There was a period of time actually when ironing your hair (with a clothes iron since they didn't have regular flat irons) was a thing. My grandma used to do it and said all the girls in high school did it for years. Wasn't until the late 90s girls started wearing their hair a bit more natural which was a trend started in Oahu she said. She was born and raised on the big island btw. In her high school year books, every single girl had straightened hair. My grandma said they used to borrow the the iron and iron board from the cleaning closet if someone was running late and do it at school lol.
Nice video. I like your length retention theory. I'm gonna use that instead of calling myself lazy. I've always put my hair up in a bun because 1.) I was too lazy to brush it and 2.) it's hot over here in Hawaii! When I was younger, I noticed that women would start putting their long hair in buns after they had their first baby (and I did the same thing). You never knew how much work it is to take care of your hair until you have a baby. I remember the first time my baby saw my hair down and she was so excited about it (she thought it was a toy and wanted to pull it). She didn't even know I had hair. LOL! And yes, taro is everything. We eat it from the time we are babies, not realizing the health benefits. It's just part of life. Aloha Energi! I'm curious to know where you lived in Hawaii. I feel like we've met before, perhaps maybe even in our past lives lol. New subscriber here! Love your content and showing your introverted travel lifestyle. Take care, Makia from Hawaii
Hawaii is beautiful. I can't wait to return. What I've noticed is that we can most certainly care for our hair so that we retain optimal growth but hair length is very much hereditary. I am mixed African, European and Native American and the women in my family all have long hair, whether we take care of it or not. Black people no matter where they are from in the diaspora can grow their hair longer than most people might think but realistically it may never get to the length of a Hawaiian's who are genetically predisposed for the hair length that many of them have.
@@GeeBee212 ur claims are generalizations because i have seen many black women and even men with hair past butt length. i have also seen native american/ asian/ european ppl with thin hair or limp hair. not every person from a race is the same. genetics are dependent on the individual not a race especially when it comes to hair. do you know that hair is literally dead cells? i think you should do a little more research because in Africa, the women have long loose wave/ kinky hair. or are you talking about black americans??
@@dvckbby Late to the party but I'll respond anyway. I have done the research B.S/MPA. Genetics drives phenotypes. Your DNA will determine your hair color, texture and length to a certain degree just as much as it determines your height weight and skin color. I stand by my original statement. It is not impossible for people of African descent whether they are from the Americas, the Continent or the Caribbean to grow long hair but most won't grow hair as long as most Hawaiians. People 500 years removed from the African continent still came from the same ancestors so don't be obtuse. However, Polynesian dna (kanaka kiwi, kanaka maoli and Hawai'i maoli in particular) are predisposed to that particular trait. It doesn't make long hair better than short or short better than long. I've traveled the continent and until recently hair length wasn't a big concern. Girls regularly shaved their heads for schools. In some areas it is still required. we have our own beauty standards and we should re-embrace them.

i learned a fuw new things here that wil help so thx for showing, its also funny you mension machadamiun nuts because tulsi who ran for president was always talking about her hawaiin nut recepy.
what i also learned and this is a less populer thing but do not wash youre hair with shampoo some people can wash it only with water but with allot of people its gets to greasie so do it with a shampoo that doesnt strip the naturel grease away or wash with a soap bar.
when you do this the naturel oils that stay on youre hair and scalp protect the hair and a nice benifit is you dont need gell or products to keep youre hair in place, the naturel oils keep youre hair in its style.
Nice job! Thanks for this information.

I'm curious to know where you lived in Hawaii. I feel like we've met before, perhaps maybe even in our past lives lol. New subscriber here! Love your content and showing your introverted travel lifestyle. Take care, Makia from Hawaii
I’ve lived on big island maui and oahu :)
Video is quite informative! I don't for some reason see the link to the study you mentioned under the description
let me add it sorry i forgot!
Awesome 👏 video thank u 👍🏼
Hawaii is beautiful. I can't wait to return. What I've noticed is that we can most certainly care for our hair so that we retain optimal growth but hair length is very much hereditary. I am mixed African, European and Native American and the women in my family all have long hair, whether we take care of it or not. Black people no matter where they are from in the diaspora can grow their hair longer than most people might think but realistically it may never get to the length of a Hawaiian's who are genetically predisposed for the hair length that many of them have.
Can you link the research behind your claim?
You should look up indigenous strandz.
@@kathymichel8893 Of course I can. So can you. It's called Genetics 101.
Great video
