I've done a lot of research since this comment and got myself a mahogany wood banjo (instead of its brighter maple counterpart), put medium strings on it, and experimented with raising the tailpiece and a heavy walnut bridge. The bridge was way too dry and dead sounding, so I switched back to the stock maple. Picking closer to the neck like bela fleck and not way down at the bridge produces a more mellow tone as well.

How do you get such a mellow tone? As opposed to the harsh, high pitched twang of old school bluegrass?
Banjo setup, mostly. Lighter head tension, higher gauge strings, heavier & thicker bridge some combination of the above.
