  • Description from IMDB:
The true story of a group of eccentric scientists who are responsible for manning a satellite dish inauspiciously located on a remote Australian sheep farm. Much to NASA's alarm, the unconventional Aussie team -- led by Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill) -- are the world's only hope for receiving the historic images of man's first steps on the moon. With help from the colorful cast of local characters, the crew struggles to overcome a series of mishaps.
If you have been following our channel, you will know that this is a project that I started almost two years ago with my daughter, who is now 12, to help people learn English. While it is something we dearly enjoy, there are costs to creating this content. One of my followers suggested that I launch a Patreon account, so that if you feel grateful for what you are learning on our channel, you may buy us a cup of coffee ☕ or hot chocolate (hot chocolate for Kat, as she is 12 and maybe should not be drinking coffee). Thank you so much for watching and providing us feedback and encouraging comments 😊😄😁. Also, for our future Patreon sponsors, I will be adding a thank you at the end of the videos in the future with your names 😊

I'd hate to drag my arse from the middle of Australia to The Dish...Great little film, and a nice review.

Parkes is the site of a radiotelescope, looking into deep space, not a “ communication dish “. Its role with NASA was only temporary. The other dishes built for NASA in Australia were at Tidbinbilla, and Honey Suckle Creek.
Sam Neill ( the dishmaster ) has been in a large number of films eg Hunt for Red October as well as numerous television series eg Riley Ace of Spies

Thanks for your review. As you say it's a gentle comedy. It captures the momentous nature of the first moon landing, painting it with the colours of self-deprecating Australian humour, and grounding it with the warm and quirky characters of a country town.
Much of the surrounding story is quite accurate. One part that isn't is the security guy who is given a gun for the duration. In real life there were four Commonwealth Police (now Australian Federal Police) officers stationed there for the moon landing. One of them is an old friend of mine, one of life's great characters and later to play a significant role in the NSW Rural Fire Service in managing major bush fires for decades.
The problem with the dangerous wind during the operation of the dish is accurate. In high winds it should be set in a horizontal position where it is least affected. However, the moon was only just getting above the horizon during the moonwalk, so it had to be tilted to point that way, which is the position in which it is the most vulnerable to wind damage / destruction.

I was in Parkes during the landing (I was born there as was all of my family) and I would concur, it felt like Parkes in 1969. So much so that when I took my mum to an early screening of it we wept, it was home ❤
We moved to Sydney in 1974 but a little bit of Parkes will always be inside me.

The band playing Hawaii five-0 as the American national anthem was the funniest part of the movie 😂

FYI Parkes is nowhere near the middle of Australia. It might be said its somewhere close to a place that's near the middle of NSW.

Australian here, I worked for Kodak in Melbourne, the whole plant shut down for the hour the moon landing was taking place, with televisions brought into the dressing rooms.
Also the thing that was thankfully missing was the obligatory divorced couple having to work together that seems to be in every American movie of this type.

22:15 I’ve been there twice. 2011 for the 50th anniversary of The Dish itself and 2019 for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. On the Saturday night they played the movie on an inflatable screen. It was the best night ever even though it was -2c. I will never get over how big The Dish is. The videos don’t do it justice

Australian accents sound like this generally, the accents aren't downplayed. People that sound like Steve Irwin are in the minority. Sam Neill is a NZ actor, he has done a lot of work in Aus TV & films prior to working in the US.

They hold an Elvis festival at Parkes in January every year.

I stumbled on that a couple of years ago when passing through. Stopped off at the Dish and was a little confused at first by all the Elvis posters and paraphernalia plaster all over the place, until I realized the festival was on in the town.

I only found your review now (obviously, I suppose), and you have highlighted some details that many may not have noticed.
Having grown up in Melbourne and watching the previous television sketch show productions of a handful of the creators involved in The Dish (that was a mouthful), I am most impressed with the the honing of this film. Working Dog Productions really perfected their craft for the mainstream, worldwide audience with little budget, as you mentioned. Not as small as the previous film, which I need not name. Another film that is perfect in my eyes.
Funny thing too, I just rescued a Blue Heeler 2 days ago. His name is Bruce, my last being Bluey, some 10 years ago.
Another mention, I only referenced Harvey a few days ago. My friend had no idea what I was talking about, and I encouraged him to view it based on the slightly intricate, social, community type conversation we were having.
    What are the chances?
    I just subscribed.

I was convinced recently that man has never been to the Moon. On the other hand I think he is just a lunatic. 🙂 I don't even think that America exists.
