  • We were camping at Chipanda Pools in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe when we were graced by a visit from an elephant. The majestic creature spent over an hour peacefully grazing on shrubs around our campsite. As dusk approached, it quietly made its way up the hills and disappeared. We respected its presence, observing its every move with a calm and attentive demeanor.

If an elephant visits your camp, it's important to prioritize safety for both yourself and the elephant.
Here are some general guidelines to follow:
    Stay Calm and Quiet:
Remain calm and avoid making sudden movements or loud noises that could startle the elephant.
    Keep Your Distance:
Do not approach the elephant. Give it plenty of space and avoid getting between the elephant and its potential escape route.
    Avoid Sudden Movements:
If the elephant becomes agitated, try to move slowly and carefully away from the area without turning your back on the elephant.
    Observe and Assess:
Assess the behavior of the elephant. If it's relaxed and not causing any harm, you may be able to observe from a safe distance.
    Notify Authorities:
If the elephant poses a threat or is causing damage, it's important to notify the appropriate authorities or wildlife experts who can safely manage the situation.
Do Not Feed or Provoke: Under no circumstances should you attempt to feed or provoke the elephant. This can lead to unpredictable behavior and potentially dangerous situations.
    Stay in a Safe Location:
If possible, retreat to a safe and secure location until the elephant moves on. Remember, elephants are wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect. It's important to prioritize safety and take appropriate measures to ensure a peaceful resolution to the situation.
