  • LYRICS:
Intro (Excerpts from the State Attorney’s intervention during the hearing in the court case between the Sámi reindeer herding community Girjas - from whence Sofia Jannok’s grandmother came - and the Swedish State. Gällivare Lapland District Court, June, 2015.):
“From the onset on, it is of importance to state that:
The Sámi have not been subjected to discrimination by the State.”
”The question then is what is meant by the concept of ethnicity, if it is to be claimed that the Sámi is an ethnic group.
And then it becomes clear that ethnicity as a concept is a highly debated one.”
”The ethnic aspect has been of no relevance from a historic point of view, when a distinction was made between nomads, in other words Lapps, and settlers.”
“[...] The entire archaeological evidence put forward by the Sámi reindeer herding community is of no relevance to the case in question.”
”The State consistently disputes the claim that the Sámi have been present in the area on a large scale basis [...] before the 17th century.”
Kill the bison, dig out the reindeer’s land Gold and iron, blood on greedy hands Drown the lávvu, burn the tipi down
We raise new ones, survivors we are now
We are still here, we are still here We are still here, we are still here
100 years back in the USA
Killed my sisters, cut their breasts away
In Peru my brothers always stayed
Shot down at home, but this was yesterday
We are still here, we are still here We are still here, we are still here
Steal our mother, thieves are not to blame That’s when laws are written by the same
We are still here, we are still here We are still here, we are still here
Directed by/Regi: Sofia Jannok och Anders Sunna
Photo/Filmad i Kieksiäisvaara, Pajala: Anders Sunna.
    Edit/Klipp: Mattias Andersson
Music/Musik: We are Still Here (long version), skriven av Sofia Jannok, producerad av Henrik Oja och Sofia Jannok.
WE ARE STILL HERE! Collab with singer Sofia Jannok and artist Anders Sunna, both residing in Sápmi, resisting the ongoing colonization, persisting to remain.
"Swedish State calls us "Lapps", questions us as a people, claiming: You have not been here historically, you have no rights.
We say: We are still here. We have every right to be. We ARE Sápmi!"

Much respect to the Sami people. Sami families were brought to St. Lawrence Island after we had experienced a famine in the late 1800s to teach the islanders how to care for reindeer. Thank you from this St. Lawrence Island Yupiget.

Hopefully Sámi people will not lose their pride and keep on fighting for their rights. My head does not understand Sámi songs but my soul does and I listen to them quite a lot. May the ancient forces be with you and guide your way!
Heartly greetings from Northern Germany, Erik

I was born in Finland, my family is from Savonia and Rovaniemi, we are Sami people.
I can not say my official name here as I use a nickname here, I participated in the creation of a natural wild life reserve after receiving a land and a reindeer herd from a parent after his death.
I am angry whenever governments or organizations or companies try to make believe that the Sami have disappeared, we still exist, we will not disappear.
I live in France, but I am a Sami.

dont talk so much shit....sami people are basicly the only people the scandinavian goverments recognize...everyone that steps over the border in sweden is swedish now....its PROVEN with DNA that sami people didnt come into scandinavia untill the iron age...much after sweds and finns but still noone calls sweds or finns natives. in sweden sami have more rights to land and water than other people...but good that u started a nature reserve...are wolfs, bears, wolverine and lynx tolerated there or reindeer hearders just kill them like everywhere else?

For my own protection, I've been harassed before when I wasn't using a pseudonym on the net.
Google and TH-cam know my name and address and they will be the only ones.
I am a rights activist, I have been threatened by extremists in the past.
I continue to campaign but more discreetly.

@@jimbombadill Can you do some actual research before spewing racist retoric that only harms the community. Where is this information that you are talking about. are you reffering to the iron curtain or maybe the restriction on the norwegian and swedish border that almost only effected sami people. is it the race studies where sami bones are still kept from their rightful owners or the language ban. or the fact that sami people lost all their land in norway beacause of a rule forced onto them from the norwegian government. or maybe the fact that swedish schools have almost 0 techings about what they did to the sami people only in one subject called "minority languages". or maybe the fact that sami people to this day have mines on their land that they can not stop that are destroying the land we have been living on for ages. or maybe all of the factories in sapmi actively polluting the air we all breathe. You should talk to a sami and see the daily racism we face because of our heritage and race. I still can not speak my language well since it was banned. I dont know my family name because sami names were banned. I have to relearn everything that these countries took away from us. you are dispicable and i hope you listen and do better because this is embarrasing for you.

I really love the artwork that goes with this beautiful song. That's a unique way to present the artwork. The battle the Sámi people have is not unique, sadly governments around the world seem to be bent on destroying the indigenous people of their own countries. These are the founders of the countries, the original occupants and they're treated worse then illegals that breach the borders.

I love your music! I'm so happy to hear such good music from a Saami musician. It's hard to find Saami people and information, especially as a Saami American as I am. There seems to be a language barrier that makes things harder to look up. What language other than English do you sing? Have you or would you consider translating your non English songs into English and/or other languages? I'm part Saami myself and my great grandparents fled to America to escape Saami persecution. It's actually a common story among Saami Americans, and many of us find out generations later because of denial. Many of us are trying to get in touch with our culture, and it's hard for us to. Any advice for an American Saami in getting in touch with their lost heritage? I'm sorry for asking so many questions you probably won't even answer. I'm just excited to be a fan of yours. Thanks for making such good music and giving awareness to Saami people and issues. :)

I have even experienced that when I pointed out flaws on their own texts on websites, that they F/"¤(/ referred me to the same goddamn webpage I was asking critical questions about in the first place. They are thoughtless robots with no other agenda than sitting on their desk until 4 pm so they can go home and watch TV.

"It's important that we already state in the beginning that the government has not discriminated against the Samis. The question is what ethnicity really is. If you say that Sami is an Ethnicity. It shows that the term ethnicity is very discussed. The ethnic aspect has not been relevant in a historic perspective, when you make a difference between nomads, and by nomads we mean lappar (lapp is a derogatory term form Sami), and residents."

Although the Sami have my absolute sympathy, we live in one world, and we have to learn to share the planet, with each other, for each other. Meaning that every place on the planet should be open to everybody, like we do accept the birds flying across the planet without claims of "colonization" and all that. "Colonization" is a human invention meant to say that other people (the "new arrivals") do not belong there. That concept and the activism against so called "colonization" is just so wrong in the 21st century in Europe.
If people want to remain living in a certain culture and tradition they should have the liberty to do so, that is the counter side to that. Respect each other, accept each other.

    • @magnanimousmargrave
      @magnanimousmargrave 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Colonization is in a narrower meaning than you suggest. One of the most well-known Sami singers was adopted at age 3 months from Columbia The Sami welcome others an live in peace and even offer to teach us how. There in no objection to immigration, but tearing up the land and making it unusable for the current economic activity is frowned upon--strip mines with toxic wastewater lakes, clear-cutting of reindeer overwinter grazing areas which take about 160 years to rrecover -- that's colonization. Besides being stupid nonsustainable development, it is done by using money influence to make the invasion and thievery legal. How would you like to wake up one morning and find that your only route to drive to work was now blocked by a vast open-pit mine, and then when you protested, mealy-mouthed politicians say "Only a few people are affected, and there are more new jobs. And there are no local people." ?? I suppose you have to sit on the highway that was cut to be considered local. That vast land can support only a sparse population to begin with because the ecology is incredibly fragile. Yet the basis of life, the leaching of rock to place trace elements in the water, begins with the lichen. We all depend on the arctic regions and the high mountains for that process, and idiots who think land is a commodity are wrecking it thoughtlessly.

    • @briancooley8777
      @briancooley8777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I entirely disagree. Humans are more dangerous and capable of causing mischief than birds, so that analogy really falls flat ( in many ways ). Also I believe that the people that had been living in and tending to a certain area for longer than others should have a bit of priority when considering what happens to the land (unless it’s destructive)
