Oh my gosh you have to react to Katrina Velarde! She sings the Phone book. From Patti Labelle, Disney Classics, legends of the old even up to today's Artista, she sings them beyond flying colors!!!
one of her viral live performances is another DISNEY song, GO THE DISTANCE from the movie Hercules, performed on the Wish Bus. I'm sure you've already heard of the Wish Bus by now...if not, it's a mobile radio station where new and seasoned artists perform. they even have international artists over. there are 2 Wish Buses, one in the Philippines and one in the US, but Wish 107.5 is a Filipino radio station.

Will you please critique her "Latin Medley" (splices from Al Jarreau, DeBarge, Celia Cruz & Stevie Wonder's sought-after melodies) and share with us those admirable techniques in the vocal deliveries of songs, covered or otherwise? And yes, that was her note. Later or sooner you will hear, from some new subscribers suggestions, like me, that she can belt that high, hold a note that long, and swim deep down that low. Thank you for loving this as much as I do. I have always thought it was one of the best covers I have ever seen in my life. It was just perfect and all the moments you love always stand out to me. The key changes, the way she sets up the emotions at the beginning with the falsetto, and that last long belt at the end. All flawless. The only difference is I would never have had a problem with her singing the first chorus in falsetto.

Tears flowing here too. This was magical. And everytime the music modulates, just wow, with goosebumps, because you know that big note will be getting bigger and bigger . I've never heard this lady before, she's almost a perfect blend of both Morissette and Lea with maybe a healthy sprinkling of Christina Aguilera! I do love how you do a clean run first before delivering your analysis. Her English is better than most! I love how she finishes her words perfectly.

I know I'm late, but what a reaction to the Nuclear Reactor of a vocalist, which is Katrina Velarde (pronounced Ver-lar-day).
She has the "brutality" of an Xtina, mixed with the range of a Mariah, and add in some agility of a Celine.
This woman, whom I first discovered doing the cover of "Go the Distance" on the Wish bus live, had me hooked from day one.

Katrina and morisette are the two most popular vocalist in the Philippines for women side of course all the female vocalist are great but this two is the best in this generation of vocalist Katrina also has a ton video on TH-cam but there’s one the you will enjoy it’s another Disney classic from the movie Hercules called Go the Distance
Marc- Katrina is a powerhouse. Her rendition of Reflection is one of my favourites ever. She has an amazing vibrato and it shows. She's done many songs and Go the Distance is definitely worth checking out. So many good songs under her belt. No going back now...

Great song suggestion! Katrina has at least 2 live covers of this. The MusicHall Metrowalk version is live onstage. Both versions are fabulous. With every live performance of Katrina you can clearly witness that she does not need editing help at all!! Her sustained belts, riffs and agility, range etc. are amazing!!

Wow, you nailed Katrina, she buys into the story every time. Funny you mention Christina, joke from multiple vocal coaches is Katrina does Christina better than Christina.
Thing about Katrina is she has it all, queen of belting, riffs and runs, and anything else you want, but she picks and chooses what to use and when depending on the story she is telling.
Without a doubt, you have to see I Surrender duet she does with Jessica, do the studio version and if you want, come back with the live version, both are great, but somewhat different.
Some other must sees for you are, Never Enough and Latin Melody.
Great reaction and I hope I see more Katrina because you highlight things about her that others don't. The vocal coaches blabber about her tremendous skill and technique, but few can talk about her like you do.

Thanks Marc for the excellent, genuine and insightful reaction to Katrina Velarde. I became a fan of hers just after discovering Morrisette and as I explored her catalogue I found myself more and more impressed with her talent, artistry, sense of humor and vocal ability. Katrina is worth a deep dive, as she has many gems from her younger years as well as her newer works which showcase some amazing growth and maturity. Give her Latin Medley a listen. Her duet with Jessica Villarubin, I Surrender, is vocal bliss. Katrina can hold a note 42 seconds, has a rich buttery low register and is a true master at riffs and runs. Katrina is a widow of Mike Shapiro of New York, a former drummer of Sergio Mendez (Brazil 66), he produced some of Katrina's covers (Reflection, Latin Medley, etc) before he died.
And also her whitney houston medley where she is wearing the blue polkadots dress...

Well having said all of that… You should check out her version of “Go the Distance” Disney’s Hercules Theme Song originally sung by Michael Bolton. She did it LIVE sitting down in Radio Station in the Philippines (WISH 107.5) Can Guarantee… you’ll really love her.

one of Katrina's talents is impersonation or voice impressions. check out her viral video called BURN IMPERSONATING SINGERS 3 video. it's just one of her impressions videos...there's another one made for her called 1 GIRL 29 VOICES but that one is a mix of local and international artists so hou may not appreciate it as much as the BURN video.

There was the original Lea Salonga version and the new Christina Aguilera version from the real people movie. What Katrina did is mix them up together and came up with a better new version.
And you can expect to get it as much as like this when she does it live.
Ohh boy you are barely scratching her complete vocal ability. Wait till you see her duplicating almost all the voices of the best divas around the world including whitney, celine, mariah, christina, even nickie minaj. She also has like 4 lungs as she has shown how she can belt and riff for almost a minute without breathing. She has fantastic vocal agility, breath support, vocal manipulation, vocal range, and even a tone like beyonce. I genuinely think she's the soprano version of beyonce, it's insane how similar they sound.

OMG Marc! When I watched you I became equally emotional. You have that effect. This was a well paced performance with a few modulations to higher keys which always adds an excitement and she obviously has the vocal range. My only criticism, which is minor in the overall performance, is in the beginning when she consistently added those vocal turns/adornments. I file a bit distracting and predictable. Heard it too often. That aside, what a brilliant performance. Just when we think she can’t possibly go any higher, she does. A warrior of a performance! Confident!

This has got to be the best version of “Reflection”. I had to reach for the Kleenex box at some point. Katrina Velarde is criminally underrated. She deserves more love. You have to watch her version of “Araw Gabi,” another master class in singing from this topnotch artist.
