Growing up in the Rockies above Boulder, everyone helped everyone or nobody survived. I can't tell you how many wood cutting parties we went to, nights my dad spent plowing gulches so people could move around before the plows got to them, and neighbors my mom helped after having surgery or babies. Everyone benefits!
As a retired snowplow owner, I would have looked at a professional model. I hope you have some spare angle iron and a welder handy. Be sure to check welds and bolts after each usage and get some ski wax for the blade.
yeah my neighbors have been really great too we share 3 miles of we all own to the center of it private mountain road and this winter was the non stop relentless snow storm one after the next and no not again lol everyone pretty much keeps to themselves until we're all out there trying to save the access from becoming a dogsled track good folks good to see them and say hi
Hi there, Owen Anderson here from Tacoma, WA. To save the headache and back ache of plowing the snow, there's something people have done in the past. They make a copper piping coil (worm) which goes around the base of their heating stove, oil furnace, etc. then they run discharge pipe underground (4", 3") in their walking path. The pipes are charged with water, is charged with 10% rubbing alcohol, 90% tap water. The end result is melted snow because of 42* ground above the pipe. My grandfather did this so my grandmother would never slip while walking to her vehicle back in the 1950's--1990's. I love what you're doing, your videos are awesome, and you are inspiring me to do something similar!
It was very nice of you to give them a plow. A misunderstanding of expectations may create a wedge. It's best to give a gift without any expectations. That way you aren't disappointed when they fail to do what you thought they should be doing. For example, how long would they be expected to do certain things. If they don't once, does it create a situation? Misunderstandings can cause a lot of grief. Nothing is truly free. Maybe neighbors could kick in some gas money or he could turn it into a little business? But it was a very nice gesture.
Its 80 herein Texas today. I cant believe the amount of show you have been getting up there. it was a foot deep last month when we drove through for our Wranglerstar collaboration . Beautiful country.
The thing about generosity, sharing and showing interest and concern for others is that it comes back to you. You both are a great example of what we should all strive for in our relationships. I'm sure you have already answered the question regarding why you mounted it on your friend's rig vs. your amazing diesel Ford, but could you cover it again? Thanks for your channel.
+Tom Smith This way it benefits more people than just ourselves. His truck + our plow = 5 families + us benefit. Us being the least in need. Simple. Don't overthink it. It's called community. :)
2600 + 200.00 reciever mount +tax is a lot of coin for that. For the same price as one of those, you can find a used "real" plow that will do a much better job and last longer.
I agree. That plow was wiggling around like a wet noodle even in that light snow. I hope it works out for them but having a single point attachment on a 2" receiver hitch just doesn't seem like it will hold up to the side forces created by the plow. A plow can be very hard on a pickup. I've seen much beefier mounts get turned into a pretzel.
When I saw the first photo of the Chevy with your new plow I thought, Jess bought a new truck! Yay, but then I watched the video and at about 5:20 in the video he said he gave it to the neighbor. Living off grid means being self sufficient and having a tool like that has many uses on a property. I think the gesture is nice but having to depend on someone else to show up and plow is not. I have my own plow and like to plow with the storm, clean up when I move other vehicles, push back my snow banks, make openings for melting to run off, move snow from the garden area in the spring, move old snow banks in the spring, back drag the driveway to pull loose material back in place to mention a few. I wouldn't ask or expect anyone else to do these things for me with their truck and plow and I wouldn't want to be holding to have to do it for someone else. I don't think it's selfish it's just not for me. I hope everything works out for you but I would have kept it for myself... unless it's a business decision and a tax write off...
Hi. I want to say that you both work very hard. But also, I wish that I could have 10 minutes of your happiness. I think most of your happiness comes from working hard and feeling a sense of accomplishment. You guys rock. Thank you for all of your time and effort that goes into providing me with new knowledge and entertainment.
Using a front hitch as the mount makes for a great system. Especially if your sharing with neighbors. PLFL you could even put a hitch on your truck and plow your own driveway in the future. Love the versatility.
Hey guys, There are small plows you can attach to your truck or Forester. Maybe the truck, if it's 2WD, isn't your first choice. But I have a Forester too and it's pretty good - not fabulous - in snow. If you have an LSD on yours, it may be significantly better. But Nordic Plow makes some small models that your Fozzie could horse around with no trouble.
Your lucky with that tiny little driveway. I have a 2 1/2 mile road from the county maintained rd. 1 mile of my road is a lot of steep hills with a big drop off that has not been well maintained by the neighbors. And my actual drive way is an easement rd that has some good hills and tight growth on either side. When I bought my used truck for my homestead, I actually got one with a snowplow included. However due to the road condition, and being called away to house sit my brother's home when the snows started to pile up, I opted not to winter over on my property this 1st year. This spring I am going to be doing a lot of work on the property to get started on building a home, and to do that I am going to be doing road work to get the access road in much better shape. As well as building a road to the top of one of the hills on my property.
It's not all luck. We chose to avoid long, private drives for just those reasons. We just don't have enough tools and don't expect others to make up for our inadequacy. Our neighbors have helped a time or two, but we aren't above scooping. Did it all the rest of the year. We attempted to plow out a new neighbor who lives about 15 miles away last night after dark who hasn't plowed in days and has a 500 yard drive with a small land bridge. It was just too deep, too heavy. Gave up when the berms got over 5' high. They're going to need a blower or dozer to get that driveway clear. Rough start to their off grid homestead journey. Thankfully they're well stocked with fuel, wood, food and internet. :)
@ Pure Living, Yes I figured you planned your access when buying. I didn't mean you were just lucky to have such a short drive, I suspected that was intentional. That was just me being a bit envious of your short drive. For me, the benefits of 40 acres with a pond and no visible neighbors was just too much of a temptation. Other than the road access the property I bought is pretty much perfect and everything I had wanted. I had weighed the pros and cons, and the pros just outweighed the cons. While the long drive is annoying in the beginning, as I work on it and improve it, it will get less and less of a problem. As well as once I get the majority of my building and infrastructure in place, the road again becomes less issue as I will have less need of getting beg equipment up the road.
@ Julie, the option to winter over at my brothers was always an option. Which was comforting to know I had the option. I would have liked to try to winter over a bit longer. I knew I was not fully prepared, as I had gotten the property only summer solstice, and really only got a trailer on the place in the fall. So I did not have a lot of preparations done for winter. But I could have likely stayed until January if my brother hadn't needed me to house sit right when the snows were just starting to stick. At that point it sort of cut me off from my plow. While I could have parked the plow at the bottom of the hill at a neighbor's, plowing uphill is not so easy. You really want to do the bulk of plowing down hill. So I ended up stay at my brother's earlier than planned, but nice to have that back up option.
I didn't understand either. So that was the neighbor's truck? I thought maybe they took the plow to the neighbor so he could put it on (their truck) for them. If they bought the neighbor a plow so he could plow their drive for "free" in exchange, that is kind of a weird arrangement that I would think could lead to misunderstanding and hard feelings down the road. What happens when the guy moves to Michigan next year? Or just sells the plow because he needs to raise money for something else? My neighbor has a plow that he bought himself and I pay him to plow. If he no longer wants to do it, I just find someone else; I don't have the investment in him and he isn't burdened by feeling that he owes me. I know if I was him, I wouldn't accept the plow.
I watched the entire video and was honestly confused also lol if it is a gift tho thats great! Working together in a community provides so much more abundance for everyone! Thanks for sharing, the footage is beautiful :)
I have to chime in with the others and admit that I didn't understand why the plow went on the neighbors truck too. I'll rematch the video. Love your channel, love both of you! You do a great, great job! I'm always excited when a new video comes out.
Since I got the snow scoop, I stop paying someone to plow me out. I have the bent handle that is much easier than the one shown in this clip, I can get a bigger load with the new style. And, I use the scoop to bring in cut up tree trunks. I have a big woodstove that has a huge front opening that I just roll in the tree trunks. The scoop is useful for more than just snow scooping.
Find some good full-zip snowpants. If you start to get sweaty or chilly, you can zip them every-which-way!! I like them because you can go 'full-pajama-mode' anytime and anywhere...and then be backcountry ready in a zip - literally!!
+Northern farmer I've been stalking Craigslist for a good used one. Hard to find for less than $5k and we need a house more than a skid steer. #priorities :)
I totally get gifting the plow. When we purchased our Kubota, we added a 6' chopper for the neighbor to mow the back of his pond/dam. They've done so much for us, it's a win win.
oh wow Alyssa& Jessie that really is unbelievable how covered in SNOW everything got, I luv the drone camera for showing the extent of the snowfall... I have no concept of how hard it would be living there a, in a snow town. I live in a mining town on the edge of a desert where the coldest it gets is like -4deg minimum for maybe 2-4days ONLY per year in the dry season/winter & a maximium +47deg HOT! in summer/wet season... I'm enjoying your videos heaps, keep livin' the homestead dream you two crazy cats (with a cat) ....... Valerie the Pilbara gurl WA Australia
LMBO!! We got the same hit here North of Reno!! I was out in the 1973 Mercedes Benz Unimog 406 having a blast!! It has been a fantastic winter here!! Cheers!!
Everybody is so critical about what you bought. I live in Idaho and would love to have a nice plow like that. Everyone wants to tell about the one THEY had that was stronger, bigger or painted prettier. It's looks fine will do the job it was intended to do. happy days
Good kharma , and neighborly barter. My oldest son's best friend clears his neighbors driveway when it's deep enough to need snowblowing, and his own using the neighbors snowblower. The neighbor owns the snowblower and buys the gas. Win Win
LOL! no pun intended. We had 1 snow fall, then it was cold for about 10 days after that it has been warm, snow is practically gone, last night we had a dusting, looks like we're going to have a brown X-Mas. I won't lie I love snow! it was better 30 years ago, I remember as teen going to the ice rink walking in almost 2 feet of snow.
You guys are a breath of fresh air. So I subscribed. And I would have never believed a lil' home plow could do that. If Meyer gave you that plow, they're brillliant because that was better than any ad I've seen recently. On top of that I've always had Western pro plows but I would totally get one of these. but I really want one for my Subaru!
Easy peasy home made ultra fast and simple snow plow. Step 1. Obtain 1 (one) U.S. Army Artillery Support Vehicle. 5 ton, 6 wheel drive. (Mine was named 'Beast') Step 2. Ignore the snow until it gets 3 feet deep. Step 3. Once the snow gets over 3 feet deep put chains on step 1.
A buddy of mine up that way has a ranch. They run a Donkey rescue. Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. Their asses are not liking all the snow this year! Nice job with the plow! Made it look so easy maybe even I could figure it out! You two stay warm! Stay safe! :)
I was totally confused after the video. I think I understand now. You were given a snow plow, and since it didn't fit your truck, gave it to your neighbor, who will plow your driveway for you. Yes?
I think he gave it to that guy who may be in need of something to do. I sounded like several neighbors are going to benefit from his eleemosynary act greases the network he is involved. It probably frees him up for finishing the house too.
I really feel sorry for you guys. Yesterday was in the 80's and today was in the upper 70's. But we'll pay for it in the spring with all the bugs. We really like to have a couple of weeks of cold.
you can back drag snow with it too. save all the shoveling out behind your truck.. cool gift for your friends.. it will do ya both well in seasons to come. peace!
I have a Myers snow plow on my XJ Jeep 6 foot wide, only it's not the hitch mount type like you have, it's a frame mounted under the jeep on to it's frame. It's not the easiest thing to put on and take off, however once I put the frame with the head lights and pump on the front of the jeep, putting the plow on takes a bit of grunting to get both lower pins in but is not to bad. I think Western has a "drive into" plow hookup so it's really easy, but I think a Myers plow has a much better blade. My plow installed weighs 400 lbs, I had to put heavier springs on my Jeep because I could not install air bags on that kind of suspension. The down side, if there is no trailer on or the plow is not on the ride is rough due to the lightness of the jeep. But I would sooner have a rough ride and sit up then I would have a sagging body like it was with factory springs. I plow my drive way and parking lot and I plow the neighbor's drive way for free, just to be neighborly. My Jeep will push a foot of snow on level ground in 4x4 without having to put chains on. During heavy snows, I plow a few times during the storm so It don't get to keep for my Jeep. Plows are great for wet snows that are not too deep because snow blowers often clog up in wet snow. But in deep powdery snow, I'd rather a snow blower, except for the part of being outside in the cold. A tractor with a cab and bucket on the front and snow blower on the back is the ticket, but you're talking about a unit worth around $35,000.00 to $65,000.00 new.
You gave your friends a snow plow... How absolutely cool is that. Wow. I really love your videos and what you're doing out there in the wild. Very impressive.
At first I was going to say that money you spent on the Phantom 4 drone could have been better spent elsewhere. But after watching the footage of your property and the fact that you need something like that to produce your videos, I say good investment. It's just a shame that the Magic pro wasn't available at the time you decided to go out and buy one. Great job.
I have a 1/2 mile long driveway and I got it plowed once. I share with 2 other neighbors, one neighbor tried to plow for a short time with his 4 wheeler, the other just kept driving and packing it down. I decided to walk up hill the 1/2 mile, lost 8 pounds so far. Next year a snow plow.
Idea for this year, a covered wood storage up next to your camper/building. Build an access door from the inside so you caa walk in and collect dry wood.
there are a bunch of plows in my area in the UP of mich. and the one snow moving unit that seems to make the most sense is my neighbors 48" lawn tractor snow blower, that's what i going to get
Hey I was watching you clean off the car and solar panels with a broom, which I always did car anyway, then I got the snow Joe it's AWESOME! I have absolutely nothing to do with or about them my mom have gave me one for Christmas lol It is a firm but soft like rubbery material on an extension pole and it even has built in LED's!! haha it works so good its just great I love it!
Great video. We have a neighbor who plows the entire street on his four wheeler and another neighbor comes through when there is a lot of snow (like this past weekend) and uses his tractor. -Kori
The snow plow did an awesome job for you ! Now the manuel shovel that you have is really cool where did you get that and is it the kind that they can do roofs with as well ? Well maybe the cross country skiis can come out again ! Maybe you can say bye bye drout ?
+cody cheney It's a snow scoop. Been using them since I was a kid. Kaufman and Silver Bear are decent quality. Think Kaufman is on Amazon. They'll last you years. Watch out for plastic scoops. Cheap Junk.
I think they are amazing with very positive attitudes, if I was living in the woods facing all these things, I would highly possibly have headed back to the city live!!!!!
White drone in the snow. Glad you found it and it was ok. Really glad you didn't have your horrible open/close music on this. I really like those snow scoops.
So it's Stupid-Easy Snowplowing if you suddenly receive a snow plow which you give to your neighbor who in turns plows your driveway for you? Maybe works for you but not applicable to most people.
I know what happened with the drone, you got too close to one of those grabby trees! (Grin) I remember shoveling snow, not with a scoop, but with a snow shovel. I can still see my dad shoveling out the driveway and then having to redo the part at the street because the city came along and dumped a load from the road onto the drive. His sighs, at that moment where very loud.
The first drone/ plow shot was Awesome! When the music started playing, it was like, "oooo what's gonna happen next?" Money Shot! Great Job, Pilot! Those cinematics! Are you inspiring off grid livers or film makers?! Loved the video!
aint this winter been fun ? snowed here again / still last night today is the second half sunny day I've seen since they lifted the burn ban on oct 7 when this storm started lol had to plow the whole road to the bottom I cant remember how many times, hey happy spring normal world any time now, where did you guys score those busted up presto logs ? I live in stevens co wa
I have a 1/2 a mile long driveway. Technically shared but it has to be plowed. One of the other property owners has one of their guys plow it including our parking portion of the driveway. I want to get a plow for my truck to help keep up with it
+Dashbshots It didn't but agreed. Skids would help. It floats pretty good. Doesn't bite too much. Might help reduce lip wear over time especially on asphalt.
Looks a decent enough plow for the use you want it for. I couldn't see if the height was down on to fixed stops or if it had any depth wheels on the back of the blade ? Nice vid.
Great video! Can't believe you dumped all the stove worthy wood from the pallet! I keep watching out for dumped pallets when I drive around and tuck them onto the roof of my truck in the middle of the city.
seems like in a past video you had a atv, why not put a plow on it. this way you get the tighter spots, plus still have the ability to do the whole drive if need be?
Neighbors taking care of neighbors, love it! Not sure what the cost is of the plow set up but not bad for a smaller plow. Look out for them stumps or big rocks because it may bend a light duty plow like that. Anyway, I'm sure you guys have already thought of these sort of things. The drone shots are looking great along with your editing, keep up the good work!
I can't wait to see how this holds up. Whole system looks weak and under built for that kind of usage. Looks like it was made for paved suburban driveways in the Midwest not off grid living out west. There is a tremendous amount of force being generated through that trailer mount. keep up the great vids!
That plow should have come with a set of shoes/pads, these should be installed especially if your plowing on gravel. I have a very similar plow and i plow about two miles to the highway now for 3 years and it has held up pretty well.
Look up Auto Socks. They are better than chains and much faster to install and take off. There are treats that On a semi They will pull more weight. They are made from micro fiber cloth.
Growing up in the Rockies above Boulder, everyone helped everyone or nobody survived. The owner reviews on this blade are not good. Lots of things breaking and very poor product support from Meyer.
Neighbors helping neighbors...that is great! The drone footage really takes your vids to the next level.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
yeah my neighbors have been really great too we share 3 miles of we all own to the center of it private mountain road and this winter was the non stop relentless snow storm one after the next and no not again lol everyone pretty much keeps to themselves until we're all out there trying to save the access from becoming a dogsled track good folks good to see them and say hi
Wow! I must say the professionalism in your editing is awesome in this video. Especially during the plowing part.
I mean this in the most respectful way. You're wife is pretty, and "lady like"; But she get's it done!! She is fearless.

But sometimes you do gotta shovel sheet!
And that's no fun in the heat.
7:18 such a great scene! I'm pretty sure the drone shot + awesome beat is what everyone dreams of having a snowplow would be like.

Answered in the video!

the gift of giving brings more joy than the gift itself! you guys are awesome! hopefully many more ppl will enjoy the gift you gave.
Find some good full-zip snowpants. If you start to get sweaty or chilly, you can zip them every-which-way!! I like them because you can go 'full-pajama-mode' anytime and anywhere...and then be backcountry ready in a zip - literally!!
I reccomend getting a skid steer with a blade attachment.... they are so handy to have on the acreage
Wish list!
Pure Living for Life I rented one and after that I was sold!!!!
+TheAmysv Beautiful! #community
oh wow Alyssa& Jessie that really is unbelievable how covered in SNOW everything got, I luv the drone camera for showing the extent of the snowfall...
Cheers!!
Everyone in this video appears so comfortable in a very cold - I like it.
one of your best produced videos yet. the drone footage and music was great.
I miss Idaho I was in Idaho city for 2 years and loved it . now I am starting my own project in Nassau ny .
I luv the titles you give your videos....they are so inventive. You are making great memories and a great future. Go forward and thrive.😉
Loved her comment at the end " That right there looks like firewood ! " . Great drone footage to !
Easy peasy home made ultra fast and simple snow plow.
Step 1. Obtain 1 (one) U.S. Army Artillery Support Vehicle. 5 ton, 6 wheel drive. (Mine was named 'Beast')
Step 2.
Stay safe! :)
spread a little love get a little love guys
Nice work guys. Neighbors helping neighbors.
just gotta throw it out there... these 2 are the cutest couple... they'll be great parents also....
Love you ,well done.Do not give up.Do not give up,you are inspiring
you can back drag snow with it too. save all the shoveling out behind your truck.. cool gift for your friends.. it will do ya both well in seasons to come. peace!
WOW WOW!! Good on you guys!! That was a cool video. Thanks for letting us be a part. God Bless.
Awesome. This past snow season was a crazy one for the NW.
Another awesome video guys. Keep up the good off grid job.
Wow! one year to the day. Look at all the progress you made. Way to go...
All that snow is beautiful, but I'm so glad I moved South where it melts by the afternoon. Nice gift to your friend and neighbor. Good work guys.
Wow! That's a lot of snow! Great video, guys.
Great video. So glad to see folks sharing resources. Back to basics is the way to go.
Idea for this year, a covered wood storage up next to your camper/building. Build an access door from the inside so you caa walk in and collect dry wood.
Thank you for sharing your life with the challenge with snow. It was a privilege to see this part of your life. God bless you all
Great Videos about real life. Thanks for taking the time to create them & share your life with us!
there are a bunch of plows in my area in the UP of mich. and the one snow moving unit that seems to make the most sense is my neighbors 48" lawn tractor snow blower, that's what i going to get
It's all about community... You Go Alyssa & Jesse ! And ditto on the compelling drone footage, you've both really become excellent cinematographer's.
+rudykazoodies Thanks a bunch! Community feels amazing!
that last shot is BEAUTIFUL guys thanx for the video 😊😊😊
+Janine Collins Drones are pretty rad eh? Glad you enjoyed it!
wow... that's a lot of snow in that last shot. Bring some of that snow down to Colorado. :) Thanks for sharing.
I really like those snow scoops.
so glad i live in the desert where its 83 today. no snow to deal with.
LOL. We know those signs all too well! :) Sounds like fond memories!
Its so much fun watching you 2.
Thanks a ton for trying to show us a better way.
these videos are so well made and cute
The first drone/ plow shot was Awesome! When the music started playing, it was like, "oooo what's gonna happen next?" Money Shot! Great Job, Pilot! Those cinematics! Are you inspiring off grid livers or film makers?! Loved the video!
Love the community interaction! Good on you!!
aint this winter been fun ? snowed here again / still last night today is the second half sunny day I've seen since they lifted the burn ban on oct 7 when this storm started lol had to plow the whole road to the bottom I cant remember how many times, hey happy spring normal world any time now, where did you guys score those busted up presto logs ? I live in stevens co wa
I like to see that they have Grown so Quick i was Subscriber#23 Wow over 92,000+!! God Bless You Guys!!
I have a 1/2 a mile long driveway. Technically shared but it has to be plowed. One of the other property owners has one of their guys plow it including our parking portion of the driveway. I want to get a plow for my truck to help keep up with it
You'll need to shorten the bolts that attach to the springs which will tighten the springs so the blade won't tip down so easily. Your Welcome!
Nice plow that should make things a lot easier
Now that you got the backhoe, can you scoop and dump snow to make a path?
Did the plow come with skids? Skids would be good.
+Dashbshots It didn't but agreed. Skids would help. It floats pretty good. Doesn't bite too much. Might help reduce lip wear over time especially on asphalt.
You guys are a hoot. I really enjoy your videos. You have great personalities I can't wait to see your house. God bless you both.
That is a lot of snow. That looks like a lot of work, too.
Interesting that the hot tub came before the plow ?
Confusing video. But very nice couple.
so when are yall getting one for the old ford?
I can't wait to see how this holds up. Whole system looks weak and under built for that kind of usage. Looks like it was made for paved suburban driveways in the Midwest not off grid living out west. There is a tremendous amount of force being generated through that trailer mount. keep up the great vids!
+Sean Nelson Agreed. We've been pounding in it pretty hard. Impressed so far but won't be shocked if the abuse catches up with us. Time will tell.
Pure Living for Life Sure Beats the heck out of shoveling!!!
That plow should have come with a set of shoes/pads, these should be installed especially if your plowing on gravel. I have a very similar plow and i plow about two miles to the highway now for 3 years and it has held up pretty well.
snow looks like a lot of fun and hard work too...Hopefully one day I will see snow like that, living in AU there really isnt snow.....
Where are you guys located? I used to shovel a lot when I was in Ohio...
Look up Auto Socks. They are better than chains and much faster to install and take off. There are treats that On a semi They will pull more weight. They are made from micro fiber cloth.
Lucky you I am in Ontario Canada and we have no where near as much snow as you.
