  • I have cleaned many SUCKER FISH at this point trying all techniques and this one is the cleanest and most efficient in my opinion. Check out this video on how to fillet Sucker fish while removing all Y bones, that is correct NO Y BONES in these fillets.
    Can you eat Suckers? Yes you can! And they can be delicious as long as they are caught from clean waters and usually want to be eaten in the spring time when bacteria is at a low and water temps are coldest keeping the meat firm.

    Good tip Romes!! Those types of fish that have alot of bones would be great for fish stocks. And then you just strain it afterwards.

    Thanks! Might try this so I can get some filets that can be poached or lightly fried rather than deep fried. If the “normal” filet is scored horizontally all the way down, the cut up bones will crisp up when deep fried, but it is not a healthy way to eat.

    Pickle them and the vinegar will dissolve the bones, when I clean to fry, I just do the whole fillet and take a papertowel and doesn't take long to eat and remove bones with fingers. Better then waste

    I have seen and tried several methods to clean suckers. This one I feel is the best I've seen. I have cleaned over 100 suckers this season (2022) and I found a great alternate to this method that cuts out the wasted part. I actually take the whole fillet, tail included, bones and all off the fish. Using this method, I remove the bone free area as shown in this video. I bag and freeze them for fish fries. The meat is of excellent quality and taste. The remainder of the meat, approximately 2/3 of the fillet, is loaded with bones. Especially the tail. If you've never eaten canned sucker, you are missing a treat. The canning process completely dissolves the bones. Not even a hint of bone can be detected when eating this fish when it is canned. The canning process can be a lot of work. For me, it's well worth it. Canned fish stores very well. It is similar to canned tuna in appearance only. The flavor is far better. There are endless ways to use it in meals. As far as canning recipes, there are plenty. Some recipes I've tried leave the fish on the salty side. I have tweaked the recipe as to make it less salty for my taste. Give it a try.

      Maybe you had a different type of sucker with different bones, if I take the entire fillet off I get bones if I cut it like this I don’t get any. If fried at high temps the little bones break down or pressure canned.

      If the bones didnt fry up, you either scored too far apart or didnt let them fry long enough. We've done it this way for generations and VERY RARELY find bones unless the fish is huge. Even then, its rare for the bones to survive scores that are 1/4in apart or less.

  • @reedsutter8485

    You really have to keep those bony sections for pickling or else you’re discarding at least 40% of the meat on a sucker. If you don’t pickle or grind the bony parts, you’re really wasting a lot of good meat.
    This is a bit like killing a deer, cutting out the tenderloins and backstraps then throwing the rest in the garbage.

    • @reedsutter8485
      @reedsutter8485 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Papa Romes Outdoors The vinegar completely dissolves the bones so they just disappear. It’s really a great way to use those scraps. One thing to note, before pickling, you have to freeze the fillets for while to kill a certain parasite that can live through the vinegar soak.

    By no means am I an expert but we are a river family for generations. May I suggest 2 things. First always cut out the pink meat on the skin side of your fillet. There's a vein under it that's muddy tasting. You may know it as the slimy gray stuff fried. 2nd. Can sucker meat using vinegar. The bones become soft and is as good or better than salmon. Bread and fry. It's really really good.

    • @paparomesoutdoors711
