Well spoken and not a time waster! Your presentation is spot on! Thanks so much for this! I just moved to a low density population area with lots of forest around and I would love an owl or two helping out with the mole, vole, mouse population! We used to have many on a street we lived on in a more urban setting!
As a novice, I appreciate that you explained why you pre-drilled the holes. I probably would have just screwed it together and then been perplexed when it cracked!
Thank you very much! I'm working on my second video now and I'll make sure to be more clear about that sort of thing. Appreciate you, and thanks for watching!
I don't know what type we have in our yards both front and back. About a foot tall and mottled brown and ivory feathers. I call it a Barn Owl but maybe it is a Screech or are they the same thing? I am going to build one of these out of rough cut pine and I suppose that will work as well. Is the sticky roof you installed called "ice and storm shield". If so I will use some of those spare pieces that I have in the shed. Great instructions and explanations.😀
@@KodiakWoodcraft It is not very large and does make an eerie sound and not a "who who who". We have some hanging around our cottage at Georgian Bay and they are much larger and do sound like MR.WHO. Amazing how silent they are when they fly by.
Sure! It's a branding iron. I got it custom made several years ago - the name of the shop that made it is "MakersMarkBranding". Justin did a great job.
You might want to read the instructions for your miter saw. You're pulling the saw through your board when you should slide the saw out and push it through the board. It's much safer that way. The blade is spinning in the direction of the fence and you're going to dull your blade the way you're doing it.
Hi Uttam. The inside dimensions of the opening are about 5.0' x 5.5'. This is more than sufficient for Screech Owls. What I'm not sure about is how the house would apply to Snow Owls - I researched the ideal dimensions for Screech Owls before building this.
Just wondering if anyone has had any nesting screech owls with this design as the interior seems to be too small for owls (5.5”x5”) and the opening too large and too close to the top to allow predators access. Minimum floor space should be 8”x8” or even larger and entrance needs to be 2” below the top of the box per Cornell Ornithology Lab and others. Nice simple design though and well explained.
There are a few different "types" of designs out there. Check out the small business "Owl Reach". They have a similar design and have tons of photos of successful nesting. Thanks!
Nice trick to make us watch the video to get the dimension of the front panel as it’s not in your cut list…(It’s 16” your words not mine) Great instructional video btw. No crazy music and no going off on tangents talking about yourself, family, kids or animals. 😂

Thank you much. This was my first video and I was trying to figure out my style of video. Glad you like it.
Thank you!

Yeah, I tend to play it safe! Are you building one?
Great demo and info!
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic. Thank You
Thanks!
Well this is something I could actually do LOL! Lotta great stuff I didn’t know about owls!
Yeah I learned a lot when I researched this one!
Boom. Love it.
🤛🏼
Thank you! This was so informative. Thank you for explaining it to beginners.
Thank you very much!
Such a fun project! It must have been a HOOT! (Cheesy I know)
Thank you!
Lol
Thanks... great video and advice. Great presenter.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like the Box. I'm Curious ....Why are they made with the roof angled so rain runs off across the door? What if it's in the opposite direction?
I think the design could be improved by making the overhang longer. Good idea!
@@KodiakWoodcraft That would be good to help keep rain out. I'm going to try your set up. How much longer were you going to make the overhang?
Love this!
Thanks AJ!
Well done. It would be helpful if you provided the plans/dimensions/specs for the box.

It sounds like it might be a larger species! I hope your build goes great!

It sure is! A sight to see for sure.
Eastern Screech owls are about the size of a Nerf football. They are either red phase or grey phase (color)
HI. What can you tell me about you heated stamp you use to sign your projects?
Sure! It's a branding iron. I got it custom made several years ago - the name of the shop that made it is "MakersMarkBranding". Justin did a great job.
How accurate do you have to be heating it? Do I see you wet the wood prior to branding it?
@@arthurcarter9727 - It doesn't take tons of precision. Just a hot brand and an even press. Dampening the surface yields a better result.
I like your floor cleanout design, but I'd use a wood screw vs the eye bolt, cuz I'm cheap
Did you ever get an Owl to nest?
I got my first owl three years after publishing!

Thanks! You’re right and thanks for pointing this out.
What's the whole or entry size. And if it's other kind of owls is there any changes needed. I like to target for snow owls

What does the tape do?
It helps reduce tear-out!
I always thought, and read, that the entry hole should face North or North East. Does it differ from species to species?
It might. I must have found conflicting information in my research!
Most birds like sunrise to warm them after a cold night but I’ve seen owls in tree cavities that faced west too
What's the dimensions on the board?
Matt, thanks for watching! 1 in. x 8 in. x 9 ft will get it done.
Why the masking tape on the miter saw plate?
It's a quick and dirty way to prevent tearout.
What is the width of the stock cedar you’re using. Not the thickness but the width of the board itself. You didn’t list that.
It's about 7 1/2".

Haha. That wasn't on purpose but I might have to put that in my back pocket!
Great video but you left out the actual dimensions
Thank you very much! I appreciate you mentioning this. I've added dimensions to the description.
Nice but over kill for a bird
Lots of other options out there!
Nice looking box but you left out one major component for the welfare of the owl and offspring.
What's that? I did add an inner ledge after I made the video.
