautiful she was. There was no other comment really shown.

Because Cheryl was specifically requested by the Princes. I guess Gary didn't want to inflict her on anyone else, so he took the bullet himself, hoping he'd be able to save something of the performance.

She could not hit the notes and this song is not that difficult for range.
This! it's not a hard song to sing. It just shows that she has no vocal control or strength for that matter. She's gorgeous, but we gotta be honest.
The problem that I have with cheryl vocals she is a mezzo soprano and she tries to sing in a key that's too low for her just to make her sound unique be doesn't have the control to do that then she most of the time be missing notes

Can remember watching this live, cringing and wondering if something was wrong e.g. a technical issue making it difficult for her to hear correctly, causing her to sing off key, it was so bad I had butterflies in my stomach for her all through it on the day.

It's funny, when Cheryl plays to her strengths she is good! She is like Selena Gomez, but the difference is Selena sticks to her strengths and that makes her great at what she does, Cheryl needs to do the same... still I'd definitely see her in concert because she is an excellent performer
The drummer is Donavan Hepburn. He is currently also playing in Jeff Lynne's ELO touring band. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the entire backing band (excluding the string section) are also Jeff's backing band, given the fact that at Jeff's first live appearance after his long seclusion was at the British "Children in Need" charity event being backed by.... Take That's backing band. Kinda comes full circle, right... ?

My thoughts. You don't have to be a good vocalist to judge other's vocals. Just like how we could all judge her in TH-cam :). Simon and LA can't sing but they judge as well. Fact is they know how to make it big. And when you become a singer, you're not just singing for people who could sing, you know?

I am so pleased you have reviewed this performance as I value your professional opinion. I always felt that it was a weak and embarrassingly poor attempt by Cheryl and I am surprised that Gary Barlow seemed happy to let her do it. I would have more sympathy for Cheryl if she came across as being more pleasant and a kinder person. How long will it be until her looks completely fade and she is forgotten ?

I’m going to be another person to mention that the drummer’s name is Donovan Hepburn. Yes he has been touring with Take That since 2006. Also touring with Jeff Lynne. In fact, the band in this jubilee concert, sans the orchestra, choir, etc, is Take That’s band. Also Gary’s.
What she could probably do with is 4 girls who can sing and perform and she can just be the personality that heads up all the interviews. Oh...

The problem is 1. Cheryl needs a vocal coach (and not the same one that Kimberley uses because although Kimberley’s voice has improved she cannot sing a song like defying gravity and I’m surprised somebody didn’t let her know that fact)
2. Someone needs to tell her she’s an alto and should stick with singing and practicing her lower notes rather than trying to reach the higher ones. I feel like she actually would have done much better if she sang the guy part of this song
